The men waited anxiously for the pilot to exit the craft, their weapons trained on the ship, and then on the hatch opening before them; and then on the unknown soldier. One of the men, who appeared to be the leader of the group, raised a hand, telling them not to shoot. They listened to the reply of the intruder.

As this happened, Reg and Bel had reverted to their human form, feeling a loss of dignity in their nudity while capture in a metal net. They were powerless to do anything, having been sapped of their energy completely; he wasn't necessarily 'hungry' per say, but it felt like he had ran a marathon and had yet to recover his stamina.

After all these years, of all the experience he and Bel had went through while the Albanoid were disbanded; of what changes their body went through and how they learned to control it much better together; they were taken out with one simple trap. Sink, line and hooker, and they both fell for it. The two were both under the influence of their instincts, and the people wanting to capture him/them used it against them.

It was hard to believe they were so powerless all of a sudden. Bel cursed James for leaving them behind when he needed help the most; and they both felt like crying. Tears began to streak out of his eyes, images of what experiments they might put him through; and then all of his friends and family. All the people he met and then...her; he had only come to know her in such a short, recent time, and yet both had grown an affection for her because of the unusual circumstance they both had in common. As well as a few other things.

But when Twilights ship crashed, he felt a spark of hope rise in him, and turned to the direction of the voices. He barely heard Twilight's voice, but he definitely heard the unusual staticky sound (Something that made all of the solider jumps and turns eyes at one another, wondering what in the blazes was that about). Immediately, out of desperation, he used the last ounce of his strength to shout over and over until he had none left, "HELP! PLEASE HELP ME!"

The captain was about to let Twilight off until he heard their target shout out. He cursed himself for not administering sedatives to them, and ordered his men to immediately open fire. Better to have no witness he thought. Being freaked out by the sound, his men did not react to his command right away, but none the less they complied by letting fly their ammunition.

Twilight barely reacted when Squirt snarled and said something about screwing the damsel in distress, he really didnt understand humans... Though of course he was led more and more to believe she wasnt your average human female atleast, the sounds she made reminded him of the sound electricity and computers sometimes made, he had heard plenty of it when the Ing had attacked Sanctuary Fortress, as a warrior ing his hearing had been far superior to what it had been after aquiring the light crystal and being in humanoid form. Though now, without his helmet, it was nearly the same as before.

He was about to turn his attention back to the soldiers when she let out a series of loud noises which reminded him of the robots the luminoth had deployed to some degree, but of course the origin was different, and then followed it up with what seemed to be other languages. Though having spent a lot of his time in the outer parts of federation space he had learned the basics in several languages, and recognized a few 'words', and though he did not have the same mindset towards verbal insults as most other races he knew how horrible they was meant to be, she had to be pissed...

But just to make sure she didnt do anything rash he held out his left arm infront of her, as if to block her path, while also keeping his eyes on the soldiers. He had been waiting for the soldiers to make their move, either by attacking or trying to work out something by diplomacy. Of course then things would have to take a turn for the worse as a shout for help reached his ears, and it didnt seem to be too far away either... Most likely the soldiers now infront of him had something to do with it, and with the way the presumed leader now ordered them to open fire he understood they had to be 'bad guys' of some kind.

'What is going on here, I wonder...' He thought as he watched the soldiers aim their weapons at him. Normally he'd just let them shoot, those kinds of low power weapons could barely scratch him, but with someone behind him who he presumed to be atleast somewhat human, he couldent just hope they all had pin-point precition. As the soldiers began to pull their triggers and let loose the first round of bullets heading towards him, Twilight made a quick, but calm wave with his left hand, a millisecond later the bullets bounced off of a solid sheet of shimmering light that was infront of Twilight like a wall.

Though it might have looked like he put up the barrier in a mere moment, truth was he had been gathering the energy for it since the moment the girl had stepped up behind him, focusing it into a wall then was easy, it was drawing on the power which was the tricky part. The sudden appearance of the barrier probably surprised the soldiers, but it would not be long before they reacted again and so he sprang into action, launching off to the side as he left the barrier in place, having jumped several meters to the left he then began to rush towards the closest of the soldiers, but by now they had recovered from the small surprise.

Though for one unlucky one it had not been fast enough as he found his face punctured at several points by Twilights claw-tipped hand, then the soldiers opened fire at him again. Though there was no danger in them missing and hitting the girl now, but he wanted to keep up appearances of him needing protection from the bullets, so he used the nearly dead body of the soldier he had picked up as a shield, waiting for the moment they stoped firing for just a second as he threw the dead body at the closest pair with terrible force, sending them both flying on their backs with a sickening crack, most likely something in them had broken.

