"Giahehehehe - hehehe!" "What is it?" "Ohhh, just that sweet tingling sensation down my spine when I feel like I'm on to something her on this dust ball." There was more cackling. "I can see that everyone else about the site has...set themselves up. It looks like it'll be a nice show. Still, being this far away, I would enjoy something to do." There was something of a malicious chuckle. "And that you will me good friend, for I think it would be prudent that nobody...leaves the planet, hehehehe. You'll get to use my ship; shoot them down...but do please try to make it that they'll live." "All the better challenge for me," the companion agreed. ---------------------------------- (OOC: here's me doing a little experimenting) Jenosa gave a long, deep sigh that exuded her anxiety; and held a tinge of embarrassment. This wasn't like her at all, even though she really did hate sharpshooters, thinking more level headed. "I'm sorry, this isn't like me at all," she apologized, "I just was feeling really jittery as of late, like..." She trailed off, one of her brows furrowing in thought. "Derad," she asked through her suit's connection, "when I wrangled that guy, Mathew, did I use..." "Your Adrenaline Rush?" Derad finished, "Jenosa, you've been using since you've been trying to get everyone paranoid about a sniper." Travis could see Jenosa's face go incredulous as she put one finger on her ear, indicating she was communicating with someone. "You've got to be imagining things Derad. I- "Jenosa," he growled, cutting her off, "let me be serious in that, you've be only using the setting at a quarter of its actual potential - and that's only enough to make you feel twitchy. But for some reason, you're body's not have much of a reaction to it." "Then explain why I'm feeling so damn reckless all of a sudden," she retorted, unaware of her expression changing to irritation. "Because it's been building up, that's why. I honestly thought you were aware of this in the first place, but it's clear that this may be...happening on a subconscious manner." Growling inwardly, she decided to let the subject drop for the time being; there were more important matters at hand. Before she could say anything, though, she found, to her surprise, the lipless Idiot apologizing to her. She looked at him with unblinking, bemused expression. "Umm...ok, I'm not going to ask why the sudden change of heart due to our circumstances now." And she especially didn't like the position she was in; not being targeted by snipers, that was something she was used to, but actually be placed in charge of a group, or so to speak. She enjoyed working solo - that's what she enjoyed about bounty hunting a lot - but teamwork with other hunters was a problem for her. And all this team chatting was making her more antsy by the second. Maybe it was the adrenaline being subconsciously stored in her body, but she enjoyed moving while thinking on the fly in - granted, she would take a little time to get her Intel and think of what she should do in general. But chatting time and time over was not her joy. She closed her eyes for a moment , thinking about the deep, intuitive skill she had used to manipulate the energy in her gauntlets. And for some reason, it eased her a bit. And without warning, she clasped both hands around Mathew's head and forced him to stand up; the gauntlet that glow seemed to scold the right side of his head, but also put something in it... "Now, where were we," she spoke to him a serious tone of voice, but at the same time in his pained ear, an earpiece crackled inside of it, clearly audible to him over her voice, but only to him. It was Jenosa's voice, as her suit's interface allowed her to directly speak without moving; like she was making her thoughts audible. "Sorry about that," she apologized, but still sounding very serious, "but I gotta make this realistic to work. If you really want to get on my good side, you'll pay close attention to everyone else in the camp when the shit really starts hitting the fan. Don't know who else might be a sneak; now hide the ear piece." "You'll be sticking with me for the moment until I know I can trust you fully," she said out loud, "try anything funny, and you'll regret. I'll guarantee you that." She noticed the look she was getting from Travis, and made a sly wink that only he perceived. She hoped he got the point. However, just as she was about to talk to Ra, chaos erupted. Almost before the first few missiles, Jenosa's vision turned almost completely gray, with people and various dangers still having their color; and time seemed to slow down for a moment. Her world flashed back to normal, with her holding a sphere of pure white energy in preparation to protect her. She searched franticly with that sixth sense of hers, but even it couldn't penetrate the amount of chaos going on. There was just way too much movement and explosions - the sand and running people included - that was disrupting it. To