A trap... he should have expected that... what on earth was he thinking? Travis was sent flying through the air, a faint sheen noticeable around his suit as he found himself sailing backward from the force of the explosion. Thankfully, his powered armor also had its shields for protection, so the suit and himself were undamaged, although it had served as a nasty surprise and certainly a close call for him. He eventually found himself careening for the side wall of the canyon, looking as though it was going to smack into him with the force of a freight train. Fortunately, there was still time... a split second, but enough. Travis positioned himself to latch onto the wall. If he got it right, he would be able to kick off the rock face and get back into the pursuit. If he got it wrong, he was probably going to be unconscious for awhile. The rock face seemed to loom in slow motion as the moment of impact approached, Travis noticing all the sand kicked up by the blast. He moved to grab onto the ledge; it was now or never… 3… 2… 1… He felt something solid in his right hand grip as the bottom of his feet landed correctly onto the rocky interface as he planned. Travis breathed a sigh of relief. Taking a moment to press a button on his visor, he changed his visual to the X-ray setting and positioned his legs as though he was going to springboard. The hunter was inclined to use thermal in a situation like this, but it occurred to him that the thermal mode would be very ineffective in the heat of the day. Furthermore, the X-ray would probably give him a chance of seeing more traps the thief had laid out... at least he hoped. Kicking off the rock, Travis heard shots fired from what he knew to be the familiar sound of an energy firearm as he rocketed through the cloud of sand and landed on the ground to continue the pursuit. What else could it be, anyway? “Can’t say I expected that nasty surprise, but I should have. Is everyone alright? No missing body parts or anything?” He asked over the com, following the man (at least from what he could see it was a man) on foot. Hopefully those probes could show where he was headed. |

“copy that, moving in-“ The deep bellow of an explosive detonation filled the comm. and Ra immediately closed the channel. “A pity really,” he habitually thought out loud, this had been one of the few times he had been flying the ship without Shin constantly monitoring his progress “from the advanced weapons and equipment I hoped that she’d been able to keep the raiders distracted for a short while. Still, there was always the chance of Travis or one of the other hunters surviving the traps long enough to fight them.” The Talyn shot forwards, not so much accelerating as jumping from a hover to fully flight as the thrusters cut out and the main engines activated with a bone shaking jolt, and Ra immediately pulled downwards to avoid the shadow black ship as it fled from area, most likely a hired gun fleeing from the attack on the camp. Noticing the dust and dirt gathering at the base of the canopy he pulled the ship up into the sky once more making a single pass low over the rocks scanning for any possible traps which could kill the hunters. Not that there was much point, the ship’s scanners had never been designed to search for anything as small or minute as tripwires or even large explosives but if he had to defend his actions later on the telemetry of the scans would ‘prove’ he was on the hunter’s side. And if he was lucky some of the gravel and dirt cast into the air by the low flying run a few of the traps might either be activated or uncovered by the others to find. A small blip appeared on the cockpit’s HUD as Jenosa’s coordinates kicked in and the targeting computer chimed that the ship was now within maximum firing distance. Thumbing the firing trigger both of the ships turret cannons slid down from their alcoves below the nose and began to lock on, the only problem was that one was utterly burned out and the second had a malfunction which meant it was more likely to blow up than get off a successful shot. Still, if the thieves attempted to shake off the target locks it would slow them down. Or would simplt make them stop and start shooting at the lightly armoured craft. “Nothing ventured…” Ra muttered quietly under his breath as both locks acquired their targets. In many situations when attacking an enemy, stealth was Matthew's prefered option. However, in a few cases, his subordinate Sergeant Major Jonathon Reach's idea of "use more guns" was more appropriate. This was one of those times. Matthew had already pulled his Desert Eagle out of its concealed holster and was wearing it at his hip before he even got back to where his sister was. "Get rid of that silencer, let's move!" he shouted at Kathi, who was still puting her shoulder armor back on after giving herself the shot of anti-psychotics. "Jesus Christ, Matt, just give me one second!" Kathi retorted as the shoulder pad locked into place. Matthew was already running towards the bounty hunters, so Kathi stood, quickly shook the sand and dust off herself, then sprinted after her brother. "You follow the Chozo, I'll stick with Jenny and Clark," Matthew said. "Try not to get shot." He then dashed as fast as he could in the direction the two hunters had gone...the same direction an explosion had just come from, no doubt a trap set by the raiders. Raiders. That was the proper term for these people, not thieves. Matthew was a thief, a sneaky bastard who got through his job by not being noticed. These people didn't give a damn about stealth once they began their attack. It was really somewhat sickening to Matthew that they would be the successful ones and get away, while he got caught. That kind of bullshit was unacceptable, in his mind. When he caught up with Jenosa and Travis, they looked like they hadn't really been hurt by the blast at all. A good sign. As was the fact that they were now within rang of their quarry. Matthew flicked the fire selector on the side of his assault rifle to burst, aimed at the retreating form, and pulled the trigger twice. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Meanwhile, Kathi had just caught up with the Chozo when she saw the other raider - a woman, apparently - pointing an old, yet still high powered, rifle at the armored bird-man. The girl had no idea how strong Chozo armor was, although it must have been pretty strong if it had kept Samus Aran alive for as long as it did. Kathi then registered the flash from the rifle, and the sharp crack of the thirty-ought-six. The girl didn't stop to check the Chozo, but hastily lined up the reflex sight on the COBRA and let out an eight round burst of 5.56mm bullets. Without bothering to see if there were any results, Kathi ducked behind the nearest available rock. The Chozo power armor might be able to take a hit from a battle rifle like that, but the light SWAT armor had no chance of stopping a round that powerful. |

