There’s an idea I’ve had for the last few days which I wish to ask members opinions about, it’s just a rough concept at the moment but if any of you see any flaws in it then I’d like to know so I can deal with them here and now. CONCEPT: The basis for the idea is simple as almost all sci-fi universes normally feature humans as one of three things: - A newly space faring race which while inferior tends to win all it’s battles through the use of a handful of heroes, - Someone who has an advantage over most other species due to our apparent drive for expansion or our sheer numbers, - Or very occasionally an advantage humans have due to some ‘inherited’ trait from a far older or long lost species. Instead I want to change the humans by changing the aliens, by focusing upon two eras in Earth’s history which in this storyline would prove to be unexpectedly advantageous. Most of the alien races in the universe share one very similar concept, that when they reached a major interspecies war or conflict which brought about mass death on all sides, in our case this would be the First World War. To prevent a second incident from taking place the alien civilizations very often put a lot of focus into precautions in order to prevent such a war from repeating itself, and while this did prove to have the advantage of essentially bringing about widespread peace within the species it often made their military tactics significantly lacking. This would have been the case for humanity as well were it not for three significant points: The Stock Market Crash, Nazi Germany and Communism. On many of the alien worlds a maniac like Adolf Hitler would have been ignored and his movement failed due to lack of backing, none of these worlds suffered a major financial crash at the same time however which lead to further Nazi support by Germans to keep themselves going and rebuild their nation, leading to the Second World War. With the Second World War’s end the actions of Stalin and the rise of the USSR ultimately lead to the Cold War further improving the tactics of warfare and intelligence operations against enemy nations. At this point any race who had reached such a standoff like the Cold War either ultimately wiped themselves out when one side broke the standoff or were conquered while they were still weak from the previous event by one of the space faring races, all but the humans who by their good fortune managed to miss such an event taking place. Now, compare the tactics we have today (or at the end of the Second World War for a more accurate comparison) to those used at the end of the First World War in terms of naval combat. The differences are to say the least, astounding. In this universe all of the races who have reached the technological level where they could move from planet to planet have a combat style very similar to that time focusing upon the use of huge battleships supported by corvette ships and using stealth frigates (comparative with submarines) as both scouts and hit and run warships. Fighters are used purely to either intercept the shots fired by other warships or to attack other fighters and escape pods. Whoever wins in battles tends to be whoever is the biggest and has the most guns. SETTING: The timeline is set thirty years after Mars has been fully terraformed by humans and nations hold a wide number of large colonies on various planets and moons as far out as Neptune due to the use of ‘sleeper ships’ (ships using cryogenic suspension.) Humanity has a number of shipyards in orbit of Earth which have constructed a fleet of carriers, destroyers which are small and work in groups and a handful of super carriers which act as mobile bases of operations and HQs. A gigantic but heavily damaged warship from one of the alien civilizations at war jumps into the Solar System in order to hide, and upon finding the less advanced humans chooses to conquer Earth in order to use it’s resources for rebuilding and to damage moral for the rest of the colonies upon finding that their homeworld has been destroyed. Bypassing the other planets the warship moves in to attack earth and is utterly confounded when the much smaller earth ships begin attacking with fighter bombers and begin to systematically destroy the alien warship’s systems one by one, unhindered due to the lack of anti-fighter defences. After roughly two hours of fighting the ship is taken by marines but at the cost of Earth’s flagship, and severe damage to the major cities in both Canada and the USA from the alien ship’s bombardments. Fueled out of a mixture of revenge and greed, the humans reverse engineer the warship’s jump drives finding them to be largely easy to replicate due to their simplicity of their designs, over the next few months humanity spreads like wildfire throughout the solar system taking many of the planets as far out as Eris and quickly colonizing them. Sending out various probes and scout ships with jump drives it is discovered that with the collapse of the previous galactic empire controlling the vast majority of the spiral arm which Earth is located in many smaller governments and powers have begun vying for control and to expand their influence, often either enslaving or destroying weaker or less advanced races in order to try and gain the upper hand. Seeing that this could prove to be of advantage to them, the humans begin making plans to join the war… GAMEPLAY AND ROLES: Gameplay and roles would focus upon characters that are part of the crews aboard the ships in humanity’s navy. Moral choices would ultimately effect the overall opinion of the races and would have either negative or positive effect upon their future actions. Any comments? |

So, if I'm right in assuming this, this is about a space naval war, with the humans having a significant advantage, and its up to whoever's playing a human to decide how good or evil they are as they kick alien ass? Sounds good. |

More or less, but the humans are heavily outnumbered and outgunned. They just have the advantage of having better tactics and being more or less unkown by everyone else. |
