0500

At this time, it was discovered that a foreign contaminant had entered the space port. All flights were cancelled. Privately owned vessels were landlocked.

0600

At this time, the foreign contaminant was determined to be biological in nature, of unknown size, species and disposition.

0630

At this time, evacuation of civilians commenced.

1000

At this time, the space port was quarantined. The foreign contaminant has been isolated. Further direction is necessary. All civilians have been evacuated from the space port.

--

This story is about those that didn’t escape in time.

--

“Hello? Anyone?” Nicole Hayes ran through the lifeless terminal, a bag over her shoulder, but she couldn’t find anyone. Baggage claims were left motionless, some with people’s personal effects still on them. Some of the lights were still on, but many had been powered off; probably to save power. Nicole pursed her lips and slowed to a walk, looking around. The evacuation had started three and a half hours ago, but she got separated from her group, and now she couldn’t find anyone. Typical.

As she stepped around the debris of someone’s abandoned camping gear, it occurred to her that perhaps the evacuation had already ended. It was an intimidating thought, but it would explain the apparent lack of life that the space port possessed. She banished the thought to the back of her mind; there were probably other people still in the port. Surely they wouldn’t quarantine the space port if there were still civilians left inside.

Climbing up a forlorn escalator, she made it to the top of the terminal, and made a run for the double doors, the only things left between her and the outside world. They wouldn’t budge, electronic locks in place to keep them closed. “Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me!” Nicole snarled. She looked around for something, anything that could help her break out--she found a metal briefcase, and slammed it against the glass of the door. It didn’t even so much as leave a scratch.

“God dammit!” She threw the briefcase to the ground. She was stuck inside the space port, and there was nothing she could do about it, except maybe pray. Looking out into the darkness of the deeper recesses of the terminal, the only thing that Nicole could concentrate on was the prospect that somewhere out there, there was a snarling, drooling beast, presumably ready to feast on her flesh. But, somewhere out there was her checked luggage that was supposed to be given back to her before she reached her fighter, and wherever that was, she would be able to find her weapons.

As she went off to begin her search she muttered under her breath, “What the fuck does foreign contaminant even mean here?” She needed a flashlight.

Unlike someone who might have been caught at the wrong place at the wrong time, sealed within this metal hellhole, a figure moved through the place with an actual purpose. He did not particularly like this assignment, but at the same time, it was one of those necessary missions, and he had been the one to draw the short straw on this one, since he was the closest operative to the space port. The space port itself had been scheduled to lock down an hour before it actually did, but it was postponed just to insert himself into the environment. His briefing had just been that: Brief. He had received word about some sort of biological substance or creature that had found its way onto the space station, and he was the guy left holding the rope should the Federation need someone to blame, apparently. However, his current operation was to investigate the foreign...thing, and if possible, neutralize the threat.

There was a jingle in his ear and, after taking a moment to find a dark corner within the space port terminal, pressed a button to the side of his neck. "This is DOLUS," He said barely above a whisper. The microphone implanted just beside his adam's apple allowed him to speak to his superiors without needing to speak up, though it had this irritating scratch against his throat whenever he swallowed. There was a speaker implanted within his ear, preventing enemies from overhearing the transmission easily, though the effective range of the entire set up would normally be very limited. Instead, a flexible metal rod that ran the length of his spine allowed him to broadcast and receive transmissions from extended ranges, allowing him to communicate at ranges beyond ten feet.

"DOLUS, COORDINATOR here. What is your status?"

"I have just entered the terminal from the maintenance air lock. I managed to secure my void suit and equipment at the air lock after pressurization."

"Understood. Remember, your suit is made of digital fibrous membranes. It's still experimental, but it should allow your suit to take on the general color of your surroundings and allow you to sneak through the facility unnoticed. The Federation currently has no comment on the situation and organism within the space station, so it is important that no one else finds the creature."

"Got it. Guess I'm the test rat for this little operation?"

"You were the only one close enough to respond to the situation with any sort of speed and proficiency, you know that. Besides, you came very highly regarded from the Federation Scout Recon Division."

"There are days I miss the SRD. Anyway, what's my next step?"

