“The captain is a real bastard as well. I hear he’s a veteran from some old war… And he doesn’t believe in God!”

"How very nice for him," Cottonmouth muttered, though his sentiment didn't really have any particular meaning. It seemed odd to him that this creature would think that Terran deities were at all relevant to a Zebesian Pirate. However, Dirk had provided him with with some useful information. With that to go on, it would be a small matter for Aiko to get the Free Vulture's last known coordinates from the pod's nav system, and then the crew could go on a real raid.

"So... the Free Vulture..." Cottonmouth said, to no one in particular. "You've managed to be useful after all. It doesn't matter if they don't have any cargo. We'll take their weapons, their food, their supplies. In fact, we may just take their ship itself as our prize." He nodded at Scragg. "Take him away."

"Aye aye, Captain," Scragg replied. "Where shall I lock him up?"

At that moment, T'kran's voice came over the radio, interrupting the conversation. "You may want to come down to the airlock, Cottonmouth. Seems we've scored ourselves something far more valuable than an escape pod and a mutated terran. It's an android... and a lady, to boot."

"Find a place," Cottonmouth growled at Scragg. "Now get him out of here. The rest of you, come with me." The remaining Pirates marched with their captain over to the airlock while Scragg dragged Dirk down the corridor.

When they opened up the airlock, T'kran was there with the female android in his arms, limp like a rag doll. The signs of wear and tear were all over her, though it didn't appear that any major damage had been done. However, with no signs of life in the robot, it was essentially as Grifter had described it... little more than space junk.

"What is this?" said the captain as T'kran laid the robot on the gound.

"Some human's pleasure droid!" one of the Pirates bellowed, eliciting laughs from the rest of the crew. Though when their captain gave them a look, the laughter stopped.

"We'll see if Grifter and Aiko can get this thing working again," Cottonmouth said. "If not, then I'm sure it will be useful for spare parts." He stooped down and grabbed the android by the shoulders. "Grab her feet," he said to one of his crew, and the two of them lifted her and set her down on a bench in the cargo bay.

The captain turned back to T'kran and his men, leaving the android to worry about at another time. "Alright, you louts," he hissed. "That was just an appetizer. The main course still awaits us. The Free Vulture can't be far from here, so be ready."

.........................

There weren't really a whole lot of places on the Salty Dog where they could lock Dirk up. Space was tight as it was, and now with T'kran and Grace taking up bunks and Aiko down in the engine room, things were really starting to get cramped. Plus, the ship didn't have a proper brig. So Scragg decided to put him in one of the storage rooms. It had a strong door and a good lock, so he knew there would be no escaping. Not that he thought the mutant was capable of escape anyway.

"You know, we have a human female aboard," Scragg said as he shoved Dirk into the storage room. "Though I doubt she would want to mate with your filthy hide. More likely she'd cut your throat just to watch you bleed to death."

The room was little more than a walk-in closet, though there was plenty of space for Dirk to stretch out and lay down if he wanted. Of course, he'd have to sleep on the cold metal floor, though Scragg figured he was probably used to that.

"Tell me, Abomination. Do you really think that your god will save you?"

.........................

Grifter watched the flash of light in the distance, and recognized it for what it was. A large fleet had just jumped into the system, he assumed it was the Galactic Federation. Fortunately, they were a far enough away that the Pirates could quite easily avoid them. And even if they did take notice, they could stay out of trouble simply by being small and unobtrusive. That was why they sailed in a human-built cargo vessel.

A beeping noise drew his attention to the console. Someone was trying to make contact with him. A gunship, it appeared. And where there was a lone gunship, there was generally a bounty hunter or two. Grifter decided to respond.

"You shouldn't expose yourself like that!" he growled, the Pirate's face splashing all over Couries' monitors in all its frightening glory. He then abruptly terminated the link. Nothing more needed to be said... the message was loud and clear.

