PART 1: GENERAL RULES FOR THE ENTIRE FORUM 1. Act in a mature fashion. Treat others with respect! All members are required to write with common grammar skills. Noobish writing ("u r 73|-| u|33r | etc.) will NOT be tolerated! No flaming or trolling. Be polite. DO NOT make ANY offensive statements regarding race, religion, gender, sexual preferences, politics, etc etc on this board. Your post will be deleted and your warning level will be raised. If you're not sure whether your statement is offensive try replacing what you're saying with something you find offensive and think whether you'd like someone posting that. 2. NO SPAMMING!!! Post to contribute to discussions. Please have some type of volume to your posts and stay on topic. Spamming includes posting just to get your post count up, posting links simply to advertise for other sites, and other posting techniques utilized by n00bs and bots. 3. LINKING TO PORNOGRAPHIC, SLANDEROUS, HATEFUL, ILLEGAL, OR ANY TYPE OF QUESTIONABLE MATERIAL IN YOUR SIGNATURES OR ANYWHERE ELSE ON THIS BOARD WILL NOT BE TOLERATED!! 4. Swearing and Sexual References: In the General section, please keep swearing and mature references to a minimum. In the RPs however, our only rule is NO PORN. Acts may happen but we don't want to read graphic descriptions about them, so please use discretion. Concerning swearing, anything goes. Again use discretion: In the younger members' RPs, please don't traumatize the kiddies. However, older members wishing to start an RP with more mature content may do so, and the younger or more conservative members may choose whether or not they feel comfortable enough to join. New members who are concerned about this issue shouldn't be too worried, we're generally pretty mild around here. 5. Warnings: Every member has a warning meter under their name that is visible only by that member, mods, and admins. If you are caught violating the rules, a moderator or administrator will increase your warning level. Warning levels can be decreased over time with continued good behavior. 6. Signatures must be smaller than 500x125 pixels (width x height). Animated gifs must be smaller than 500kb! This prevents the forum’s margins from getting screwed up and maintains a minimum loading time for our members on dial-up internet connections. You will be warned and your signature deleted if you are caught with a sig image larger than the limits. Also, if you link your banner to an offsite page with inappropriate content you will instantly be warned. 7. Images must be hosted by LEGAL sources! If we discover you stealing bandwidth from another site, you will be warned and your membership may be terminated. Use free hosts, such as photobucket.com, to store all your pictures for online viewing. PART 1: GENERAL RULES FOR THE ROLE PLAYS 1. General section rules apply to role-players, but not to characters. If your character is an ass, your character is an ass. Just don’t be an ass yourself. 2. Recruit for new RPs before you officially create them! If you wish to start your own RP, submit your introductory post in the RP Recruiting Outpost. This allows you to see which role players are willing and/or able to participate in your story. It also gives us the chance to give you some feedback before you jump headfirst into freezing water. If you get enough RPers interested and your storyline is fascinating then you can officially open your RP. 3. Keep the Reference Sections clean. The Reality's Exile Reference section (Ships & Tech, Planets, Dictionary, etc.) is not a section where you can just post random things that you never intend to use. We don't want to discourage people from writing creative stuff that applies to their RE characters, but our reference section can be a nightmare to navigate if people post lots of things they never use. If you write stuff you're not going to use immediately, please save it on your computer for future use. |

PART 2: RULES AND ETIQUETTE FOR RP'ING (by GieGie) Basic Etiquette When Role Playing a character you need to have a basic respect for the people who are role playing other characters with yours. This respect includes basic creative control of a characters background, skills, and physical looks, respect not to drastically interfere with another characters storyline unless you have permission to (such as killing a character, that would drastically interfere ya know LoL) and NOT trying to be god (I will explain the god thing in a minute) If you're role playing with someone, you have to keep in mind the environment around you, hence, if my character is on a space station, and your character is on a planet below, it's impossible for your character to walk up to mine and start talking to her. You need to keep this in mind when creating a character too. If your character was brought up in a poor environment, and has hardly any money, it wouldn't be a fitting thing to have them gallavanting around the galaxy in a class one star cruiser with all the trimmings would it??? (Just an example) Where did they get the money? Unless they stole it, and yes, things can be added to storylines to make it work, but you understand my point right?? Also, it is not only just really