The soldiers stared in horror at the two now dead or unconcious soldiers, giving Twilight the time he needed to reposition himself once more as he thrust his right arm forward towards the closest (living) soldiers, sending a short stream of dark energy towards the man, and though it did not move at the speed of light it had been more than enough to catch him, and as it shot into his body it split up, sending small shrappnel-like energy bursts into several nearby soldiers, though unlike the main blast they were not nearly as deadly.

Twilight began to walk slowly towards the survivors not lying on the ground in pain, to those looking at him now it would almost seem like he was burning with black and white energy, creating a chaotic mix that seemed impossible. "Give it up, you cannot even hurt me." He said, his voice remained dark and intimidating, but there was also a bit of... Pity... In it.

The solider looked about the battle scene, surprised and even frightened. They had in no way been expecting an entity like this to show up; especially one of such unusual nature and strength. The captain cursed his fowl luck; just as with the last incident with this creature, it was like a curse followed the target and afflicted anyone who would try to attack him.

"Retreat for now," he spoke quietly over his headphone, feeling embarrassed and frustrated at their defeat, "we do not have the proper equipment and information to deal with this situation. It looks like Murphy's Law decided to drop a big one on us this time."

Damn, he swore, this was not supposed to happen at all. He wanted to get this done as clean as quick as possible; no mess at all. Now it seemed the element of surprise was ruined for the time being; he'd wonder how his superior officer was going to take to the recent. He and his group retreated back into the darkness and then their cloaked transport vessel; like wolves having been beaten back by several bears - they had unexpectedly bitten off more than they could chew.

Before disappearing, the captain gave Twilight a vengeful glare, silent speaking out this would not be the last of them.

Gone, the forest fell eerily silent. Reg and Bel hung their on the net, feeling completely exhausted; he could barely move at all. He looked to be completely out of it in fact, but the two felt a mix of relief and anxiety; for though the Albanoid had been chased off, he did not know if the stranger in that crashed ship would help them or not. More over, he was getting this killer stench that would probably kill his appetite for a week. It wrenched his gut inside and out, and even the bestial instinct that came from his body was awakened from this assault on his senses. Their minds were put into a semi-primitive state, where their reaction would seem far less than human.

There was so much revulsion that he barely had the will to keep himself from puking. It was probably from the fact that he needed to keep as much protein in his body as possible if he were to not enter one of his 'berserker' states.

The two things he didn't know was who it was that had fended off the Albanoid, and how many. Alls that he could tell was that there was this sudden stench, which could be quite strongly related to it/them. He lay slumped in the net, not caring how the metal gave him the most uncomfortable feeling; he merely hoped help would come.

I just _____ in the _____.

Squirt felt rather than saw the energy barrier. She watched as Twilight tore through several of the soldiers, bullets flew by, some bouncing off the shield. The GI screeched, her hands rigid so they resembled claws as she beat against the barrier. She had no idea if it would normally allow people to pass, but Squirt wasn’t exactly ordinary. The energy of it was as solid feeling to her as any physical wall.

In truth, Twilight had been doing the soldiers a favor by keeping her in.

Finally, she managed enough of a hold on the shield, raking one of her fingernails across it, she felt a small change, one that was enough that she was able to pass through. She gave a quick glance to see the retreating men before she turned to Twilight, her face was ugly, twisted with pure rage. One of her hands flew outward, not quite as claw-like as before but somehow far more menacing.

He’d imprisoned her, thrown her about in his ship, been careless and stupid.

She took a step toward him.

But he really hadn’t meant to.

Her outreaching hand began to shake.

By portraying herself as defenseless, hadn’t she prompted such a response anyway?

She squeezed her eyes shut.

Wasn’t she just looking for an excuse to be a murderer? No, worse than that. To kill was to end a life. Soulsparks were…different. More. Less. There. Not. Important. Fickle.

Squirt gave a sound not unlike a hiccup and she relaxed her stance. She’d overheard him say how the soldiers couldn’t hurt him. She probably could though, rather than give her a sense of bravery or superiority, it terrified her. She had no idea who or what Twilight was, yet there was no doubt she could bring him harm in the worst possible way.

The GI wrapped herself tighter in her sheet and avoided Twilight’s gaze, feeling ashamed around him for the first time, though it had nothing to do with her physical appearance.