But Grifter also had his orders to deal with, and right now his orders were to look for the Free Vulture. Once they had the coordinates, it would be easier, but that didn't mean he couldn't start the search. Still, if he happened to pass by this little punk on the way, or if said punk persisted, then Grifter would teach him a lesson he wouldn't soon forget.

Assuming he survived it, that is.

Ryan genuinely panicked from Serlas's and Pansy's reaction, yelping in fright and withdrawing the condensed energy, causing it to dematerialize. It was merely an extension of himself, really, and it was kind of like having an extra 'limb;' although in truth, the energy was merely a mass surrounding him that he could shape and mold at his own will.

And acting like any good frightened person, that invisible energy withdrew all around his body like a safety blanket. Tense, the air surrounding his body grew momentarily tingly, like you were touching an old, active computer screen; every 'living' energy particle that flowed around him had come closer to one another, ready at a given moment to shield him.

He gave off a sigh of relief, however, when the admiral laughed and waved the two to put away any cautious worry; although it was obvious that he was left quite shaken. He felt the potential energy of the Pansy’s weapon point away from him, as if his skin was inside the weapon itself.

"Th-thank you," he said in a grateful tone. For some reason, that laughter of her, perhaps combined with her position, reminded him of his mother. "You can trust me. Don't worry; I rather not startle anyone."

Cautiously following Pansy (A name he could easily remember because he associated the word 'Pansies' or 'Pansy' with the phrase "Scardey cat;" or a person who peed his pants when frightened. Although he doubted this guy was anything but one.). He relaxed more when they were outside with his companion, Stynos, but gulped at when he was given the first assignment.

Ryan had never been in a Vac suit before...

____________

Oddly, it was Ryan's first also being in space; or more specifically, in a zero gravity environment.

And he was loving it.

Even though he wasn't familiar with the thruster controls of the suit, and he could have just magnetic boots he was too clumsy, his energy surrounding him provide all the mobility he needed. His energy naturally surrounded him in a floating state, and even when condense, it created a potent EM field to which it could float and move about. However, his entire life had been gravity bound, and gravity had always kept from trying to float his physical body.

Then again, the entire idea of 'flight' had barely entered his mind up until now. Granted, it took him a small moment to orientate the float of electrons around his body to produce the EM field he wanted, but once in space, it all seemed to click like an instinct; as if he had actually been through this a million times, minus the thrill and sensation.

Some of the crew men near the side windows of the ship caught themselves momentarily pulled away from their current activity to flying through space without any thrusters active. It was even stranger when they saw him spinning his body when floating to the target.

None, however, barely noticed Stynos; and those that did merely heard the clanging sound of metal against metal. Stynos's mechanical 'shell' had come equipped with the ability to produce magnetic field under his feet; and he and Ryan were both their joys with one another. Stynos didn't know the very sensation of 'exhilaration' up until now; but Ryan's connection with him seemed to fill that gap.

Their ride ended with satisfaction when they reached the target, which upon closer inspection, and to Ryan's utter surprise, was an android. All it took was being near it, and he could sense the potential amount of electricity in it - the amount of electricity that could be in use but wasn't. He snapped the comms. open and replied to whoever he was supposed to talk to, "This is Ryan, and I have to ask, is it common to find inert, humanoid androids floating space? Because that's what I have here with me."

Aiko's voice chirped into T'kran's earpiece as he re-entered the Salty Dog, the Pirate a little too distracted by his fellow Pirates' reactions to the android. "Don't pull it apart unless you're certain it's unfixable. I imagine she's a lot more valuable to us in one piece... and I don't just mean money." Indeed, there was no telling what information the android had stored in her brain. Perhaps it would lead them to something even better.

Once he was able to respond, he opened a comm with Aiko. "I found a busted android tangled up in the sensors. They should be working fine now. If you want to take a look at our catch, it's down in the cargo bay."

Little did the rest of the crew know, but T'kran was currently aware of all the goings-on within the Salty Dog. In order to make controlling his old ship simpler, he had installed a wireless interface function in his armour. And it had retained that function. After a few compatibility issues and bypassed firewalls, he had managed to connect to the ship's systems.

