Rereading what I wrote, I don't think the phrasing "I can live with myself" is very appropriate. While it may be true in the abstract, it sounds so callous and really doesn't encapsulate how I really feel. But then again, check out the time stamp. What I should have said was that I accept what was done, for better or worse. What happened was bad, no question about it, and it happened because I was too drunk, stupid and arrogant to wrap it up. But I'm also being a bit disingenuous here, trying to cover up the fact that our reasons (her reasons, really) are far less defensible than others. It's not pretty, but it's the truth. I was born and raised Catholic. I left the church a long time ago, on account of the fact that I thought it was a bunch of hooey. But the thing about Catholics is that no matter what you believe, you're always Catholic. It's a deeply ingrained part of you. Despite that, or perhaps because of it, my moral compass is admittedly a bit skewed. It's weird. Catholicism is simultaneously highly dogmatic and incredibly permissive. Santorum, Scalia and their ilk, they're the weird ones. Joe Biden is a hell of a lot closer to most Catholics I know (C'mon, Father, wrap it up! The game's on at noon!). But with all that in mind, I probably don't feel as bad as I should. Or rather, I feel bad for different reasons than you might think. For me, it's about what she went through. The physical procedure, the emotional toll, her mother finding out from the credit card bill... that's all on me. Then again, whatever I feel can't possibly equal how she feels. Not even close. |

full disclosure, I am pro-choice. I've never had to make that choice but some people very close to me have, and I've know people who have made all the choices that can be made. First of all Jefe has hit on something I think a lot of people on both sides of the debate seem to miss. for the people who make the choice either on their own or as a couple, it is a choice that they have to live with for the rest of their lives. it isn't easy regardless of the choice you make which but it is a deeply personal choice for the women involved which to me is part of what makes the people standing outside the clinics screaming extra repugnant. other than that I agree with everything he said, to me the solution seems easy, rather than trying to stop people from having sex it makes sense to provide good education to kids and adults as to how to be responsible, and make access to contraception easy and shame free in and of its self. on top of reducing the number of abortions by reducing the number of pregnancies contraceptives have other benefits (condoms help prevent the spread of STDs, and birth control has a host of other health benefits for women that I wont go into here). on the outside this appears to be a case of one group wanting to impose their morality on another group, but it is worse than that in my mind, it is about taking away a woman's control over her own body, it is about the removal of agency, and it is about returning women to being property, because that is how they are described in a book these people believe we should all live by. end rant but guys seriously well done, DA while I may not agree with some of your point of view the fact that it is expressed from a position of compassion more than anger gets you points. you may not realize it but that is a pro-choice argument. I am unsure of my own feelings on the process its self, even without a religious background of my own. but I cannot say how I would handle things if I found myself in a position to be contemplating that choice, although now at thirty I feel like it is safe to say any children I have will be planned. and Jefe I think D&D only works that way for boys |

Anger is easy; compassion is hard, but totally worth the effort. We all have a cross to bear.

Just a small one on a different topic entirely, but does anyone ever consider that the reason why everyone working the closing shift at any store tends to be unfriendly with you when you go shopping in their store at the last minute is probably because you have come in and started pestering them while they're cleaning up the mess created by othrr customers and have probably put up with a bunch of people who had to be deliberately difficult or rude as hell? It's especially infuriating when a customer acts as if it is beneath them to simply walk a couple dozen yards. As a simple rule of etiquette, don't bitch about walking that far to one of the people who do the most walking of all the employees in that. |

I've been there... not fun when you're the closing cashier. On the other extreme, concerning bad service.... There is a reason Comcast is rapidly becoming known as Comcrap: http://abcnews.go.com/Business/comcast-apologizes-unacceptable-customer-service-call-end/story?id=24567047 Listen to the call. This is just 10 minutes in of this poor guy trying to get the rep to disconnect his service, and in total he had to ask the rep over twenty times. Comcast, here's a hint: you're creating your own competition by pulling this crap; if you want to be around in another ten years you'll quit while you're ahead. |

the thing is that these big companies are basically monopolies the can do what ever they want. as to the rep I have a feeling I know what happened in this case. when you call to cancel your service you end up in some kind of "customer retention" department. it doesn't matter what the company is, or what it does but if they provide a service that is similar to other companies for money they all have this department, its sort of a last ditch effort to not have money walk out the door. after listening to the call (which made me want to scream and I wasn't even on the call) I think I know what is happening here. 1) call centers are all run on metrics, I have a feeling that either a) he was worried he had too many lost customers or b) he has good numbers and didn't want to mess them up 2) either way the rep to me was clearly trying to get the guy ( a lost customer already) frustrated enough to hang up and call back in to talk to someone else, this would work in his favor. its stupid but it is symptomatic of how call centers work That said three and a half years in a call center, the numbers the company cared about sucked but my customer's loved me. and now I'm free....I'll work in hospitality again before I return to that hell. |

I would argue then that it's about time the light was shone down; what an atrocious business practice. I hope Comcast gets roasted over the coals; I'm not some toy to be played with! |

"I believe that the human spirit is indomitable. If you endeavor to achieve, it will happen given enough resolve. It may not be immediate, and often your greater dreams is something you will not achieve within your own lifetime. The effort you put forth to anything transcends yourself, for there is no futility even in death." — Monty Oum | |