Z'Gato continued to build speed, a little bar on the side of his HUD slowly filling. As he did so, the sniper would eventually see Z'Gato's figure begin to glow a bright yellow...that is, if Z'Gato's proximity alert didn't warn him of incoming fire. At that distance, it wasn't like the Chozo could really do anything to avoid the armor-piercing round, but he acted more out of instinct than anything else. Ducking down towards the sand beneath him, the round impacted the large shoulder armor on his left side, an alarm blaring in his ear of impact damage, but the armor held thanks to the thin energy barrier surrounding his armor. Not that it did a whole lot of good in the long run, practically halting Z'Gato's advance just through sheer force. While no one around him could hear, he uttered a curse as he tried to press forward, beginning his sprint again to try and close the distance. At this time, Chozo noticed the woman behind him (whom was laying down support fire). If he had time, he would have suggested to try and flank the sniper's position, but he was already committed to the charge, and he would follow through with the fury of his ancients. Eventually, he would be able to close in on the hill and make it difficult for his quarry to aim at him again, but just to be sure, Z'Gato leveled his arm cannon and switched to its standard mode, firing a spray of energy blasts toward the sniper as he ran. In retrospect, he probably would have been able to more effectively close the distance in Maru Maru form, but with that last impact from the sniper's rifle, it had damaged a couple of servos allowing him to do so. He would need to make repairs on the suit in order to transform again. |

"C'mon, I'm just itching to see what other tricks you got." Nick only grinned, and smashed the butt of his shotgun against Jenosa's nose, dropping her to the ground. "That good enough for ya, darlin'?" He didn't have time to savor his brief victory, however. A hail of bullets peppered the rocks where he was standing. He fired a few shotgun blasts in Matthew's direction, and then a couple more at Travis, just for good measure. Something off in the distance caught his eye. Someone had poked up from a hiding place and was waving at his compatriots. Big mistake. All it did was make him into a target. Nick aimed his shotgun at Set and fired. By this time, explosive shotgun shells were going off all over the place. Anyone coming at him would be caught in the barrage. Up above his head, a gunship was bearing down on his location. The bastards were closing in, and there wasn't much he could do about it. Not much, except fight like a madman and try and take down as many of them as he could before they brought the hammer down. ........................... The bullet hit Big Bird, but didn't bring him down. It did, however, slow down his advance some, but not enough to keep him from firing a few energy blasts in her direction. Grace ducked her head and felt the heat from the blasts as they zipped by. She poked her head above the rocks, only to see someone else coming up on her position. It was the other girl in the group, the one who had been talking with the prisoner Jenosa had brought out. The girl was packing an assault rifle, a COBRA from the looks of it. Jimmy used to have one of those. He'd named it Mia. The girl fired a burst at Grace and dove for cover. "Oh honey," Grace said, "you just made the biggest mistake of your whole life." She peered through the scope and took aim at her assailant. Brown-haired white chick. Jimmy used to have one of those, too. Grace squeezed off a round at her, watching it ricochet off the rocks. "Come and get me bitch!" she yelled. "I dare ya! I double dare ya!" Edited by The Boss, Aug 16 2009, 02:17 AM.

