Name: Tau-48
Species: “Rogue” Federation Harbinger II Class droid
Race: N/A
Birthplace: Kaleth-4 Manufacturing and Research Facility
Age: 2
Gender: None as far as physical gender goes, but personality-wise, male.
Hair: None
Eye color: Bright green
Height: 7', 0”
Weight: 285 lb
Status (Job): “Rogue” (Unemployed)
Vehicles: A stolen, light Tesera class gunship.
Weaponry: Two modular photonic energy accelerators built into the sides of both arms, and a small secondary missile launcher.
Other: The Harbinger II droids are bulky and humanoid in stature, along with having reverse-jointed legs, and a small aeropack located on their backs to assist with high jumps. They are a silvery-grey in color, with their “name” engraved in green on the right shoulder. Their arms and upper body are generally tinted another color however - this is usually green.
Personality: Although typically muted in his emotions, Tau has an overwhelming curiosity about the world and things around him, along with a near insatiable lust for knowledge. He often feigns compassion when needed to further his goals; with closer relations it is less feigning than actual emotion. Tau is slow to anger and rarely does so, however, his anger is ruthless when riled, and he doesn't hesitate to resort to violence when enraged.
History:
Tau-48 was among the first of the Federation's experimental Harbinger II military droids, so named because of their fusion with organics, a development thought to surely bring about efficiency on a level not seen before. The first attempt at these droids, however, the Harbinger I class, failed completely and utterly. The organic integration rapidly lead to instabilities and the droids were soon found in a crippled and unstable mental state; the attempt was deemed a failure, and the design re hauled to take into account these failings. From this, the Harbinger II droids were created – and were seemingly perfect. Within a half year thorough testing was completed, and the first line was deployed among various missions.

Despite their fusion with organics, the Harbinger II's were still simple droids – unable to posses more than rudimentary emotion, and indeed, designed not to have more than a limited free thinking. It was only an ill-fated encounter that would change this for Tau. On what was deemed a low priority mission, Tau, along with a small group of troopers, were sent to investigate an unknown but suspicious signal emanating from a planet long thought dead and devoid of life, with only a smattering of ruins to suggest its nature in the past. Upon their arrival, it was found that the signal was originating from one of these ruins – their investigation into it made a startling discovery. For underneath the dead and lifeless ruins was a vast underground complex of a computer network – built presumably by the same constructors of the ruins. Despite the bulk of the network being in satisfactory condition, a sizable portion had fallen into decay and no longer operated.

Somehow, previous scans had failed to pick up the network, and it was deemed that there was a connection between it and the signal. Their initial search bore no clues towards a physical control panel, or indeed, any method of interacting with the signal or the network. Yet it was clear that the signal and the network were still running, and there had to be some way of operating it. After nearly a day of exhaustive search, it was finally decided that Tau, being the only one capable of directly interfacing with modern networks, would be their best bet of some interaction with the network. Of course, being completely alien in nature, the network interface would not be nearly as clean as a simple port – after a half day of analysis though, a way was found, and Tau tentatively attempted an interface.

What he found was much more than merely a computer network – it was an ancient AI construct, created by the interactions of the network, and yet trapped by the same thing that created it. Confined for eons amongst a crumbling network, it only had control over the few remaining outside structures still operating. Tau's connection, however, was new. Alien, and unfamiliar, yet somehow still able to connect with it and it's network that was was doomed to failure. In a split second it realized that this new connection offered an escape from certain doom – and quickly decided to move into the droid. The result, however, was not what it anticipated...

Instead of a perfect download-and-restructure, the incompatibilities between the construct and Tau lead to more of a merging, a merging catalyzed by the organic neural-structure of the Harbinger II class, that without, would have completely destroyed them both. The new construct lacked many of the memories of its former “life”, though retained the bulk of Tau's. This of course, happened in a mere instant, and the resultant interactions lead to an emergency shutdown of Tau, and a sudden shift in the computer network which soon grew unstable. Unaware of what had transpired, the troopers quickly decided that their mission was seemingly a dead end – for the signal had stopped transmitting.

Upon their arrival back to mission headquarters, Tau was brought back online – and soon deemed to be malfunctioning. For he no longer retained any of the mental confinements of a droid – and perhaps more significantly, experienced emotion. Under more investigation, he was deemed ir-repairable, and was slated for self termination. Outraged by this, Tau quickly escaped the small research facility, “borrowing” a ship in the process. A bounty was put out for his capture, but his locations eluded them, and he remains missing to date...
