If you're a returning member, no, your account has not been deleted, we've actually changed board since you were last here. just go ahead and register, PM one of the staff, let us know you're here, and we'll get right to work converting your information and post count from the old board.

Keep in mind that any RPs running on the old site are probably still there, so if you don't see them here, just check the 'Home' Page, and follow the link back to the old board.

I just _____ in the _____.

(I’m not done with these yet, but oh yeah, looks like I’ve got some steam for this entry! (good steam, the kind that cooks delicious food, not the kind that burns you))

So many people get their panties in a bunch because someone did something. I don’t know why, but someone makes a totally innocent post with just a snippet of something someone didn’t like. Then OOC’s are made and, before you know it, PMs are being exchanged and people are slicing and dicing their posts to make someone happy when there was really nothing wrong in the first place.

Unless someone did something so totally outrageous that it permanently affects the long term plot of the RP, it’s best to leave it be. Godmodding has become a fear, nay, a phobia among many of our members, that we just piddle along with our writing and hope we don’t yet yelled/PMed at.

This leaves the RP looking watered down, with just the RP-creator making anything of value, trying their best to inject the story with some…well…story.

Look at some of our oldest RPs, like Forsaken. Don’t look at the craptacular writing, look at everything behind it. If you think about it, there really was no actual main storyline, a bunch of stuff just happened. But it was enough stuff to give it some storyline. Back then there wasn’t a built-up fear of ruining anything. Each one of us had a moment where we affected the storyline for everyone.

Think of RPing as driving a car. The asphalt road is your plot. When someone else makes a post, they’re planting a tree, or a road sign, or a house, or a gory smashed cat, things for you to look at as you’re driving down this unfolding scenic road.

Suddenly, someone makes a post that’s like plopping down a brick wall. You don’t know what do to so you either slam on your brakes and wait for that wall to be disassembled piece by piece, or you hit it dead on.

BLAM! Car ride, and RP, over.

Of course, there is another way…

You can always go around it. Sure, you’re going to suddenly veer off in some other direction. You saw a dirt road and decided to take that as a result of the wall. Boom blam crunch reer! You’re on a new road now, trees and signs and houses and cats are still being placed, and this road is different, it’s not what you expected but hey, it sure is interesting!

Besides you can eventually steer back onto the main road if you want to.

Don’t think of someone’s post as an obstacle, think of it as a way to build on your own work.

One example of this includes the RP The Faith. The point was to get on the big ol’ crazy guy’s ship. CEMP gave us a bit of a detour, but hey, we ended up on the ship, didn’t we? No harm done.

A smaller example is like myself describing a tavern in the water city in EP’s fantasy RP Bellum omnium contra Legion.

The tavern was actually quite nice, the whole of it all, from the tables to the floors, walls and high ceiling, was made of a beautiful honey colored wood, all carved with small images of plants and animals, polished to a reflective shine. In one corner sat an enormous waterfall style fountain make of white rock, its constant rush of water complimenting the ambiance of the usual tavern chatter. The entire place was clean and inviting, smelling of lavender and lemon.

Now, unless EP has the city planned down to the most absolute minute detail, I’m not doing anything wrong. There are a few exceptions, if you notice, the place sounds rather lavish, and there’s a chance that the water city is actually quite run down, to roll with my description, EP could always add a part in his next post about how the tavern is owned by a wealthy nobleman who always likes to overdo his buildings, then EP could follow up by more description of the tavern. Build on mine like one would set roof shingles atop one another.

I have to admit, a little thrill goes through me every time I see someone in an RP adding a little descriptive snippet like that when they’re not even running it. Only recently have I found the courage to start doing some of my own. Must be some kind of kinky writing thing of mine, I dunno.

I could literally spend hours playing here. If you really have Writer’s Block, then this is a proverbial Warhammer of Smashing +6 for it. Many of Agitha’s spells have been made from one of the many random spawners here (ouwah, I give ya three guesses as to which one…) Don’t be totally dependent on it though. This gives you something akin to a box, it’s your job to fill it with the bells and whistles though.

Ceiling Cat is watching you...