"You will need to access the main security bridge on the space port. There, you will have to log into the security terminal and take a look at the security footage. From there, you should be able to pinpoint the location of the creature in question. Update me when you get there or if something unforeseen occurs."

"Roger. I'll call if I'm feeling lonely," DOLUS responded before cutting the immediate link. He rose to his feet, still stopping a little bit to present a lower profile to anyone--or anything--stalking around the terminal. He would have to find the security bridge somewhere...

This posting so far had been rather pleasant, the space port's systems were wonderfully stable, and the Systems Specialist who had been posted before her had done a wonderful job of keeping things maintained and documented. All in all it was one of her better jobs, the only reason they needed her there so far as she could tell was the older computer core that maintained the spaceport's systems. It was this that had lead to the start of her day.

0415** Support Specialist report to primary computer core, operation failure**

a very groggy Madi moved from bed pulling her hair back into a pony tail to keep it out of her face before pulling glasses on. About ten minutes later a rather groggy Tech stood outside the computer core entrance pulling on gloves knowing how cold it would be in the computer core listening as the system prepared to open the door

***Alert: Sensitive equipment, please leave all Electronic devices outside the vault, no communicators, or transmitters allowed within the computer core***

Madi sighed and set her com on the table near the door next to the half finished coffee she knew would be cold by the time she came out before pulling her hair under a blue cap with her division's logo on it. Stepping through the air lock like doors before entering the core its self

seven hours later an annoyed technician emerged from the core still talking to the structure “ I'm not saying that you aren't entitled to a break but maybe some time when I am already awake?” she moved and picked up her com “display messages”.

The first few were automated system messages and then the floor fell out from under her. While she had been in the shielded core with no com for hours, and while she had been there chaos had erupted in the world around her, the station was quarantined, and there was some unknown terror wandering the halls.

She depressed the button “control this is Specialist Thomson...” nothing “ Control? This is Systems Specialist Thompson wrapping up in the computer core”...still nothing “ anybody?”

she sighed a moment and paced in the tiny hall leading up to the core descending into a moment of panic, she was all alone, no security, no soldiers, no one there. No one knew where she was, no one was coming for her, why didn't they check, why didn't they come find her? She stopped foreign herself to take several deep breaths. Security was close, from there she could patch into the com system and get a message out, they would come back for her....they had too right?

She picked up her gear and started along the hallway pausing a moment looking to the security locker on the wall. She didn't like guns, not that she was opposed to their use, they just made her nervous. She pressed her access code into the keypad and opened the door pulling out the handgun and extra clips before moving through the darkened hallways towards security.

Stumbling through the dark corridor and various overtune debris, from chairs to trash cans, in the space port was a about red head in civilian clothing. She had a usual pair of navy blue jeans and sported a cyan blue shirt with a sickly green biohazard sign on her chest, purely for style; and by the looks of it, a college or university woman. Her clean, smooth red hair descended just beyond her neck area, and she held a certain attractivness to her, but not in the way most would expect. She was far from a super curvasious supermodel, though her lithe body appeared athletic to a degree. No, it wasn't her physical stature, but rather her gray, intelligent eyes and expressivness on her sorft features that complemented her alure without hiding one another.

Jenna Isusango, however, was wasn't quite the woman who had gotten seperated or lost from the group. On the contary, following her almost unnatural curiosity of anything biological, especially that of micro-biology, she had actually went against the tide of the crowd as soon as her mind processed the word "forgein contaniment." 'Foreign' being new to her, and contaminant being like that of bacteria or fungus; which was also possibly meant a new micro organism. One which HADN't been catalogued; one which she could be involved in studying with. Ok, so she had reminded herself she was still in college taking a co-op program on biochemisty - something a part of her father dissaproved of - but at the very least there would be a chance for her to help along with the quarantine team.

Now she was beginning to wonder what had gotten into her. Of course they probably wouldn't have let her considering it was the fedeeration and she was civilian. But hope, curiosity, and her body had won out that time, and she was beginning to grow anxious and worried when she didn't see personel in hazard suits walking the place. Then, if that DID happen, she'd probably be placed in a quarantine room since she was IN the quarantine zone. Now she felt stupid, and worried; and she was supposed to getting off of here now that her vacation was over.