her disgruntlement, Jenosa felt helpless as mayhem erupted, but she smiled just before she ended; she recognized the plan. As soon as everything calmed down, she moved to a specific area of the camp, her gauntlets glowing at she did. She then spun like a ballet to get the best spread, a slow flash occurred that encompassed part of the camp. Jenosa focused strongly on the fire, telling the smart energy 'particles' target the fires or thermal energy she could identify; and avoid the civilians. The effect worked to her liking, for as soon as her vision, and a few other people, returned, it was noticeable that most of the fires were gone - there was quite a bit of frost and a small bunk of ice or two where they used to be. Before she could say anything, the Birdbrain spoke to her via comms unit about the attack. She chuckled at his assumption, "I beg to differ Birdbrain!" She turned her comms unit to multi band frequency so the other hunters could hear, "The heavy ordinance was clearly used as a diversion - because I'm guessing that there's only a group of two to five people on this job. They're skilled, but they don't want to get sticky with us hunters, other wise their attacks would have been focused on mostly on us. This attack was scattered brained, meant to create chaos and confusion - unless they're idiots with retarded aim - and I think they just made out with a buckload of relics. Hold on." It could have been her imagination, but she felt the telltale sensation of another one of those strange, energetic artifacts; and she briefly felt off to the distance. She wasted no time, the last of that stored "Adrenaline Rush" surging through her body - and it felt 'good,' this time, to have her body moving with a real purpose. The world went gray once more, and she seemed to zip right through to camp with surprising speed. She came out of the came when the last of it ended, feeling rather light headed - but sensing the artifact clearly this time. It was definitely moving. "I got him in my sights. Our thief is moving to the west, towards the cliffs where the sniper is supposed to be. I'm going to peruse; someone get some medical to the wounded please, and not order people around, but Travis, try to get one of your probes over the location I specified. And Bird of War," she added towards Z'Gato, "do please keep that sniper busy." (OOC: This is just for SaintlyTurky, but Set could still confront his worst fears before the fires are put out. Although, not all of the fires are. Have fun) Edited by CEMP, Jul 14 2009, 10:03 PM.

(OOC: Sorry about the quality, I’m having to finish this close to midnight.) Various red dots of small explosions appeared across the dig site as some form of bombardment demolished the various buildings causing one of the vehicles brought by the archeologist to flip skywards landing upon one of the smaller tents and chaos reigned over the entire area. Looking on at the heavily pixilated images created by the information gathered and assembled by the scanner array, Shin got the feeling that while this would have undoubtedly been a very good distraction to allow the ship to enter orbit it was a far cry not what Ra had in mind. The android’s power systems and unit were still operational and he seemed to have taken no damage thus far but it would be best to take advantage of the anarchy while it lasted. Turning to one of the slave AIs used to operate the ship, represented by a simply whirl of colours and symbols than a humanoid figure like the more advanced and sentient variants, Shin silently gave the command for the ship to begin the creation of a gate to reach the planet. Adding as an afterthought, an order for another of the AIs to continue monitoring the various stellar phenomena within the system for later analysis. Beneath the various lines and gaps where the sections of plating met with the other areas of the hull, blue light began to emit from the many power conduits and cores as the gate drive came online and several thin streams of energy were fired from multiple emitters across the hull into an area of space directly in front of the ship. No one fully knew how the gate drives worked, nor what form of energy was used, most had been constructed by directly replicating the systems of the more advanced derelicts the Commonwealth encountered over the years but the engineers and AIs knew enough about the systems to keep them maintained and how to manipulate them. Shin had been experimenting with the use of the drive for many years now, seeing how energy output could affect the time limit on the gate itself and most importantly how it could be masked to directly mirror the movements of other ships. Had anyone been scanning or viewing the area just outside the atmosphere of G79’s northeastern hemisphere all they would have detected was hyperspace disturbance with a very high energy output as the Lightbringer, appearing to most as a simple hulk of metal with most of it’s systems