"It's about time we found a real prize. Hopefully the ship that freak came from will at least have something in working condition." T'kran had been spoilt rotten as far as technology was concerned, and he shared his kind's lust for knowledge and development... as well as their greed. He was growing a little tired of sifting through space junk.

And then, his memory kicked into gear. He had seen something odd while he was out on the hull of the ship. "Cottonmouth," he began, turning to the captain of the ship. "I saw something while I was outside. A flash, must have been a few thousand kilometres away from us, but whatever it was, it was big. It's probably coincidence, but I think this sector's getting a little crowded."

"You shouldn't expose yourself like that!" Was heard when a creature appeared on the monitors, and then quickly blinked out.
"at least we know there friendly.", coriues said to Wiz sarcastically.
"um, sir i think another ship just entered the system." Wiz said worried. Coriues looked at the radar that indicated that a fairly well sized ship had jumped into the system.
"Wiz i have an idea. If our friends from the ship the salty dog don't want to talk, Then we can at least hide be hind them while what looks to be a deadly ship comes around. So in other words, I want you to takes us down behind the Salty dog, and find a nice little nook were this ship will fit." Coriues said as he began to fly the ship near the salty dog hoping to be unnoticed, and find a spot under it.
"alright sir." Wiz merely said.
"Wiz since the salty do already knows were here if they don't know i want you to set up a transmission, and tell them at least that a new ship has arrived.", Coriues ordered.

"Mr Tran, see if you can raise our contact in this system, please hail Rear Admiral Felecia Calderon, my orders said we could reach her aboard the GFS Sentinel. However, I'd like you to send out a systemitized hail to any and all ships. Use the wideband."

"Aye sir," Tran said as he keyed up his station, then began speaking into his headset, "Attention, attention, this is the UEO Venture, hailing Rear Admiral Felecia Calderon. Please respond. I say again, UEO Venture Hailing Rear Admiral Felecia Calderon, please respond."

The bridge was silent as the crew waited to see if there would be a response, after a moment Tran piped up, "Sir, we're receiving a response."

"Let's here it Tran," Brahms said.

“Captain Brahms? This is Admiral Calderon. We will be jumping to the Blight system as soon as Commander-General Haredni returns.” the Admiral said to him.

"Thank you Admiral, I would like to offer all the help my ship has to offer. I would like it if you, or one of your officers could brief me and my AI on what kinds of preparations we need to undertake before the jump." he said over what he hoped was still an open commlink. He waited patiently for any response in silence.

Ten Hours Earlier

Captain Brahms sat in the officer's mess eating his lunch in between his shifts. The holopad on his watch clicked on with a hum. A second later, Natalie, the ship's AI appeared on the table next to his plate. "What is it Nat?" he asked her.

"Captain, I just wanted to let you know that our jump preparations are nearly ready. I handled most of the computations myself instead of running them through the NavCOM, so it went significantly faster. I also wanted to inform you that Nicole has transmitted a calendar from home, she made it herself with some help from a friend, I've saved it to the terminal in your quarters." she said to him quietly, "Also, I think I should tell you that no one saw the calendar pictures except myself, the transmission came in while Lt. Tran was away from his station checking on the intercoms in an other area of the ship."

Brahms smiled warmly at Natalie, "Thank you Natalie, that will be all."

She nodded and blinked off as the humming from his watch ceased, he returned his attention to his lunch.

Roffel House!

Aiko had gone back to her digging when T’kran’s voice drifted down from the HUD over her bed. She tilted her head so her left ear could hear him better.

"I found a busted android tangled up in the sensors. They should be working fine now. If you want to take a look at our catch, it's down in the cargo bay,” T’kran said. Aiko was pretty surprised and it showed in her expression.

