Well, looks like I'm starting up with some more serious photoshopping for fun (is that an oxymoron?). Here's just a little taste of it (i.e.: all I have done right now):

The Scout

I used a stock photograph for the face, and Halo 3 screenshots for everything else.

I'm considering making this part of a bigger piece later on, so stay tuned for more updates!

Allow me to introduce myself, I am Doctor Buzz Killington.

So far, it's looking pretty good, but you need to be careful of how you handle shading when you photoshop something. People spend their whole lives used to colors and light acting a specific way, they'll notice when it's not.

Another secret to a good shop is starting with resources that are ridiculously large, and shrinking them down afterwards. Smaller image = less pixels = harder to see the little mistakes everyone is bound to make. Also, when it comes to magic wanding really thin objects like hair, it's better to go with a really high resolution resource photo, because it lets you pick and choose what stays and what goes a lot more easily. Also, that thin line of color bleed around the edges becomes next to invisible at half it's scale.

When you can't scale an image down to minimize color bleeding, go with straighter, tamer hair, rather than curly, wavy hair because there's nowhere near as much perimeter area for your background color to bleed through with. Every stray strand you decide to keep will bring a little background color through with it, and cutting those strands out makes the hair look uneven and shaggy, because the flow of the hair shows it going somewhere, and suddenly it disappears.

Anyway, yeah, I hope that helps you out a bit. What you've got so far is good, I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this thread. There's not a lot of us CGers in here.

Wish this forum had a reputation system so I could award EP for great advice :P

Adding onto it - the head seems a bit small compared to the rest of the body, so you may want to resize either it or the rest of the image to get it in proportion. The Blur tool (hotkey: R) is also great for smoothing out the jagged lines left by using the Magic Wand, so you may want to trace over the armor lightly using it to have the character blend into the scene better... It should also help with the hair when used in conjunction with the Smudge Tool.

Good job! Looking forward to seeing more.

Thank you both for the advice.

This is basically my second serious photoshop, so I am still an amateur at this. I did use a large stock image for the head and shrink it down, but I think I let a little too much background bleed through by taking too many extra strands. The blonde hair didn't help that, either.

Also, Outrack, I know it looks disproportionate, but I actually took great care to make sure the head fit within the helmet. Eyes centered on the visor, chin just above the bottom of the helmet. It could be the bulkiness of the MJOLNIR armor, or if it really is improperly proportioned, it's Bungie's fault for designing the helmet wrong.

Again, thanks for your support, guys. I hope to have more on the way soon.