She focused on how bad he smelled to her and spoke, “There’s no way those soldiers could have been waiting for us. Our flight pattern was too erratic and they had no idea where or when we were coming down. They were here for another reason and I think we messed it up. I did hear something just before the fight” she looked to where she’d heard the sound, her too-sensitive ability to hear nearly pinpointing it. She saw something not far, something bulky and awkward against the more natural shapes and color of the forest. “Th-this way” she said to Twilight, afraid of looking back at him.

She kept her gaze down, seeing the disturbed foliage on the ground, bugs scurrying for cover. The scent of blood hung in the air, that of human’s, from the soldiers, and another, that of a herbivorous creature. She found the most disturbed spot and slowly looked upward, brushing her green bangs out of her eyes in confusion.

There, hanging just above her, was…something.

A strange warmth started from the Beflexor between Squirt’s collarbones and spread out to the rest of her body.

It seemed they’d found the reason for the soldiers.

Monahan descended into the station's shooting range, where the officer had told her Nguyen was. As soon as she walked through the door, she heard the gunfire echoing in the room. There was her partner at the far end, wearing a visor and earplugs and firing his sidearm.

There was something strange about the gunfire, though. With every shot, the muzzle flash lit up the room like a strobe light. Each individual round was like a tracer, and she could see the brilliant white trails of light as the bullets flew through the air. And then, when they finally hit their target, there was a small explosion of sparks, as if Nguyen had been using an energy weapon. He must have loaded his pistol with some kind of specialty rounds, albeit a variety she had never seen before.

"Hey there," Nguyen said as she approached, taking off his visor and earplugs and laying down his sidearm.

"I just had a little chat with Director Quinn," she said, trying to convey her annoyance at the fact that he'd been down here shooting his gun while she was upstairs talking to the boss. She hoped her exasperated tone would be enough to get the message across without actually coming out and saying it.

"And?"

"Isusango's been declared a Class C. They've already sent a team to bring him in... he's officially no longer our problem."

Nguyen was surprised. He'd expected the Class C part. That meant that Reg had been deemed a threat by the powers that be, but was also the type of threat that was to be studied rather than outright eliminated. That he had expected. What caught him by surprise was the fact that he was being taken off their hands.

"So we're off the case?" he asked.

Monahan shook her head. "Not by a long shot," she replied. "Quinn wants us to focus on Adler. Who he's working for, and what they did to Isusango. Troopers will take care of the 'what.' Our job is to figure out the 'who' 'how' and 'why.'"

Nguyen nodded. "So I guess our first order of business is to track down the good doctor."

"That's the gist of it," his partner replied. She pointed to his pistol, changing the subject. "Whatcha got there?"

"Hm? Oh, the bullets. They're called White Lightning. It's sort of a cheap method of energy lacing, only using a chemical in the powder instead of a mechanism. When the powder ignites, the chemical reacts and basically charges the bullet. Pretty powerful stuff."

"You mind?" Monahan asked, picking up the gun.

"Go for it."

Monahan fired a few rounds at the target. Even with the protective visor, the muzzle flash was still incredibly bright. The brightest of any conventional weapon she'd ever seen, as a matter of fact.

"Nice."

"They're still in that experimental phase," Nguyen said. "They've been issuing them to the Mobile Elites so they can test them out in the field. Sidearms only, though. It's only cheap compared to an M82 SMG. Still, they said we could have a few clips if we want, just for a little extra punch."

"I think I'll take them up on that."

...............................

"Um... did... something happen? What's going on?"

Captain Mason didn't immediately respond. Instead, he turned to his team, barking orders. "I want a patrol on that forest," he said to one of the troopers. "As many men and gunships as they can spare. I don't care if they have to burn it all down, find him."

The trooper nodded and scampered off. Mason turned back to Kat.

"What's going on, young lady, is that you've been harboring a dangerous entity. Don't even try and deny it... we know of the creature that inhabits your brother's body. We know what it is capable of. And we also know that the two of you have been, shall we say, less than forthcoming on the subject.

"Now, here's the situation. We're going to find him and bring him in, and you're going to help us. And that includes providing us with answers. If you don't cooperate, I'll lock you up. If you lie to me, or if I think you're lying to me, I'll lock you up. And, if we should find out that this creature has been up to no good while he's been living under your roof... I'll lock you up. Understood?"

Roffel House!

Broken trees, crushed dirt, and scorch marks from weapons and engines shattered the once serene hunting spot into nearly unrecognizable terrain. If not for the familiarity of the topography, James would’ve thought he’d just been teleported to another planet. The firefight had long since left his area, and the woods were eerily quiet.