Set's arm was still waving to Jenosa, as the shotgun was fired at him. His gloved right hand was torn off at the wrist by the incoming fire, sending it flying in front of him, in several tattered pieces. They landed a few feet away, leaving bloody smears to show their direction of travel. "Uh..." Set looked down at his mangled wrist, blood dripping down to the floor. "Uh..." He repeated, in too much shock to realise the damage that'd been done to him. Looking over at the bloody lumps that used to be his hand, another grunt was issued from his lipless mouth. "Uh..." Set slumped to the floor, cradling his butchered wrist, trying to do anything to stop the bleeding. He groaned as he pulled off the bandages from his scalp, and wrapped them tightly around his arm, in a weak attempt to staunch the flow of blood. His pinkish, melted scalp was definitely taking his mind off his wound though, itching as though every square inch was covered in lice. He huddled against the rock, trying not to expose himself further. "Uh...Help! Help please! Please!" he groaned weakly. Thinking for himself had done it again! |

The Talyn screeched downwards towards the ‘raiders’ location on a clear attack vector, only to have no reaction at all come from the targets. Ra’s usually calm and expressionless face frowned in bewilderment and reaching overhead flicked on and off the targeting computer, only to once again see no reaction what so ever from the ground below. “the hell…?” he looked down, anyone with anything more than a peashooter would have been taking pot shots at the shuttle by this point or running like hell to try and take off before the guns opened fire but he could see nothing which would indicate either… Ra was about to again reset the computer just to be sure when it bleeped loudly, a number of small orange circles appeared on the HUD magnifying the location and marking it out as enemy damage. It took a few seconds for Ra figure out exactly what he was seeing. The computer (like most of the craft’s combat systems) had been taken from one of the Federation’s old gunship designs used for high speed assaults on enemy cruisers and was specifically aimed at use outside of atmospheric conditions. It was now magnifying in upon one man (Nick) frantically firing what appeared to be an anti-personnel shotgun in every direction, registering it as hull fractures and debris. Ra grinned uncharacteristically at his luck, the computer’s design flaws having pinpointed both the man’s exact location and his armament. “If anyone is still listening on this channel,” he said switching the comm. back on as he rolled the shuttle to the left and making a tight turn back towards his target “cover your eyes and use only non-electronic targeting for the next few minutes, anyone in range prepare to take out the one with the shotgun.” Making a second ‘attack run’ directly over the raider, Ra switched from cannons to defensive measures as he passed over head with several panels opening up on the ship’s underside. A number of small objects fell from the panels and began exploding in flashes of phosphorescent light and strips of foil as they came within a few feet of the ground. The ‘defensive measures’ were simple chaff mines used to throw off visual and electronic targeting as pursuing ships came within range, they were heavily outdated but tended to work well as flares when necessary. Just as the last few mines fell from the rear the ship suddenly turned and switched to landing thrusters, the metal off it’s hull screeching in protest at the sudden change in momentum. The craft dropped like a stone but stopped a short distance above the ground as the last of the thrusters cut, from one side a hatch opened. Ra dived headlong out of the ship hitting the ground in a roll before leaping upright and sprinting towards Nick, trying to get within firing range before the effect of the mines wore off. Matthew felt the rounds from the shotgun hit his armor, and he twisted out of the raider's line of fire. Ducking behind a rock, he menatlly noted that his chest was likely going to be very badly bruised later. It was a good thing he had been standing at a bit of a distance, otherwise the shotgun could have easily penetrated the SWAT armor he wore It was designed to take either a large number of smaller rounds, and Matthew doubted that it would take much more punishment before it was fully compromised. He was about to take a potshot at the raider when Ra made the call over the radio. Matthew closed his eyes and looked away as the flares burst around the raider's position. When they stopped flashing, Matthew jumped out from behind the rock and ran forward, firing his assault rifle on full auto to keep up a semblance of suppressive fire. If he could get within pistol range, he could take out the problem in one .50, hollow-pointed shot. Matthew jumped behind another rock as he reloaded. He could see the raider from where he was. Matt set the assault rifle down, and quickly pulled out his pistol. He aimed and fired once, then ducked back down. At this range, it wouldn't matter how intact his armor was. An M90 could kill shielded opponents at point blank range, and Matthew didn't want to think about what it would do to his body if a shot hit him. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- There was a line between bravery and stupidity, Kathi reminded herself as the other woman taunted her. That's a thirty-ought-six, it has more than enough power to turn this light armor into junk. Kathi didn't move from her cover. If she wasn't going to be able to go beat up the person insulting her, she would have to give better than she got. "Why don't you come out yourself, coward! I triple dog dare you to show your own ugly face, slut!" Kathi didn't worry about overdoing it. Anything was fair game, especially if she could figure out what would piss off this raider the most. She picked up a small rock next to her and threw it on an overhead arc in the approximate direction of the woman in an attempt to distract her. As soon as the rock left her hand, she quickly stuck her head and gun out from behind the rock and squeezed off a few more rounds, then pulled back into cover as quickly as possible. |