offline, fell into orbit around the planet in line with the location of the dig site. A single encoded signal began to emit from the ship almost as soon as it came within reach of the planet. --------------------------- Shaking his head, Ra’s vision blurred as he forced himself upright, trying to take into account what was happening amidst the screaming, flames and gunfire. Almost as soon as the first bomb had gone off, Ra had made a run for the main tent intending to make the excuse of trying to safeguard the mercenaries employer while stealing any of the technological or weapon based relics excavated from the site. Part way there he has been caught in the blast when the crane towering over the dig had exploded, the force of it sending him flying into one of the trenches dug by the archeologists. Several of the hunters and mercs had disappeared from sight, most likely either dead or fleeing but a few others seemed to be trying to take order of the situation. “Is everyone still alive!?” The yell came from another hunter, a tall black armoured figure armed with a shoulder cannon (Hukkal). “I doubt it!” Ra replied “did you see where the attack came from-“ he was interrupted as an icon flashed in the top right corner of his right, a single message that Shin was trying to contact him. Spotting a corpse, Ra sprinted over to it and knelt down appearing as if he were checking the dead man’s pulse and wounds as he accepted the signal and- “I take it that was not your planned distraction” Shin’s voice immediately greeted him, sounding humorous if nothing else. Ra grunted in reply, even now the AI could still be so far removed from what was taking place in the mission and finding amusement in the mass destruction. “I’ll take that as a yes, despite things not going according to plan I’ve managed to get into orbit. I very much doubt that anyone would be watching the skies during that bombardment. Did you see who attacked?” “No, I was trying to get to the artifact tent.” “Then I suggest you find out as- what?” Shin sounded almost surprised as another AI contacted him “It seems as if a few of your people are heading after the group who attacked you, they’re stating that from the bombardment pattern that… ah.” “what?” “The raiders seem to have stolen the artifacts the site have dug up, or at least that’s what’s being stated.” Ra swore loudly but continued “is there any way you can track the raiders?” “Too few people, you’d have to head after them on foot or in the boat you came down in. Good luck and get to artifacts before the other hunters arrive.” There was a hiss of static as Shin closed the link. Rising from the corpse he had been kneeling over Ra sprinted away, as he passed the black clad hunter he simply excused himself by saying “if you can get any defenses made or any fighting force organized then it might help if they hit us again, I’m going to take my ship and see if there is a second force heading this way.” Turning he sprinted straight for the landing site. (OOC: Just trying to catch up, really.) The first sniper shot had Matthew extremely worried, but he didn't say anything. There was likely going to be an attack soon (no one blew their cover for nothing). Considering his position, however, he didn't say anything. Honestly, when Jenosa had picked him up off the ground and started talking to him, Matthew thought she might have been psychic up until the moment he noticed that the sound was coming from an earpiece. While an officer of his rank wouldn't normally have to put up with such a scolding - Matthew could hardly believe he was letting a bounter hunter other than Travis Clark order him around - but in this situation, he didn't really have much of a choice. He nodded his head in agreement with the things Jenosa said. After all, Matthew needed to do anything he possibly could to keep his superiors from knowing about this. When the attack started, however, both Matthew and Kathi took to the nearest pieces of cover almost instantly. Matthew knew there were only three real reasons to use such high powered weaponry in war: suppression/extermination, impracticality of stealth, and diversion. Judging by the fact that he had been doing just fine with stealth until Jenosa had somehow caught him, and that the rocket fire wasn't being aimed at the mercs or at destroying the whole camp, Matthew figured it was the second option. Because Jenosa had already left chasing after something, going a direction Matthew didn't have time to register, he simply crouched and ran over to his sister, who was undoubtedly cursing the fact that she was being shot at by a sniper when all she had to return fire with was a pistol and a silenced SMG. "I'm going to get the other guns," he ordered. "Stay here." Before Kathi could raise a protest, Matthew was already on a dash to Nox. Inside it, he quickly grabbed another pistol and his prefered 7.62mm assault rifle, as well as a suit of SWAT armor much like Kathi's, but painted a mottled