Derad, although he wasn't necessarily directly talking to Dead Eye's A.I., was relieved when they replied and told him they were going to hold their fire. He would have had Jidan thank them greatly if the next piece of news had not made his heart sink.

There was a brief moment of disbelief, only to be filled with a deep sorrow when his scanners registered her dead body by looking for her DNA. Even then, for some reason, he found it hard believe that this had actually happened; being in brief contact with her own experiences, he knew she was a remarkably resilient woman.

Thus, he had to ask, "How...how'd she die?"

-------------------

The woman replacing Derad inside the ruins called herself Mino. She knew it was certainly eerie to suddenly have an A.I. with an unusual method of multi-tasking, and she did her best to act human as much as possible while she helped direct manual connections. It was mostly hard wires and switches. although some sections were discovered to be so aged they no longer worked. She spoke in a kind, wispy voice that only showed a hint of seriousness in them.

There wasn't really much time for introductions, as time was quite against them, but then they heard her speak in low voice, "Oh god...no."

As soon as questions was asked by Kathi and Tholburne, she replied with sorrow in her voice, "Jenosa Arma...has passed."
"I believe that the human spirit is indomitable. If you endeavor to achieve, it will happen given enough resolve. It may not be immediate, and often your greater dreams is something you will not achieve within your own lifetime. The effort you put forth to anything transcends yourself, for there is no futility even in death."

"W--what?" Tholburne asked, leaning on one of the walls nearby to steady herself as her legs felt extremely weak. Out of all of the strange people and creatures that had arrived on this planet to either aid or hurt her efforts here, Tholburne had trusted Ms. Arma the most, and now that she was gone, she felt very alone, despite all the effort all the others were making. It was difficult to remind herself that there were still others here worth fighting for as tears started to well up in her eyes again.

The woman fell to her knees and sniffed for a moment, trying to fight back the tears she felt. A part of her wanted to cry, but more of her knew that more would die if herself and Kathi didn't keep doing what they were doing.

But damnit. Why was it so hard?

====================================

Z'Gato grunted under the firepower of the enemy marines, bullets and plasma shots impacting his armor at various places, either the resiliance of his own personal barriers standing firm or the mere fortitude of his armor holding true as the Chozo continued his assault against his enemies. In a way, his mind wasn't on the current battlefield, but rather re-living the events so many years ago, when the Zebesians assaulted world after world held by the Chozo. Fighting against the Zebesians, and then fighting against his own kin.

What he saw weren't marines, but Warriors in power armor similar to his own. He rounded a corner and leveled his blaster at one of them, firing a blast of molten plasma into the face of one and dropping him instantly.

Suddenly, a small circular object landed near Z'Gato and exploded, causing the avian warrior to be flung from his position about ten meters in a random direction, landing on the ground with a heavy grunt. His suit had absorbed most of the damage, but the sheer shockwave had injured internal organs and, even now, his suit was struggling to contain the bleeding as well as inject artificial adrenaline and painkillers, yet Z'Gato could still feel the pain in his back despite it all. He slowly came to his feet, just as he heard somekind of transmission about blowing the ship up.

He hated leaving a battle unfinished, his pride hurt at retreating and showing the enemy his back, yet his tactical mind told him this was the best option. Once again, another internal war raged for a critical few seconds until Z'Gato rolled into his Maru Maru form and began rolling away from the ship.

"Do it."

Travis glared back at the cell for a moment with eyes that could sizzle an egg. "Ask the witch in there, I'm sure she could tell you plenty. She did it after all; she stabbed her."

He sat back down in the cockpit chair for a moment, taking a moment to give a long, steady exhale.

(Calm down, Travis, this isn't the time to be getting caught in anger...) He thought to himself as he sat down in the cockpit, taking a moment to let tension release from his arms and legs; it wasn't going to do anyone any good if he was caught up and tensed.

"I want to know... the others, how did they survive? I'm going to guess you had something to do with that shield appearing earlier as well. So what are we on really, a desert planet in the middle of nowhere, or is this planet really home to an ancient installation?"

He patched a channel to Z'gato. "Z'gato, come to my ship, it'd be helpful to have you in on this discussion... it's important, bird of war."