She whined in the darkened hallway, feeling lonely and anxiously, looking about more and more desperately, as time went by, for any else. She gulped at the prospect of being locked in the space port all by herself.

At the same time, she occaisonally sniffed; not out of sadness but as if she was actually smelling an auroma of sorts in the hallway. And then, she sniffed some more, and, her eyes widening, she began to run down the hallway at surprisingly good speed.

Sure enough, at the end was a luggage compartment area, and in it was a swearing, brown haired woman, obviously trapped like she was. "Oh, thank god; for a second I though I'd be the only one stuck in this place." she announced.

Nicole glanced over toward the source of the voice. Any other person in this place was someone that could potentially help her. She waved at the new woman. “Hey! I don’t suppose you have any idea of how we could get out? The doors are locked up tight, and the glass is too reinforced to break.” A grin grew on Nicole’s face as she stepped over to her new friend. “You have no idea how glad I am to see another living person here. Maybe everyone didn’t get eaten after all.”

She glanced over toward the pathways deeper into the terminal. “I was thinking just now that maybe if we called security somehow, we might be able to find someone that’s still here. Not sure if it’ll work, but it’s worth a shot.” Someone at security would be able to help Nicole find her bags, and that would bring her one step closer to actually feeling safe in the darkness of the space port. She shook imposing thoughts out of her head and looked back to the woman, trying for a smile. “Come on, let’s go see if we can find an emergency phone or something.” She headed off toward the innards of the terminal.

“By the way, I’m Nicole.”

Jenna smiled as she as the woman greeted her enthusiastically.

“Hey! I don’t suppose you have any idea of how we could get out? The doors are locked up tight, and the glass is too reinforced to break.”

Jenna sided her head to one side, "Sorry to say, but I'm just as clueless as you. I really don't have any technical skills; I'm better at biology than I am with technology, honestly. But hey," she added, "I myself am happy I'm not the only one left here.

“You have no idea how glad I am to see another living person here. Maybe everyone didn’t get eaten after all.”

"Eaten?" Jenna inquired, eyes blinking more out of confusion than fear, "I never suspected people were being 'eaten' by whatever this foreign contaminant is. Heck, for all we know, it might a super fungus that's incredibly poisonous. No telling what the danger is." Although now that she thought about it, there probably was - and still is - something real nasty that the guards and general port quarantine system couldn't handle. Simple bacterial or viral infection wouldn't make sense since everyone would be quarantined, not evacuated - yet foreign contaminant, unless she thought of it wrong, meant something microbiological.

The thought both brought fear and excitement.

"Security itself is probably gone, but hey," she said with a shrug, "it's better then nothing."

“By the way, I’m Nicole.”

"Jenna. Jenna Isusango," the red head replied.

As they walked through the deserted area, Nicole could hear Jenna occaisonally sniff the air.

***Quarantine: Due to an unknown biological contamination this station has been quarantined, no traffic may pass in and out***

"I know that already, will you please activate the transmitter so I can call for a shuttle or a plane, or anything to get me out of here before what ever is here gets me!"

***system lockdown, please enter administrative access code to over ride***

Madi growled in frustration banging her forehead on the console as this was the sixth time she had tried this "Thomson six six three five nine blue"

and again the system processed the information ***systems specialist Madeline Thomson confirmed: Blue level access confirmed....Alert Quarantine procedure in effect, Station administrator approval required to start activate transmitter***

"computer, if you do not give me access to the coms I am going to get my tool kit...and when I'm finished making my call I'm going to re-purpose you into a coffee machine!"

she sat up and looked around the security office, it was fairly secure, the door was locked and required a security code to open, she had the cameras and could see the whole spaceport on the displays (at least she could after convincing the computer to turn them back on), maybe she could just wait out what ever was going on.

she stood up and moved over towards the soda machine in the security office and after digging some change from her pocket produced a soda and plopped down staring up at the displays for a moment "how can you guys do this all...." she paused a moment as movement caught her attention, two women walking through the abandoned terminal she moved and began typing into the computer before picking the Mic for the PA system

"h...hello?...can you hear me?...."

her voice would echo through the whole space port for all the good it would do her, but maybe these people were friendly. what if they weren't, she looked to the pistol still sitting on the table where she had set it after making it safely to the security office and picked it up waiting for a response.