grey camouflage pattern instead of the standard blue and grey police color scheme. After grabbing the equipment, Matthew ran back to the camp as fast as he could, hoping that he got back before Jenosa noticed he was gone and got pissed. Meanwhile, Kathi was going on her own mad dash around camp to make sure the lead archaeologist was alright. When Tholburn's status as "alive" had been confirmed, Kathi made her way back to where everyone had been assembled before. The distraction had worked, that she knew almost for certain. She also was worried that the next attack might make a more lethal use of the missiles. The investigator was used to getting shot at, but usually that was with a 9mm or an assault rifle, not rockets. She didn't know how to handle the situation, either. As it turned out, that last bit wasn't so important. As Jenosa and the Chozo ran off in pursuit of the raiders, a very familiar, shrill alarm began blaring from a device at Kathi's hip. "Aw, hell," she complained as she shut the alarm off and sat down. She quickly removed the armor on her left arm, revealing skin that was covered in various scars, all of which appeared to be from scratch marks. Less than ten seconds later, the antipsychotic drugs were in her system, and she was free from worry about insanity for the time being. What she didn't know was that one of the five remaining syringes she had on her was filled with saline solution. |

Gunfire, and now explosions. Not small ones, but gigantic ones. Ones that left lots of fire. Set threw himself to the ground as chaos erupted around him. He lay there, shaking with fear and trying not to piss himself. He lay like that for some time, hoping not to get burnt again. Arma was speaking, so he listened intently for orders. "I got him in my sights. Our thief is moving to the west, towards the cliffs where the sniper is supposed to be. I'm going to peruse; someone get some medical to the wounded please, and not order people around, but Travis, try to get one of your probes over the location I specified. And Bird of War," she added towards Z'Gato, "do please keep that sniper busy." When no orders addressed to him came, he looked up. The majority of the flames seemed to have died down, but there were still enough to keep Set away for a while. He saw Jenosa running off towards the cliffs. As he had been given no direct orders, he followed her, regretting wearing a load of heavy ammo belts and wishing he had a change of trousers. |

(OOC: Soooooo sorry for not posting, something happened over the last few days that needed my attention.) Jenosa threw him a wink. Good, she was okay... However, Travis' relief was short lived. The camp seemed to erupt into a whirlwind of fire, anguish and sand as missiles honed in from the cliffs and onto the site. Explosions rocked the ground and echoed off the canyon walls as more gunshots broke through the air, a massive column of sand and smoke rising through the sky. However,Travis was unmoved both physically and mentally. After all, he had already figured their plan out; this was just a more explosive way of them executing it. He wasn't going to be fooled by this explosive charade. The fires seemed to be consuming many areas of the camp, people still running around frantically, when Jenosa did something... interesting, to be sure. As quick as a flash it seemed, she formed a sphere of energy in her hand. Pure and white like snow as it was, she spun around like a top and in a whirl of red hair and white light, the energy extended out... and formed into... ICE. It turned into ICE, and what flustered him more was that she didn't even aim. (Intruiging ability she has there...) He thought to himself, obviously not stopping to ponder the mystery; instead, he scanned it. More conversations were heard across the comms, and it seemed the Chozo was already on the chase. Jenosa soon followed, as did the Lipless Wonder. "I got him in my sights. Our thief is moving to the west, towards the cliffs where the sniper is supposed to be. I'm going to peruse; someone get some medical to the wounded please, and not order people around, but Travis, try to get one of your probes over the location I specified.” “Way ahead of you Jenosa,” Travis replied as he pressed a few buttons on the arm interface, also blazing a path through the camp at surprising speed. One of the surviving mercenaries gaped momentarily at the blur of armor going past him. “Constantine, can you reroute the two remaining probes to fly to that location?” He asked as he did a leap over a dune. [“I was already doing that actually.”] Came the reply. “Roger. Coming right behind you, Jenosa. So, Bird of War, what brings you here anyway? I’m pretty sure a member of the Chozo race doesn’t just show up randomly in the middle of a dustbowl like this; in fact, nobody does. Is there something here we should know about?” Travis was unsure why he was even revealing this information, but considering the camp had been attacked and at least a single member of the Chozo was involved, maybe this one knew what was going on. |