"Everything is important, apparently," Z'Gato said, a bit of venomous sarcasm entering his voice. He complied anyway, still breathing heavily from his injuries, wincing in pain each time the ball of his Maru Maru form hit the ground from a jump, eventually closing in on Travis' ship. As soon as he neared it enough to board, he rolled out of the Maru Maru, taking a moment to catch his breath after that kind of glorious and rigorous battle, leaning on a wall next to the ship's boarding ramp. Glorious, yet it wasn't finished yet, and their enemies still remained, unassailed, untested, unchecked.

Z'Gato slammed his fist into the wall, growling low in anger at his failure to stop their assault completely. The fury in his heart burned rigorously as he finally stepped aboard the ship, his body language looking irritated.

"And what is so important that I must cease making war with my enemies?"

((Shin, tell me if this works for you.))

An explosion shook Emily Voree from her position near the door of the dropship. Debris rained from above, parts of the Mosquito crashing into the sand in the dim light of the moon. The fire, however, lit things perfectly well in time to see a gunship, which appeared from nowhere, chasing down the remainin Mosquito, quickly adding another metal shower to the forecast. A piece of shrapnel slashed across her cheek, making the officer curse and reach her hand up to it, a light stream of crimson already flowing between her fingers. She cursed, firing a few, random and completely off-target shots out of the troop bay of the dropship. Her pistol slowly fell when the gunship circled back around, hovering ominously above them like an Angel of Death. "Commander, get your men in here....NOW!"

The men began falling back, firing randomly in an attempt to hit their assailant. The power-armored attacker seemed to be able to be everywhere at once; firing from one position, scrambling to the next. That didn't mean, though, that their shots were being completely ineffectual. Gleason had seen the warrior stagger a few times as rounds hit home. Still, their own, slapdash attempt at military-grade power armor was a few levels below this mercenaries' own custom build; they were getting hammered. The Commander looked away for what only seemed like a second -- to acknowledge the Lieutenant's order and to register a few of his own -- when the gunfire died down. He looked up, eyes darting back and forth in the very dim lighting. "Where'd he go?"

"I don't know, sir. He was there a minute ago!"

"Fall back, reinforce the perimeter. C'mon, get to the dropship." The Commander checked the ammo count on his rifle; half a clip left, just enough to make it to a better position to take cover and reload, when the first scream rose up. The farthest trooper, the one closest to Blake, didn't stand a chance. He was simply sliced like a blade of grass, being cut nearly in half as his body fell, bloodied. The next Marine in line had enough time to turn and see her attacker, before the blade was thrust through her abdomen. She hesitated for a brief moment, frozen in the doubled-over stance. Blood slowly seeped from her lips before she fell backwards off of his blade, enough time for the few remaining Marines to turn and let loose a poorly-aimed burst at the man. A plasma bolt shot past Ra's face, warming the metal with it's heat. The reaction was almost as fast as the shot, though; the marine recieved a single, nearly-beheading slash across the throat, aspyxiating as he fell to his knees. The other two stumbled backwards, firing at Ra as they went; a few bullets and orbs of plasma impacted the armor, it's shields wavering. The assailant lept forward, closing the distance between himself and the two marines and the Commander in a single bound.

It all happened in about four seconds, but Commander Gleason's muscle memory was acting on it's own. As the third body fell, Gleason's finger depressed on the trigger, firing a single shot of plasma but overheating the battery with a building charge. Ra plowed through one marine, and turned to the other; the only thing that was keeping the armored juggernaut from slashing at Gleason was the simple fact that the other Marine was closer. Before the blade met it's intended victim, though, Gleason was in motion. He slammed the butt of his rifle cross-face on the man. It stumbled him, for the briefest of seconds, his shields flaring for a moment. The gun's barrel glowed a sickening blue color as it pulsed, the overcharge shot firing straight into Ra's chest. It wasn't meant to kill him, just stop him; the high concentration of the plasma created an electromagnetic-pulse that shot through the rest of the suit, and likely into the wearer beneath it. The man jerked for a few moments as electricity surged through his body, before collapsing, a faint hint of smoke coming from his suit's cooling system as it tried to maintain the situation.