“I may just do that. May be a better haul than the presidential suite I’ve got here,” she said, lightly tapping one of the many boxes with her left foot. It was amazing how much stuff the Feds could actually fit in an escape pod, and considering how cramped the gear was in the pod, outside of their appropriate housing the equipment took up a considerable amount of room. One of Aiko’s biggest pet peeves was a cramped engine room, and she was sure one of the reasons Grifter had Ravage bring the boxes to her humble bunkroom was because he knew she’d have the mess tidied before the next op.

The presence of an android on board was tantalizing enough, however, for Aiko to leave her piles of new toys and seek it out. Androids didn’t just grow on trees, and the chances of actually hitting one in open space was probably as close as asymptotic to zero as even Adam could calculate.

The cargo bay was as spic and span as ever. Cottonmouth was almost as fanatic about keeping things neat and tidy as Aiko was, especially in key areas. Everything was lashed down and secured properly, even the new escape pod husk a few pirates were still disassembling. The center of the comparatively large room was empty, although there was a latch on the floor that held a recessed crane that handled the heavier items. Having some empty space was essential on a pirate ship, since raiders had to gather someplace before boarding a ship.

The android was also fastened down, but at the opposite end of the bay from the escape pod. Considering how unique a find it was, the android had garnered fairly little attention from the pirates. Only T’kran seemed to think it was any real note, but she supposed it was only natural from a piratical sub-society that largely disagreed with body mods. Unless they could get some information out of the droid the thing was useless anyway. Aiko could tell without a second glance that the droid had definitely seen better days. Who knew how long it was floating out in space?

Aiko knew better than to hoist the android onto an examination platform by herself. Although Aiko certainly had her own strengths, physical aptitude wasn’t one of them while shoved in her human form. She had her limitations, and although the android was interesting, it was interesting enough to make her body get stronger. She could only imagine the uproar that would cause.

So, she settled for the old fashioned method. She found a scanner with an x-ray function and did some minor scans.

What she found was interesting. Instead of being a machine designed to look human on the outside, the android even looked human on the inside, with some noticeable differences however. There were no kidneys or liver, and the heart was abnormally large for an android of this size. The presence of a heart was surprising by itself, however, because it suggested the android distributed its energy not through wires and resistors, but by flowing liquid. However, when she sliced the pseudo skin of the humanoid, it didn’t bleed. In all honesty, Aiko had never seen anything like it.

She got on the comm. and keyed in Grifter. “The android may be worth something. Don’t ditch her without me getting a better look at her. I need her transferred,” Aiko scowled at the thought of how crowded her room was about to get, “to the engine room. I might be able to cobble something up to take a good look at this thing using the gear you guys just picked up.”

"Tell me, Abomination. Do you really think that your god will save you?"

Dirk attempted to smile to the pirate. His cheekbones rose slightly and the holes in his cheeks widened, revealing his rotten teeth. The effect would be found hideous by most humans, which was the effect that Dirk was hoping for with this Zebesian. He breathed out for good measure, letting his disgusting breath waft out.
“You tell me. What were the odds of my escape pod being picked up in this system? And now it looks like you lot are going to let me live” He said smugly, his hands behind his back as he attempted rock on the heels of his weighty boots.

“I guess God already saved me!” He started laughing. A wet cackle that sounded more like he was choking with rhythm.

He started scratching the tuft of hair his hat had concealed absentmindedly; taking notice of the large amount of lice that had somehow managed to prosper on his head. He realised he’d lost his hat when he’d been hauled out of the pod.

He looked up at Scragg. “Hey, could you go and get my hat? Or let me go and get it? If there’s a woman on board like you say, I’m going to need to look my best, right?”

“Scan the system,” Drakershra ordered. “Make sure that the Looming Threat and Ranseur also do so.”

“Two ships,” Obarskyr said. “They all appear to be unaffiliated with any major faction.”

“Two ships?” Drakershra scowled. “How could there be two ships in a system as dead as a stone?”

“Not sure, to be honest,” Obarskyr said.

There was a small beep and Kaalik’s face, many times larger than life, filled the wall-sized screen in front of Drakershra. “We’ve got two ships here.”