Jenosa had actually been expecting a good bash in the face; there wasn't much she could do to avoid it with where she had landed, and with how overheated her gauntlets were. Plus it was a fight, you were bound to get socked in the face. Except the shotgun had brought up a blast from the past when she was just a rooky, impulsive and brash; and having fought someone with a shotgun toe-to-toe - close quarters. She felt the brunt of the force knock her onto the ground. Flooded with adrenaline, she barely registered that her nose had been broken and only the impact against the ground. Reflexively, she flicked her arm and shielded herself from a possible shotgun blast, releasing whatever energy she could to help protect her; but the raider's follow up never came; and she soon figured out he had been too distracted by everyone else. A foolhardy mistake, she thought, as the man could have easily made a follow up injure her more. She was quick to react to Ra's 'flare' tactic, and, shifting back onto her feet, took quick advantage of the confusion created. An energy shot hit Nick's hand, and it was enough to loosen his grip for a three-pronged, white claw, which was designed for bigger targets, to yank the shotgun out of his yank. The success was a followed by a "Yoink" as the gun slid across the sand under Jenosa's feet. The claw could be seen folding up and tugged back into Jenosa's gauntlet by a light blue, condensed energy tether; alongside a smiling, battled, bloodied face. "So," she pronounced, "you got any tricks up up your ass to keep fighting all of us?" |

Seeing himself surrounded on all sides - not to mention having just had his shotgun so unceremoniously yanked from his hands - Nick saw little other choice than to surrender. Of course, his first instinct was to whip out his pistol and simply plug Jenosa where she stood. And that's exactly what he was about to do... until the other guy, the one who had been tied up earlier, started firing his own sidearm in Nick's direction. The big Texan was forced to hit the deck until the shooting stopped. When he got up, there was Jenosa standing over him, ready to take him in. The gunship was still hovering overhead, and Travis was jogging up towards them. "So... you gon' tie me up now?" Nick said, making no effort to disguise the lecherous look in his eyes. .............................. "Why don't you come out yourself, coward! I triple dog dare you to show your own ugly face, slut!" Grace took exception to nearly everything the other woman had said. First and foremost was the ugly thing, but that was an obvious petty shot, so it could be quickly dismissed. Second was the implication that she was a slut. Not that she was pure, sweet and innocent... but she had her man. So what if Jimmy was married? So what if, when you got right down to it, he didn't actually like her all that much? And then there was her shocking breach of dare etiquette. She had leapfrogged two spots, going from Grace's Double Dare straight into a Triple-Dog Dare. It was one thing to go from the Double-Dog to the Triple-Dog, but to skip over both Double-Dog and Triple Dare? It was like going all in at the poker table with a nothing hand before you even see the flop. It was a bold move, no doubt about it. However, because the woman had committed such a serious faux pas, Grace felt no obligation to answer the dare as she normally would. "I got a better idea!" she shouted back. "Catch me if you can!" Grace slung her rifle on her shoulder and bolted off in the other direction, trying to bait Kathi into chasing her. They were playing this game on her terms, and a straight up foot race was definitely a fight on her turf. She doubted the other woman could keep up with her. Few humans could. |
