So I'm coming up with a new realistic low-magic fantasy setting. There are our standard three races. Humans Humans are humans. What more is there to say? Elves Elves are humans with pointy ears that have the capability to learn how to use magic. There is no other difference. No long life, no unnatural beauty, no hugely extravagant cities or whatnot. Elves in fact live in somewhat more primitive societies. They are still elegant, but in a very simple way. Dwarves Dwarves are short humans that live underground that have a tendency to grow beards. They do not have Scottish accents and they do not believe that beer is more important than all else. There is also another race, simply called shapeshifters for now. Shapeshifters are beings that can change their form with a thought. They are inherently magical, and they are immortal. They are also sterile, however, and when one dies, it is impossible to replace it. They often live their lives pretending to be one of the mortal races, but some take on different forms. Magic is an anomaly that most people never get to see in their entire life. People who can use magic do not look any different, and it is incredibly hard to tell when they are going to use it, as there is no verbal, somatic or material component involved. Only the force of will is required. Magic is incredibly draining on a person's stamina. After a couple of advanced spells, a person will easily be gasping for breath. A couple more, and they might throw up. People can easily overwork themselves casting spells, and even fall into unconsciousness. As such, it is extremely impractical to only use magic, and most people that use magic actually do not use it as their primary means of fighting. In fact, due to the stress involved, it is only used in worst case scenarios. Only elves and shapeshifters may use magic. More later. |

There are half-elves, half-dwarves, and dwarf-elves, but I'm not sure what else. Nothing like drow or gnomes or whatever. I want there to be a nasty, vile race, like orcs but not blatantly ripping off Tolkien. Probably goblins. |

Goblins are also more or less directly ripping off Tolkien. |

"Existence is random. Has no pattern save what we imagine after staring at it for too long. No meaning save what we choose to impose. This rudderless world is not shaped by vague metaphysical forces. It is not God who kills the children. Not fate that butchers them or destiny that feeds them to the dogs. It's us. Only us." -Walter Kovacs | |

How about man-beasts covered in fur that stand a bit taller than humans. For faces they have parts like animals such as a wolf muzzles. Just a thought, don't kill me! |

Okay, I've done quite a bit of thinking on this setting. First of all, I've named the shapeshifters. They are called cayfelk now. Second of all, I have come up with a suitably evil race. They are called cargasts. They stand a bit taller than humans, are highly muscular, and have many places on their body where the bone sticks out, particularly on their head, which looks very much like a skull (for obvious reasons). Their bones are exceptionally hard and durable. Most of them make weapons out of the bones of their own kind and armor out of leather or hides. Leaders often have the luxury of possessing metal weapons or armor, most likely stolen from some hapless traveler they killed. Third of all, there is a bestiary in the making. It currently consists of basilisks, dragons and spiders. Basilisks are giant lizards. They have an exceptionally low metabolism, which makes them very lazy. Since they are so lazy, they can't be bothered to chase after prey. So they go out into the open, wait for food to stumble by, and use their petrifying stare to freeze them. Then they drag them back to their lair and eat them. Dragons are big, fire-breathing winged lizards that we all know and love. They are not as intelligent as humans, but they are more intelligent than animals. They are incapable of speech. The favorite pastime of dragons is terrorizing towns, making hoards of gold to sit on top of, and stealing away fair young maidens to their lair, which they keep around until they become bored with them, at which point they eat them. Spiders are larger versions of their namesake, often found in dark places and deserted buildings. The sign of a spider living somewhere is generally a large amount of cobwebs that litter the place. For all creatures in the bestiary, only the most foolish would try to attack one alone. It's only slightly less foolish to go in a group. An army is probably the best choice, especially for creatures like dragons and basilisks. Fourth of all, there's a map in the making. I have divided the world into three distinct parts. The north, the south, and the west. The south and west are temperate. Most "civilized" people live in the south and west. The north is filled with nomadic tribes of elves and humans, along with tribes of cargasts who attack whomever has the misfortune to stray near them. |