“Yes, I know,” Drakershra said. He was annoyed. The Xorian hadn’t been expecting company, and the presence of even one ship was enough to cause problems.

“Shall we leave them?” Kaalik said.

“No witnesses.” Drakershra’s tail twitched.

“It’s just two ships, Drakershra,” Kaalik said.

“Even one is enough to betray our presence here. They must be removed from the scene.”

“Perhaps they could assist us.”

Drakershra looked to Obarskyr and Verasor. Obarskyr simply shrugged, but Verasor nodded eagerly.

“All right, then.” Drakershra met Kaalik’s gaze again. “Ping them with your flags.” He looked to the Xorians in the room. “This goes for everyone in our fleet. Also send the fleet-wide order to launch all escort ships. If either of the two ships tries to escape, eradicate them. Let no life pods escape your sight.”

--

The hangar decks on both Xorian carriers were alive with activity. The order to mobilize the fighters and corvettes had been delivered swiftly, and all of the Xorians were already itching to get in their respective ships and launch. Bit by bit, the various wings of fighters and the individual corvettes exited the hangar bays.

On the frigates, there were also fighters being launched, albeit significantly fewer. The area around the fleet was soon alive with activity, with fighters and corvettes testing their engines and thrusters. They were ready for anything.

The IFF scanners on the other ships in the system went haywire. Where there were once sixteen ships, there were now well over five hundred unique IFF signatures, all broadcasting pirate flags loud and clear.

--

“Be sure to run a systems check, just to be safe,” Felecia said to Tobias. “You’ll need to make sure that everything’s working correctly for when we get to Blight. Other than that, I wouldn’t say there’s anything you need to do right now. This is just a small expedition.”

The expedition was small. Aside from the GFS Sentinel, there would only be a few other ships. Commander Serlas was to remain behind in his Peacekeeper until he was called. The only other capital ship in the fleet would be the Venture, and Katok was going to bring a small force of two Garling assault frigates, four Garling light frigates and eight Garling patrol combatants, better known as PatComs by the Garling fleets.

“Say what?” Sergeant Pansy said to Ryan. “You found an android on the surface of the ship? Well, bring it in! We need to see what it is! I’m sure your ‘friend’ can help you with that. Let me go tell the Admiral.”

(OOC: Doing a quickie post, partially because I'm hoping to get someone else to interact with *winks at Arx*)

"R-Roger," Ryan replied, and then added, "My friend's name is Stynos," wanting to make sure Stynos was given some proper identification; and not just looked like another mindless robot.

He took another puzzling, curious look at the android, wondering what had happened to it and how it had gotten into space. It was sure beat up, that was for certain; for a moment, he wanted to prod it to see if it would come to life. He thought better and decided to let Stynos handle it.

Still, as they were getting back to the air lock, Ryan could get a better detail of the androids potential energy. Unlike most androids that he had come across, which the possible flow felt 'blocky,' linear and organize, the circuitry in this had a certain 'fines' to it; like it actually followed a similar structure to that of a biological creature.

This gave the android's energy signature a unique sense to Ryan, for he knew there was something mechanical about it that him it was an android; yet the 'structure' of this mechanical system - the way the electron flow was organized and everything - followed very closely to that of a biological creature's.

It was indeed something that piquet Ryan's interested quite a bit, for he had never come across such an entity before. Following Pansy's orders, he entered the ship and went to the place that he was specified to wait at. During then, his curiosity got the better of him...and Stynos began curiously inspecting the android, turning it over and checking every bit of its body in its largely, burly hands that almost entirely encompassed it. Ryan's own intrigue flowed into Stynos through their innate emphatic connection, and seeing through Stynos's eyes was, for the moment, enough to satisfy it.

“Hey, could you go and get my hat? Or let me go and get it? If there’s a woman on board like you say, I’m going to need to look my best, right?”

