![]() Hopefully there isn't already a thread for this... News of District 9 has been around for a while, but I've caught onto it late as I don't have a strong interest in sci-fi and only started reading up on it after hearing that the director was previously attached to the Halo film. The story is based on South African director Neill Blomkamp's short film "Alive in Joburg", which tells of an alien minority facing racial segregation while living in Johannesburg (mirroring the events of the Apartheid era). The full-length feature film expands on this by explaining that the alien refugees are the last survivors of their race and have lived in South Africa for 28 years prior to the start of the film, and are under the control of the Multi-National United (MNU) - a private company that stands to receive huge profits by adapting the alien's weapons for human use and are generally uninterested in the wellfare of the aliens themselves. As tensions between the aliens and humans reach breaking point, an MNU operative named Wikus van der Merwe contracts a virus that mutates his DNA and becomes the most hunted man in the world, as he is the key to unlocking the technology. Being South African, this is a particularly interesting story as I have an understanding of the mentality behind the segregation, and the setting of an oppressed minority within an oppressed majority bears a strong resemblance the recent xenophobic clashes between Zimbabwean refugees and black South Africans (obvious exceptions being a lack of advanced technology and not having come from a different planet, though their President is questionable). The film is being backed by Peter Jackson of Lord of the Rings fame, and international reception to advanced screenings has been very positive - Howard Stern gave the film "5 out of 4 stars", for instance. The film opens in the US on 14 August, and I've attached Blomkamp's original film below - have any of you heard about this, and are looking forward to watching it? It sounds very interesting. I haven't heard of it before now, but I'll put it in my queue (after Tim Burton's 9 that will be coming out soon). |

I've heard of it, and I'm quite interested in it. I'll definitely end up seeing it, but when is up to the certificate of the film. |

Looks interesting. Might actually be something I see on the big screen. |

So I went out and saw the movie, since some friends were going... FANTASTIC. It's a great movie, not just from the explosions or alien weapons, but the way it was shot even. Who else has seen it so far? |