Gleason, with the help of the surviving marine, dragged him by the collar and threw him in the rear of the hold. If they were going to die, the man was going to be sure that that sorry sack of meat was going to as well.

"Be honest with me, Frank" Lieutenant Voree said softly, breaking rank for a moment. The Marine Commander slid his helmet off, scratching the thick, brown stubble on his head and face. He sighed and shook his head, replacing his helmet and flicking the tinted visor off.

"I say we bring the fight to 'em, ma'am." It didn't need to be spoken that they were very likely not to make it, Voree knew that. With the gunship floating above, and the air support gone, they were Captain Kaivori's last link to the ground. And when they went out--

A thought flashed through the Lieutenant's head. She looked at Frank and the remaining marines. A few of them were on the younger side. The one who didn't have his helmet with him anymore was scared, she could tell. But they were still her Marines. She looked slowly at Frank, who looked back at her. "Ma'am, what're you-"

"Commander, I can't make you follow me...but I know that you and I have a similar thought process with what the good Captain is doing." Without so much as another word, the Lieutenant slowly walked out of the dropship, her pistol held above her head. The Commander and the marines simply stood there, dumbstruck, watching as she walked out into the dim evening light and eventually stood in front of the dropship. The grav boosters blew her hair around her face wildly, but she stared up at the ship, unblinking. She didn't turn as she heard bootprints in sand, like muffled stomps. Four marines in Federation Battle Armor slowly joined her, holding their rifles above their heads. The Commander was dragging Blake behind him, eventually standing next to the Lieutenant. There was silence for a few moments, the only sound coming from the gunship as it simply stood there, before Frank stepped forward, lifting Blake slightly from the collar in a not-so-gentle manner.

" 'Scuse me...this belong to you?"

"The lives of your comrades, that's what." Travis responded, pulling back up above the sand to the safety of the air.

"Kaviori and his men apparently might be of dissenting opinions. So, therefore, we look to take advantage of that fact. The friend of our enemy might actually be the enemy of the enemy; assuming they're smart enough to realize they're being used."

And for a moment, Travis nodded at the Chozo. "Thank you, by the way... for trying to save her. We at least tried."

"'Scuse me, this belong to you?" The conversation was interrupted when a holoscreen appeared on the cockpit, the image of a man in armor standing fearlessly before the Arctic Storm. He had something... no, someone in his arms. Why did this one look so-

"Hey, that's Ra...." Travis muttered under his breath, staring back at the marines. These men were probably scared stiff right now; he couldn't blame them.

After a few tense moments of thought, there was a reply.

["Yeah, he's ours. Set him down. Anyone else?"]

((Actually, DA, it's Blake, not Ra. And before we jump too far ahead, I need to edit my post a bit, because I got completely back-asswards with Blake's character.))

Essentially Blake is in control of Ra's body.))

Z'Gato gestured dismissively. "If our enemies bicker amongst themselves, we should be striking at them now rather than consolidating," He said, obviously annoyed, but he sighed anyway. The Chozo did not speak a response to Travis when the man mentioned the death of Jenosa, but rather merely made the dismissive gesture again. At that time, their conversation was interrupted by a transmission from an armored man holding up a hostage. Z'Gato said nothing, letting Travis take care of the talking.

["I'm gonna take him now, but all I ask is that you don't shoot."]

The Arctic Storm began to lower just enough to the point where it would be safe for Travis to jump down from a safe enough height and get back up if needed. Slowly, the hatch on the upper side of the ship sprang open, and out of it a dark shadow clad in armor arose in the night. Travis jumped down into the sand, kicking up a bit of a cloud behind him as he landed roughly in front of the marines.

"Have your men lower their weapons and set him down; gently."

Taking a moment, he patched through to that mysterious AI.

["Listen, you may be onto something... these men are scared for their lives, I think you might be right in saying there's... uh... interests that we discussed at play."]

He looked back up at the group, watching to see what their reaction would be; he didn't want to have to kill all these men, but if they fired on him, he would probably have no choice...
