I just _____ in the _____.

The night was bitter and cold in the small town known as Pascal. Frost grew lightly on the grass, pools of water closed off with but the thinnest stretch of ice. Winter was just beginning to wrap its gentle, white cloak over everything as a small dusting of snow.

Lord Romain Antonin looked down on the young man’s mauled body, his glazed over eyes still wide with shock. Snow melted against the still warm blood. Romain shook his head slowly, pulled his heavy cloak closer to him for warmth, and left to alert the authorities.

~

“People of Pascal!” the elder cried to the villagers the next morning, his breath coming out in a puff of fog. The villagers halted their goings-on and looked at him, curious about the newcomer in the cloak beside their elder.

“One of our own has been murdered!” There was a murmur of surprise amongst everyone and the elder let it go on for several minutes before continuing. “A body was found last night by a traveler who’s been staying here. Lord Antonin, please explain further.”

Romain tightened the gloves on his hands. Hearing the leather creak gave him the resolve to speak to the crowd. “What you have here is a supernatural attack, a creature of unnatural origin. I have seen other signs as well, you, farmer, have you not lost some of your sheep?”

The man jumped, realizing he was being singled out, “Y-yes sir. Two dozen o’ dem since the last moon, sir. Thought they was caused by wolves.”

“You’re close, but I believe we may actually have a problem of werewolves on our hands. The tracks in the snow near your grazing pastures are too inconsistent in size and shape. I do believe that I came close to a den of werewolves in coming here. However,” he held up a hand for silence before the murmur could begin again, “They could simply be curious as to what’s going on. In reality, it could be witches, or even fairies living in your forest and causing harm to your village.

The elder barked out a harsh laugh, “I am not unfamiliar with the fae in our stretch of forest. I once loved such a creature in my younger days. She, however, betrayed me. She decided to grant me a wish for my heartache. I wished never to see her again so she simply plucked out my eyes and ate them.” He stroked a finger over a silk bandage tied across his eyes.

Romain felt a moment’s pity for the elder. The fairy having taken him for a fool twice. He then turned back to the villagers. “Fair people of Pascal, I propose we take the fight to whoever has done this misdeed, before any other evil can happen again. I want a small party of strong people to come with me into the Forest of Sorrow. There we will track them down and end them!”

There was a chorus of excitement.

Drunnis had been in the small town of Pascal for a good month when Lord Antonin showed up in the town square. He'd been sleeping in the foundations of a ruined house, emerging at evening to do some begging, and then prowling the town during the night. To avoid attracting suspicion he would feed on people from the nearby farms instead of the townspeople. He'd been hiding the bodies in the nearby forest, but even if they were found there would be no sign of vampiric activity. It would simply look like they had been murdered with slashed throats.

The morning after a man was found murdered in the town, Drunnis was begging in the town square. He had decided to risk coming out during the day as it was a particulary dark and cloudy day. He sat in a dark alcove, his hood firmly up with his gloved hands out infront of him. The pickings were slim and he was just about to call it a day when the town elder called for everyone's attention. Drunnis gasped in shock when the elder declared that someone had been murdered, scared that he'd been found out. He breathed a sigh of relief however when the man in the cloak said it was a supernatural attack.

---

"I want a small party of strong people to come with me into the Forest of Sorrow. There we will track them down and end them!”

Drunnis was pushing through the crowd, determined to be among the group that left. His hand was out infront of him, keeping his hood firmly pulled down. The last thing he needed was it to fall down and his flesh to start burning right infront of a hunter of the supernatural. Drunnis knew that he'd be found out sooner or later if he didn't do anything. The group were going to go into the forest, and there was a small chance they'd find the bodies. Drunnis had been hiding them all over the place in there, and the earliest ones could probably be smelled from a mile off. He had two options concerning the situation. Run from the town of Pascal, and have suspicion cast on him (Which would probably be enough for an overzealous vampire hunter), or go with them into the forest... and kill them all. He'd hide the bodies well, and go to a different town. They'd think him dead in Pascal, and who'd care about a missing beggar? They'd probably have forgotten him within a week.

Atlast, he was through the crowd to the lord. Not many people had joined his group to go hunting, but there were many people round the side with hesitant looks on their faces. The lord turned to face him. Drunnis bowed his head.
"I'll join! Drunnith Dan Ruivth ath your thervith!"

Listening with keen senses from the forest edge was a man perched on a thick limb of an ancient tree, frowning from the commotion. As he listened, he heard that someone had been murdered in the town. He shook his head, regretting that someone's life had been ended prematurely. It was when there was talk of the kill being supernatural that he raised a brow and began paying close attention.

“Fair people of Pascal, I propose we take the fight to whoever has done this misdeed, before any other evil can happen again. I want a small party of strong people to come with me into the Forest of Sorrow. There we will track them down and end them!”

The man's massive hands gripped the limb tightly, breaking away bark and crushing parts of the old wood as he growled.

"Evil? You think we shifters are evil, eh?" He slid from the branch. "It is not evil to be turned, only malcircumstance! You think I wanted this, fools?!" He pointed to the town, as if they could be listening. "You come with your torches and silver but we will not be driven out so easily! Come, you stupid humans, for Medvedev stands to protect his territory, and he will tear you apart!" The man now known as Medvedev threw his head back, summoning an inhuman, brutal roar from his lungs that surely echoed out to the town. He growled as he took a deep breath, turning from his view of Pascal and trudging into the thick of the forest, the thick gray fur on his arms bristling as a small breeze blew by.