James didn’t have Reg’s ability to detect electromagnetic waves or keen sense of smell, but James had a sixth sense of his own. Years of hiking in remote terrain, often under enemy fire, had given him the ability to make a mental map of the areas he had passed. Although the land he was traveling through was unrecognizable, James knew he was headed in the right direction.

The situation had changed. Whatever it was he wasn’t sure, but something had happened to draw fire away from him. Either whoever was after Reg got what they wanted and left, or there were multiple groups at war here. Judging from the sheer chaos he had experienced in the woods after he had found good cover, he guessed that the latter was probably more likely, especially when he knew he was following the trail of a crashed ship.

His hunting rifle locked and loaded, James kept low and hung close to fallen tree trunks as he made his way back to his friend in distress.

"HELP! PLEASE HELP ME!"

The desperate scream sent chills down James’s neck. He quickened his pace, fueled by adrenaline and the need to help a comrade.

Gunfire erupted from about 400 yards in front of him. He immediately diverted straight up the hill towards the mountain. The shots told James that Reg was still there, but also that he had to act quick. Hopefully he could use whatever distraction had appeared to get his friend out of trouble.

Ten minutes later, James approached the scene from upslope. His camouflage hunting clothes were good enough to fool even keen eyed turkeys, and the soldiers down below didn’t see him as he slowly stalked on his stomach through the fallen oak leaves. The detritus crunched with every elbow and knee forward, but the gunfire below drowned out all other noise.

He could see the downed ship, but he couldn’t see who Reg’s captors were shooting at. That didn’t matter though, because he was now close enough to see Reg, and what he saw wasn’t good.

Sensing an opportunity, James didn’t even think about what he did next. He shouldered his rifle and exchanged it for the fixed blade hunting knife on his belt. Darting forward, he hid behind an upturned tree for as long as he could. He paused only long enough to make sure nobody was looking at him directly, then ran to Reg’s side.

The net was made of some sort of metal and his knife just wasn’t good enough. He hacked and scraped at the material, knowing he was running out of time. Reg didn’t move the whole time, and that almost scared him more than if Belugugan freaked out and tried to eat him.

Finally, he managed to cut through three consecutive squares in the mesh, leaving a hole just large enough for Reg’s head and shoulders to go through. James quickly slid the knife back into its sheath, then grabbed Reg and pulled him free of the net.

“Reg, get up and run!” James whispered fiercely into his ear as he slapped Reg lightly across the face and pointed up the mountain with his free hand.

-------------------------------------------------

Katanura didn’t scare easily, but the man on her doorstep and what he represented frightened her. She sputtered briefly before she realized she wasn’t making herself look very good. She took a deep breath.

“We’ve got no reason not to cooperate with you,” Kat said. “Reg is out hunting and will probably be back soon. If we were less than forthcoming with the previous agents then we’re sorry, but I don’t exactly share my bra size with people either. We’re trying to put our lives back together, that’s all. There’s no reason for all of… of this,” she said as she waved her hand at the mess behind him.

Kat shook her head and pursed her lips in genuine, worried dismay. “Look, I can tell you right now that unless you do something a bit more discrete than what you’ve done so far that even if Reg is in the area that he won’t come close. He’s been poked, prodded, and abused far more than you can ever imagine. He almost lost everything. You have to treat him like you would a traumatized veteran. You’re all welcome to come in and have coffee, cookies, or whatever I’ve got in the kitchen, but please heed my advice when I say that you are putting yourself in danger by setting a barricade up around my house!”

"We're the Mobile Elites, love," Mason said. "We don't do discrete. If that's what you want, hire yourself a bounty hunter."

Meanwhile, one of the troopers was silently musing over Kat's other comment about not revealing certain personal information. He looked her up and down from behind his blue visor. 33-22-33, he thought to himself with a sly grin.

"I might add," Mason continued, "that when I was your age, I was held prisoner by Pirates for almost a year. I can imagine quite a bit of poking, prodding and abuse. Probably a lot worse than you can.

"As for the perimeter, I can assure you my men know exactly what they're doing. We've seen sights infinitely more ghastly than that thing wearing your brother's skin. Don't worry about us. Now then, how about some of that coffee?"

......................

It didn't take long for one of the police gunships to approach the scene. Scans of the area pinpointed their target, plus an unidentified human. In close proximity there was a creature of unknown morphology, a number of human corpses, plus one... anomaly. The crew, having their priorities, ignored the others and focused on their target.

