Okay, this thread is for those of us who really WANT to buy something but know we SHOULDN'T, and therefore need second opinions of whether or not we should actually get something. I'll start. I really want to buy these leopard geckos. They fit into my breeding plans, but I'm going into the field this summer and I don't want to dump a gazillion leopard geckos into the lap of my professor's kids. Should I wait for something else to come up, or should I snatch these while they're so cheaply available? ;_; I want 'em. |

i would say aiko that you should get them if they fit into your breeding plan. so maybe you have to put them some where else for a while that is just the short run, but if they fit right into your plan they have a better long run. at least that is what i think.................. also i have a little bit of a money problem. you see if my math is correct(and most of the time it is) i will be getting 730$ in the next 8 month or 7 months i will get it on august 31st. anyway i have narrowed down to 3 choices i need help to decide because they are all so good they are: an x-box360 only 55$ to fix, will buy games, accessories, and etc.......... a desktop computer(still trying to find a cheap one) with programs and 1 jump drive just in case, add etc................... a laptop(again trying to find a cheap one) with a fan, programs, jump drive, ad etc................... help me.. the decision are to hard to make for a soon to be 13yr old........

I saw go for the desktop or the laptop. Unlike an X-Box, a computer is educational in its own right, plus you can still use it as a gaming platform. It's just a better purchase all around. You can get excellent deals on computers on www.newegg.com. I don't know if a laptop or a desktop would be better for you, but it really comes down to portability. Desktops are less likely to break or get stolen because you're not carrying them around everywhere. They're also much, much easier to upgrade! You also tend to get more processing bang for your buck, since laptop components are more expensive because they're more difficult to engineer. If you make up your mind, let me know, and I'll send my computer science major brother shopping for you. |

Right, lately I've been chatting with Aiko and her brother on getting a new computer, and while I've come to an agreement with them on some stuff, there's been some counter-arguments from my family. In particular, salvaging material or components that could be used for my new computer. My sister is puzzled as to why I can't, but the argument is that most of the components are fairly old (I think around 5-7 years maybe), so there might be compatibility issues. I don't distrust Aiko or her bro unlike my family, but I do like to throw caution to the wind for whatever polite but human reason (Like making a mistake or not knowing something). So I'm hoping to get a few extra opinions here in what points are actually valid. I do believe Aiko and her bro because tech is always constantly changing, and I've learned enough that there can be compatibility issues. I do want some extra opinions just in case. |

CEMP, you cannot be in better hands with your computer, and anyone who tells you that you can salvage parts off a six or seven year old machine is an idiot. Your processor can't be salvaged because they're probably completely different socket types, your power supply will cough up a lung and die on the spot, because computers draw a couple of times more power nowadays. Your hard drives are old, and have very little space on them when compared to today's monstrosities, and current generation programs and software in general take full advantage of the available space, so saving them is a bust. Same goes for RAM, because it's long since been obsolete, along with any kind of video technology from that era. The motherboard itself is the base of the whole PC, and upgrades will not function without a compatible motherboard. To put it simply, you will be throwing away more money than you would save by salvaging parts because they will limit the rest of your PC, and you will have wasted money on parts that cannot do what they were built to do, because not all of the computer can keep up with them. |

I know you're looking for outside opinions, but it often costs more money trying to find old technology that will be compatible with any parts you might think you can salvage than actually buying all brand new parts, especially when it comes down to hunting motherboards. Also, if your parents want references for Jake, he's got them. EP's one of them though, and keep in mind Jake helped EP with his computer before we met in real life, so Jake's trustworthy. He can also send a resume if they want. It's up to you. We're accountable. |

LIES About the only thing you can salvage is your hard drives. However, if you're going to do that, you might need an IDE RAID card which costs about $15-$20. I use my 40G and 80G hard drives from my old system as extra storage space for videos, music, images, and so on. I do NOT use them for installed programs. This is to give my boot drive (the main C:\ drive) the freedom and room it needs for the programs and the OS. The rest EP and Aiko are right about. The rest of the PC is almost worthless. There are minor little parts you could scrounge out of the old system, but unless you are certain about what parts you will need out of that old system, you may as well forget it. The HDs are about the only thing worth saving. |

Actually, there's been a small misunderstanding It seems that while my sister did suggest the salvaging part, she does understand that tech ages; it was the price that I told her that sound ludicrous. It was about around 1k for all the parts I wanted, and that's what boggled her; I forgot to mention the canadian taxing that we got from Newegg. So having explained that now, the good news is that we're scouring Laval and all of Montreal for the places that'll sell the parts that I need. Plus, I'll be getting some help here. Also, Microbytes probably doesn't show everything it has on stock online. Hence, I'll be going there in person to ask some questions. Edited by CEMP, Jun 5 2009, 07:08 PM.