(OOC: Just trying to get things moving again) Half spiriting and half stumbling through the maze of landing gear and hulls which were the parked ships, Ra searched frantically for his craft eventually finding it partially tilted onto it’s side and the telltale scorch marks of explosives dulling the streamline dark green exterior. Relatively unconcerned with whether this was a direct attack or simply one of the missiles which had overshot it’s target, he flipped open a large panel on the underside of it’s nose and keyed in the code triggering a large section of the hull to fall away with a hiss of hydraulics. Clambering inside and closing the hatch behind him, he flicked on the main comm. system as the Talyn’s slow start up system began and Shin’s head appeared on one of the several screens adorning the right side of the cramped cockpit. “Need more information?” he asked “The channels which the other hunters are using, namely those trying to get back the artifacts” “one second… you now have them, listed under contacts. Now please hurry up and finish the job here” Ra nodded curtly and closed the channel triggering the launching sequence and bracing himself as the ship’s launching thrusters spluttered for a few moments before it pulled into the air swaying drunkenly and hovering unsteadily for a few moments headed skywards and turning on the spot until it faced northwards. “To anyone receiving this, this is Ra” he said opening up a ‘wide’ signal to the new comm. channels listed in the computer core “I am onboard my ship and going to go after those who attacked the dig site, I can reach them before anyone else and might be able to slow them down but I need… directions. Has anyone got any advice?” |

Nick sprinted through the ravine as fast as his legs could carry him, which was to say not nearly as fast as he was when he was a Marine. Grace was right, though he would never let her have the satisfaction. Then again, she wasn't quite as fast as she used to be either. It seemed to him that her knee injury a few years ago robbed her of a bit of her quickness. She was still pretty fast, nobody could doubt that. But maybe she wasn't getting to that top gear quite as quickly as she once did. He slid behind some rocks, his planned hiding spot. The charges he had set before the initial strike were about fifty yards or so back towards the camp. Anyone following him was in for a nasty surprise. Nick primed the detonator and crouched behind the huge rock. He heard shouting behind him, and took a peek around the corner. A pair of shadows were visible just a ways away. As soon as he saw Jenosa and Travis come around the bend, he set off the charges. .................... Grace saw a figure emerge from the smoke and start to come in her direction. The bird-man. Chozo, she reminded herself. And he was coming pretty fast. She loaded her rifle with the high explosive rounds, then peeked back through the scope. Not really knowing what she was up against, other than Nick's simple description of "ancient race, really advanced," she couldn't really estimate how effective she could be here. With that in mind, she wasn't taking any chances. She lined up the crosshairs right between the Chozo's eyes and pulled the trigger. |

"Just go beyond the rocks we're going towards," she respond, but also sending the direction their theif was headed in via her suit, "our theif appears to be hiding around there. Keep your eyes peeled out for any traps." There was something strangely thrilling to Jenosa about feeling the hot air whip through her face, her heart pounding within her body, the flexing of her muscles and, most of all, being on the edge of danger. It was like playing a sports game for her, only there was a big chance of you dying if you screwed up anything. She just revelled in the adrenaline rush created by this anxiety and excitement. Of course she wasn't one to start any fights; everyone else was usually the instigator. She only started fights when she was on the job; any other time, she was trying to relax or do something else 'recreational. When you were given a job, you always had to expect some kind of danger. Even if you giving the chase to someone. She had been expecting some kind of booby trap, and expected it to be along the same path that their theif had taken. She wasn't a person with super strong armor after all, at least when she was a professional in her past days, and it was her smarts that had gotten her through. She also wasn't as fast as Travis was. The boost in reaction rate did allow to run fast as well as react, but she lacked the ability to keep it up constantly; which was a good thing, in a way, as there were side-effects to overusing the Adrenaline Rush setting. It gave her time to adjust her course while Travis took the brunt of the damage, being more armored - she had a hunch there was a shield for