Surely other shapeshifters had heard the commotion by now, as well.

Alderin was walking along the streets of pascal, and found him self near the town square when a man who had the smell of disgusting mold on his hat, and a cheap whiskey on him started talking. Alderin walked over, and heard the mean talking about a supernatural death.

“No one ever thinks to put a body away properly”, Alderin, thought to himself. That’s about the time when his airs picked up, and he heard what sounded like rant from something far away on the woods.

Alderin walked away slowly making sure his hood was up, and begin to make his way to the woods. When he reached the outskirt of them he decided maybe to investigate in order to see if could find the creature, or were creature, and warn them about mob.

Alderin jumped onto a tree, and started running, and jumping from tree to tree. After a while he saw a man trudging through the forest. The man appeared to be huge, and had massive hands to go along with his incredible size.

Alderin started following the man waiting to see if he might something to do with the murder, but in his focus on the man he step on an old branch that was rotted from years of decay. Alderin fell, but still managed to keep to his feet, and quickly made a dash for a nearby berry bush hoping the man didn’t notice…

Medvedev stopped when the branch broke, his fists tensing as he remained perfectly still, listening as the branch-breaker darted into a nearby bush. He whipped around quickly, trodding over to the bush and spreading it open.

"I see the mob moves quickly. Come to kill me, whelp?"

The Forest of Sorrow was aptly named. When the huge trees were nothing more than saplings a war of the fairies broke out, many of the creatures died, their immortal blood seeping into the young ground. Because of this, the land was laden with magic, overly so in some aspects.

The trees grew tall and thick, their leaves casting green shadows by day, and seeming to glow faintly at night. Sounds could always be heard, strange, keening wails of things not meant to walk the mortal world.

Magical creatures, vampires, werewolves, witches, and especially fey were drawn to the ancient woods. Its alien strangeness reflecting their own, warped nature.

Most denizens of the Forest of Sorrow left Pascal to itself. The small town of humans often did the same in return. A fragile truce building over the years.

One that was now on the verge of breaking.

Romain looked down at Drunnis with clear disgust written all over his face. His hood was the only thing keeping the people of the city from seeing it.

"Very well, Drunnith," he said mockingly, low enough for only the beggar to hear, "let us hope you can hunt better than you can talk."

He heard a chorus of worriedness from the crowd and looked up to see one of the werecreatures.

"Do not let that filthy disgusting thing threaten you! It is likely the one who caused this terrible murder. It has no morals, no conscience, it has nothing but a taste for flesh. Come, anyone else who would be proud to defend their city, come forth."

Six local villagers came forth, with Drunnis and Lord Romain himself, which made eight.

"Very well, we shall hunt at sundown, when they are not hiding like cowards in their dens and homes. We shall start with the den of werewolves that have been killing the animals, hopefully it will draw out that other shapeshifter again and we can take him down as well. Again, you have until sundown to prepare."

With that, Romain stepped into the tavern and upstairs to his bedroom, waiting for sundown when we would get his chance.

"No i have not come to kill any were creature, and the from the sound of it that could be you. they are coming, and with an obsessed shape shifting killer." Alderin quickly blurted out when the giant opened the bushes on him.

" We need to find a spot to hide, for i might not be safe either." Aldrin said as he started to regain his composure, and stepped out of the bush.

Medvedev gently helped the man out of the bush, intrigued. "And what manner of individual are you to help a 'were-creature' such as myself, I wonder?" He questioned with a laugh. "No matter."

Gracefully, the gargantuan man reached up, grabbed a limb that was in reach, and easily lifted himself up onto it before standing upon the sturdy branch. "Follow. We shall find a place to wait out their assault." With a cackle, he jumped from the branch to another, somehow not breaking it or the following ones with his mass as he descended into the forest's darkness.

"Very well M'lord! I thall thee you lather when the hunth beginth!" Drunnis called after Romain, barely able to contain his anger.

The nerve! To mock Drunnis Dan Ruiz? He sighed, thinking of a time his name was worth something, long ago. How long had he been going without riches? How long had he been living in the gutters of pathetic little towns? How much longer would he have to? Immortality was his only consolation. At least he'd be able to beg his way to riches eventually.

He walked through Pascal, back towards the abandoned house. He closed the splintered door behind him, and walked into the one other room with a door. He pulled up the floor boards in the right corner, and lowered himself into the dank underbelly of the house. He emptied his pockets of what little money he had into his small bag. He took off his scarf and eye patch, made a pillow from his jacket, and lay there in the darkness, thinking out his plan.

Alderin jumped onto the branch behind the large man, and started following him. "where is this hide out, and if you must know if they find you they will probably find me.....I'm a vampire. which would explain the hood always up." Alderin said just barely dodging a sun beam.

Alderin kept thinking though. What is the story behind this man. he seems to live in a forest, and yet has great manner, yet is a were creature. Alderin thought following the man jumping from branch to branch just barely able to keep up...
