So friday I bought a bunch of M:TG cards, mostly from the newest set. Whenever I open a booster pack, I start at the back to see which foils or rares I get. I opened one of the boosters, and got a foil of Phenax, God of Deception, a mythic rare. I immediately put it in my foils folder and sent a text to my brother about it. Then I had to send another text, because the very next card I saw was the only planeswalker in the set, also a mythic rare.

Just so you can understand those odds, getting a foil is about 1:67, and nonfoil mythoc rares are few times more rare than a normal rare. In a set that has ten, getting a specific one is ten times less likely than just getting a mythic.

And the gaming store near where I work sells nonfoil mythics of in-print sets for around ~$20. I have a bunch of foils from sets that went out of print several years ago.

Ahh yes, MTG. I used to love playing that card series back when I was a teen; I was rather fond I tournaments were we simply constructed decks out of cards from a set of booster packs. And then there was my Mirrodin, artifact zerg deck. Good times.

Of course it was a money sink on my end, and I eventually ended up doing other stuff that it fell off my interest list.

Haven't touched MTG in quite a while, mostly because it's what CEMP said before: Money sink. I did go to some prerelease or something or other for...I think it was called Gatecrash? One of the sets of the new Ravnica block or whatever, but that was a while back.

I'm looking to get into competitive play, but I've never done it before. Apparently, draft format is a good one for those without a lot of money to burn. But over the next month, I'm gonna buy a bunch of individual cards for a blue deck. One of them is over $100 (Jace, the Mind Sculptor), but the rest should be less. When it's done, I'll let you know how it went in a legacy/modern match.

Also, read on wikipedia that there's an M:TG movie being scripted right now. The deal was signed with Fox, and Uwe Boll won't havea damn thing to do with it. So it might be okay.

I've got a few friends of mine helping me get back into playing again, myself. Two weeks ago we went through the majority of my collection to find the valuable cards in it. This includes a foil version of Elspeth, Sun's Champion.

I'm probably going to end up running a modern white/blue fish deck, judging by what I've got so far, but I want to talk to the guys some more first.

I'd hold onto that. It'll sell for a bit now, and after it rotates out of standard, it'll go down for a while. But hold on t it long enough, and keep it in good condition, and it'll sll pretty well.

Yeah, Draft formats are fun. I used to do those when I played somewhat regularly a while back.

For those not in the know, Draft format is when each player pays for a set of 3 booster packs (arranged by organizer depending on which set is currently the Standard). Everyone is then split into even groups of players around a single table, usually 8 I think. Then everyone opens the first booster pack, looks through it and picks one card from it before passing it to the person next to them. This repeats until all the cards in the pack are drafted out before opening the second booster pack and starting again. After all 3 boosters are drafted out, players are given a set amount of time to build a small deck to use in the actual competition (format of it is up to organizer).

They're usually loads of fun, especially when someone gets called out for blatant "rare drafting" (picking only rare quality cards).

I found out yesterday that we have a new guy coming onto the lot soon. I might be seeing him out there this weekend or the next. This is great because we need the help a lot now. Getting busy as hell.

Also, that same morning, we had a storewide meeting, and I got an award. Wasn't expecting that. It will look good on my record when I apply to another department. Geting into another department suposedly will get me a raise.

My brother and his fiancee are having boy. I've already got three neices, so I'm hoping he'll enjoy doing cool stuff like stuffing bottle rockets into anthills.