childish to make a character with no weaknesses at all, but it is also very n00bish...That's in a way trying to be like a god, "My character is better than ALL of yours, and cannot be destroyed, fear my power!" Things like this will be ignored on this board as it shows no respect for other peoples characters or storylines and is also just annoying, plain and simple. Every character should have SOME type of weakness, otherwise what's the point? Seriously... Assume Your Role When Role Playing, you have to remember that just because YOU YOURSELF know something about a character does NOT mean you're character knows the same thing you do. Example, Kylie is Samus' half sister, you know this, and you role play your character as walking over to Kylie and asking how her sister is when your character has never met Kylie before. This is not good Role Play. If you come up to me in real life, would you automatically know what my name is? Who my siblings are? What I ate for lunch? Nope, and nor would your character know what my character has done or what her name is if they've never met each other before. This also applies to actions. You don't know what my character is going to do, therefore do not type out what she is doing. For example:: You RP that, "My character walks up to Kylie and hands her a weapon. After which, Kylie takes the weapon and puts it in her holster." That is WAY BAD form. The proper way to excute this is, "My character walks up to Kylie and hands her a weapon. After which my character waits to see what she does with it." The point is you're not role playing Kylie, therefore cannot make her actions for her. Depending on the severity of breaking this rule, you could be banned for it. When it comes to fights (which of course are going to run rampant in a Metroid Role Play) here's some typical rules you should observe... 1. Do not "Auto". This means don't just hit a person without giving them the chance to react to it, and dodge the blow. However since this isn't a chat, you might say that your character got off several hits, but in the response of the person you were hitting, they may post that they dodged several of the blows, and then make a come back that puts YOUR character in a bad position. 2. Do not throw out constant streams of attacks. Your character is going to get tired sometime, or run out of ammo at some point, and like the "playing god" thing, this just gets really annoying to other people role playing here...Plus it's just rediculous... 3. Do not kill a character without the Role Players consent!!! Hell, this goes for any action that may significantly alter someones storyline. Just talk to the person ooc before you make any big actions like this... Terms and Definitions Here's a few terms you may run into and what they mean if you don't know... RP: Role Play IRP: In Role Play (When reffering to something that happened in the role play) IRL : In Real Life (When reffering to something that happened in your real life) OOC: Out of Character (When the person role playing it talking, not their character) IC: In Character (When the person role playing is speaking as if they are their character, hence...role playing hehe) Auto: When a character automatically hits another character without giving him or her the change to dodge or react. Moding: When someone plays god and Role Plays the actions of not only his character, but of other peoples characters as well. BIG no no!!! Mun: The person who is role playing a character. Example:: Dax's mun is GieGie. Samus' mun is Rayne. Ridley's Mun is Otaku Metroid. RPing on this Forum Many people are used to the real time chat rps done on AOL, Yahoo, and many other programs with Chat abilities. Since this is a message board however, there ARE some differences. OOC is different here. Usually, we don't post OOC in rp posts at all unless it can't be avoided, such as a mistake has been made and has to be pointed out. In these cases, OOC will be posted in the following manner: (OOC: Look at me! I'm out of character!!! BAHAHA =P) Also, fight interactions are much slower. The best thing to do when fighting on a message board is either assumed hits or to get in touch with whom your fighting to set up a chat rp for the fight, and then post the results of that fight either by copying and pasting the conversation into an RP post, or by typing up a post to explain the events of the fight. The latter is a very good choice usually, but when it's not availible, assumed hits are best, which is done like this: I make a decent post saying that my character threw up her fist to hit Rayne's character in the head. While Rayne's character is confused from the blow, My character tries to jump on her character. Now, this is ALL ASSUMED. Rayne's response COULD be, " My character dodged the punch, but was caught off guard by the jump and was knocked to the floor." The thing is that you want to make your posts have some volume in these situations. You don't want to have 5 forum pages of one line posts saying "I hit you", "I punch you", "I dodge your punch and shoot at you." That's just silly and annoying. I hope this helps, and more will be added as it comes up. Thanks you for your time =) |