his armor. The problem was, you could never tell what the trap was until it hit, and although Jenosa had guessed explosives, she couldn't estimate their blast radius. She found her caught by the side of it, feeling the scorch of heat and stink of debrish and shrapel. It was like her entire body had been hit by a giant punch, sending her flying . But she was still conscious, and many years of acrobatic experiance, both recreational and combat, kicked in; as well as the adrenaline rush. She was only able to do it for two short seconds, but those seconds turned into fifteen as it allowed her to react to rising ground...and the thief that she was now in firing range of, all thanks to his own booby trap. One touched the sandy ground, almost slipping but allowing her to flip back onto her two feet; and at the same time, use her other hand to pull out her energy hangun and fire a three-round burst at the guy. Jenosa had essentially recovered from shockwave bast an impressive, acrobatic flip. Amongst Jenosa's superficial cut ridden and lightly bloodied face - some of the blood from her forehead becoming indistinguishibal from her red hair - there was a big grin that silentlky chuckled to Nick: "C'mon, I'm justing itching to see what other tricks you got." (OOC: Just realised someone without lips shouldn't be able to say certain words. I'll think of something but either way I'm going to have to edit previous posts a bit. Nothing drastic.) Set was struggling to keep up, Jenosa a distant figure. He wasn't that physically fit, and lugging around several ammo belts definitely didn't help him. He cursed as they dug into his shoulders, vexing the tender scar tissue. He groaned as a stitch formed at his side, his breath burning his throat. He was almost about to wrench of the ammo belts, when not that far away, something exploded. He stopped, heart thumping with exhaustion and fear as he felt the warm air on his face. Jenosa was lost in the smoke. Shakily, he ran after her. --- Set had noticed her. She wasn't that far away, and she was holding a gun at... nothing discernable at least. Whatever it was she was aiming at was hidden by a rocky outcropping. The rock could provide a tactical advantage, but at the cost of his 'freedom'. He would be visible to Jenosa though, and she could easily provide any necessary orders once he was there. It seemed like a worthy exchange. He walked the rest of the way, growing increasingly aware of a strong smell of urine that seemed to be coming from him. He must've let his fear get the better of him, back when the camp erupted into flames. He pushed himself against the rock, waving his arm to reveal his location to Jenosa, and hopefully not whoever she was aiming at. |

The black entity came to as it's exoskeleton's medical systems administered some vital compounds into it's bloodstream. Hukkal made a long, drawn out sighing noise, though it really sounded more like a dull digital roar than anything else. He got up and looked around. The first thing he noticed, was that there was moderate ocular damage in the infrared wavelength. When he saw in Visible, everything was fine. When he saw in infrared, there were patches of impenetrable black, slight distortions, and confusing afterimages. There must've been something seriously hot in the recent vicinity. Made sense, seeing as there was a smoldering truck laying right next to him, something he had apparently just avoided before blacking out. There had to have been another attack. Hukkal's foglets were also administered to the site of the damage. They'd be able to temporarily act as thermal photoreceptors, but it wouldn't be a permanent fix. Hukkal noticed Set waving. After somehow managing to survive another bombardment, barely avoid being crushed by a truck, and nearly blinded by several explosive flashes (his nanomachines were still gathering themselves into place to be used as photoreceptors, and placing links into ocular nerves), Set's waving motion looked like a warm blob with a slightly cooler stick attached to it, waving about in the air for a moment, partially obscured by a splotch of extreme hot, though Hukkal figured it was an afterimage. As the Esvogg moved through the shadows of what was left of the camp, another long, sharp shadow drifted across a small portion of the camp. Krak Jakomo II. The immense danger in the area had prompted it to temporarily flee, and it was now no doubt looking for a space to land, at the cost of being a sitting duck, in case whoever attacked was still present within visible range of the camp. A very swift electronic order was sent to the thing, and the Krak Jakomo II darted off back in the direction it came, with a visible pulse of red static as it accelerated to full speed. It's proximity to the ground caused several tents directly beneath it's path to turn to carpets, draped over whatever was inside. Set was huddled against a large rock, a fair distance away yet. Hukkal stepped up the pace.