Scragg sneered at the mutant. "I don't think so," he said. "My brother Ravage got ahold of it. He rather likes it, so good luck taking it from him!" The pirate slammed the door and secured the lock, leaving Dirk alone in the storage room.

...........................

Three hours later

...........................

It took a considerable amount of time to get everything in the engine room squared away, but they finally managed to clear a space to lay the android. In addition, Grifter had brought what medical scanners he had from the infirmary, which wasn't much. But it would service until Aiko was able to rig up something better.

It really was a fascinating piece of equipment. Grifter had certainly never seen anything quite like it. In his experience, Terran androids generally came in two categories. The first were essentially machines with skin. Simple, basic. The second variety were more artificial persons than robots. More than just skin, they had working organic bodies. They ate, slept, breathed, and bled, with cybernetic nervous systems and often augmented or artificial bones and muscles. This android seemed to be something different, like a transitional design between the two.

Many races in the galaxy viewed humans as having primitive technology. It was a prejudice that was based primarily on their continued use of projectile weapons, and the fact that they were still just getting the hang of jump engines. However, in other respects humans were often actually more advanced than so-called "superior" races. This android was one prime example; indeed, humans made some of the best robots around, and pretty much had the market cornered on artificial intelligence.

"Have you seen anything to indicate that it might still be operational?" Grifter asked Aiko.

...........................

That fleet was getting closer.

Cottonmouth stood on alone on the bridge, watching the radar screens. The fleet was still too far away to register as anything but a blip, but it was clear that the blip was something big. Their presence alone in a supposedly lifeless system was enough to be a cause for concern. But his worries only increased as they came close enough for the Dog to start picking up their signals.

The ships were still just barely within range, so what was coming through was mostly just static. Once he got to examining the signal closer, however, Cottonmouth realized that it was a pirate flag.

That was a problem. Pirate flags meant High Command loyalists, or in other words, the other ninety percent of the Pirate species. And Cottonmouth wasn't in the mood to butt heads with High Command right now. Things wouldn't necessarily get violent, but nor would it be particularly diplomatic. The best thing to do was to just leave the system and avoid confrontation altogether.

After a few calculations based on their own trajectory and that of the fleet, the captain punched his course correction in to the nav computer. This new course would actually take them deeper into the system as it took them away from the fleet. It would be a while before the fleet disappeared from view, so until then they'd still have to do their best to remain small. Act like they were just minding their own business.

Just let us be, he thought to himself, still unaware who exactly this was.

...........................

The sounds of metal scraping on metal could be heard inside the storage room where Dirk was locked up. It was a very creepy sound, if one didn't know where it was coming from. Even once the source of the scraping was understood to be the door, that would be no small comfort knowing that someone was trying to get in.

The door opened, and before Dirk would be able to see what was happening, he found himself flung up against the wall, a blade once again held against his throat.

The sight of the deformed creature startled Grace, and she moved on nerves, whipping out her knife and pinning the perceived threat. It was pure reaction, no conscious thought involved.

"You must be the freak," she said once she regained her senses, breathing heavily as her sudden explosion took more out of her than she had expected. She let Dirk out of her grip and put away her knife. "Cap'n told me to watch out for you."

The gray-eyed girl looked a bit worse for the wear, dressed in a black tank top and old ripped jeans. Her tattoos, usually covered up by one heavy jacket or another, were clearly visible, particularly the red serpentine dragon on her upper right arm. Despite her ragged appearance, to Dirk she probably looked like Helen of Troy.

She climbed up on one of the shelves, straining all the way. It wasn't something she would've had difficulty with if she was at full health. For one brief moment, it looked like she would take a tumble, but somehow she managed to keep her balance and climb back down when she found what she wanted. A bottle.

It was a potent spirit made from some kind of alien grain based on Ravage and Scragg's recipe, but it was basically moonshine. She took a swig, and felt the liquid fire sear her throat.

"Wanna nip?" she asked Dirk, offering him the bottle. "It's pretty harsh. Cap'n keeps the good stuff in his quarters."
