The thing about AV software is that everyone has an opinion on them. I would pay for AV software, an annual subscription means the money goes into improving the software. the AV software is only part of it though, you need a good firewall as well.

people like to bash them but both Norton and McAfee offer good total packages, the last time I looked at Kaspersky it only offered AV and the people in the industry were not super pleased with its performance (granted this was a few years ago)

All I know is that Aiko's brother, who's a really good computer tech (Same guy who helped guide me in getting my computer components and construction), has recommended me Microsoft Security essentials, which is completely free. And although I don't have it, I know that No Script is a very good defense in preventing virus infection while surfing around, albeit it being a wee bit advanced to use.

I've had norton and mcafee, and they weren't very effective while they were active.

Also, just ordered the processor. An AMD A10 5700, I believe. 3.4 GHz, so I think it will do the job.

This friday, I may be able to get everything I need to make my computer functional, aside from an OS.

http://www.ubuntu.com/ if you are not going to be gaming I would suggest giving this a try (there is a steam client if you are going to be gaming, and really there are games).

1) its free
2) its secure
3) it comes bundled with everything you think of a computer needing
4) it can be installed from a DVD, or a thumb drive
5) upgrades are also free

Ubuntu has got to be one of the easiest Linux distributions to use, its what I use at home on the machine I want to "just work" because it does, and the community support is really very good.

I don't have home internet yet. Plus, how would I get online without any OS at all? All the hard drives I saw required nothing earlier than Windows XP Service Pack 3. I have a copy of XP with SP1. My mom might be able to find some something I could use at wod (they're upgrading all the time up there, and she has a drawer full of stuff).

Though I might just say screw it and get Windows 8, even though it's expensive as hell

any computer you can burn a DVD from or with create a bootable flash drive will help you out. you might be able make one on a machine at the library

I originally didn't want any windows later than xp, because I keep hearing each one is worse than the previous. Though I do hear it's possible to uninstall an OS and put in a new one. Problem is, would any of my games be compatible with Linux? None of them say.

Probably not with out more work than I would advise a beginner put into it, unless you have steam which has a client, and are adding games seemingly every day.

if they are older games there is a chance they wont work with windows 7 or 8 anyway (skip vista, and I would avoid 8 but thats me)

if the most advanced OS the games will run on is XP then you may be in for a frustrating time anyway.