The ship descended into the area just a few yards away from where Reg and James stood. "This is the police," came the voice from the external speaker. "Drop your weapons, get down on the ground, and put your hands where we can see them."

Roffel House!

Katanura led Captain Mason into her house, along with six armed guards who swept her house. A moment later one of them called out "clear". Two returned to the front door while the others stationed themselves by windows around the house.

The coffee pot was almost empty. James always did like a full thermos before he went out hunting. Kat drained the last of the coffee into a mug, then pulled cream out of the fridge and the sugar bowl off the microwave. She carried everything over to the kitchen table, then grabbed a filter, a can of grounds, and started a second pot.

"I'm sorry you got caught by space pirates. You're right, I can't imagine what you've been through. But my brother," she placed very strict emphasis on the word, "almost lost his own sense of self. He fought a long and hard mental battle with the organism that infected him. His body may not be human anymore, but I assure you that he still is."

Katanura sighed and stared at the empty coffee mug in her hands. "We came here to give him some space. Reg knows he can be dangerous. So do I. We moved to the country for that reason, and these hunting trips give his bloodthirsty side a chance to stretch before he goes back into civilization."

She was silent for a moment. "He's worked so hard and done so well. He's winning, but now you guys are here. What exactly do you intend to do with him? He hasn't done anything wrong, and if he comes back defending the house against intruders you better not hold charges of assault against him."

"Charge him? I could no more charge him with anything than I could charge a tiger for eating some colonist. A man who's infected by a parasitic organism can't really be held responsible for his actions, now can he??

"I can't say I really know what's going to happen to him. I was only told to apprehend him. My orders come from Section 6, and the spooks never tell you why you're doing what you're doing. You just do it, and you don't ask questions. My guess is they'll put him in quarantine and have a bunch of scientists studying him. That's the way it usually goes."

....................

Intelligence work and detective work have a lot in common. Both essentially revolve around investigation. Both have a tendency to sometimes stretch the limits of legality. And both required lots of patience. The patience to take your time on a case - months, years even. But more commonly, there was the patience required to do lots and lots of sitting around and waiting.

The two agents sat in their car parked just down the road from Adler's house. They'd been staking out the doctor's place all day long. they knew he'd left to the office that morning, but weren't sure when to expect him back home. Their solution was to simply wait for him. and they were prepared to wait for however long it took. It had already been six hours.

After a swift display of power it became clear for the soldiers they were not equipped to fight Twilight, and their leader wisely chose to pull back. It was regrettable he had to use lethal force, but without showing them how outclassed they were it was likely they would continue fighting, besides they did not seem to be 'good' guys, so killing them was not in direct conflict with his 'moral code'.

Another reason for him to finish the fight quickly was because his light barrier would not last long, it began to disappear about when the soldiers began to retreat. Though he kept an eye on them until they disappeared out of sight he turned toward Squirt and was about to say something when he noticed her expression towards him.

Though it was barely noticable, he could feel a murderous intent flow from the woman as she threw a hand forward in a nearly claw-like fashion. Though she did not scare him, he had to wonder what was up with her. Sure his flight had not ended quite like planned, but her anger seemed more like directed at the person who had shot them down before. He really did not understand what was going on in her head.

He was about to say something again when he noticed how she shut her eyes and turned away from him, as she wrapped the sheet tighter around herself. At this sudden change Twilight had no choice but to scratch his head in confusion, it became obvious she wasnt your average human female, but he did not understand just what she were either. He had barely felt the anger that she let out earlier, but even so it had been intense, like if only those with extremely potent senses, such as warrior ing, could sense it...

Then she started to talk about the situation, how the soldiers couldent have been waiting for them and how she had heard something before the fight started. "...Yes, I heard it too." Twilight said in response, though he had not forgotten her previous behavior, he decided to put it to the side for now however and concentrate on the task ahead. As they walked in the direction of the shout, they came upon a slightly interesting scene.

Though they were still atleast thirty meters away, Twilight could see through his helmets visor that there was two humans, or atleast two who looked human, in the area ahead. One laid motionless on the ground, while the other stood a bit to his side with a knife in hand, though the net hanging above the first man pointed to him having just been rescued from it, or atleast cut loose for whatever reason. However they did not have time to go any closer before a small craft descended into the area, comming down inbetween the two groups.

"This is the police," came a voice from the external speaker. "Drop your weapons, get down on the ground, and put your hands where we can see them."

This day was just getting stranger by the second...
