That's really your choice, are you going to be using him for fantasy RPs, or Random ones?

I have been thinking about a modern fantasy Random RP involving vamps, werewolves, and the like, but right now it's more of a twinkle in my eye rather than a fully thought out plan.

Thats funny B, we were just talking about a modern fantasy RP and how amusing it would be.

I am a vampire fanatic, I love the whole setting lycanthrops and vampires are teh awesome.

Not to sound too restrictive fox but if you did make a vampire I would ask that you work with me on it. I'm very picky about vampires as they can easily and quickly become some of the WORST characters out there.

I have a character based around vampire lore that I have done some tinkering with over the years and RPed with a lot of vampires so.... That is why I am picky.

In regard to this vampire and lycanthrope idea your speaking off... Is it based around the World of Darkness lore, or the general kind? (guy gets bitten by vamp/werewolf. Guy gets turned into vamp/werewolf.)

No, it will be based on the Twilight book series by Stephanie Meyer. All vampires are required to sparkle at all times, werewolves have to be whiny, all characters in general will be vacuous, and the plot will be vapid.

Hahaha, I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.

Back to all seriousness (wait that doesn't exist on this board) I think we could throw some other stuff into the mix. Witches, demons, we could even pull off fairies if we work it right (oh how I wish someone was as well versed with the Dresden Files series as I was... :p )

Ya know, Supernatural has an interesting Bestiary. It has witches and demons and all that lot. I just don't like their vamps.
Underworld was really my favorite depiction of vampires I have seen to date.

I would love to work with/be the idea bouncer for this RP if it ever did get off the ground.

That being said, I have a rather strict view on what I think about vampires. Fox, I'm evlolving (yes EP, evlolving) your thread into a discussion about vampires. I want to be fair and not impose my rather strict view on the subject.

So, what are your views on vampires. Weaknesses, Strengths, Mannerisms, Government, Myths, blah blah blah

If you'd like Darthy, I could post some info about the vampires of the Harry Dresden series, there are three kinds, each with their own specialty and needs and everything. We could possibly use that and tweak it to our own design if you're interested.

Sure, go ahead I'd be more than willing to butt in and tell you what I'm used to. Arivial (I dont know if you remember her) and I were compiling a list of legends and cross referencing fantasy settings to try and come up with a reasonable vampire. I'll see if I can dig up some of our notes.

I think when all is said and done it might be cool to play a group of vampires from the same coven or such.

Some thoughts that I ran over today.(The contents probably suffer from ADD)

By most lore vampires are not born as such. They are sired or turned.
on a child vampirism halts their growth although in some cases vampirisim would halt him/her at whenever puberty ends.

By just about every setting out there silver seriously damages vampires. This is something I am standing by
so your vampire might want to be extra careful around his own blade.

All vampires need blood to live. The closer to death they are the more
desperate they get.
Vampires usually burn to hell and back in sunlight.
In fact, all vampires have a weakness to sunlight.

Vampires ARE immortal. They never die of natural causes.

Vampires personalitys are usually VERY tied to their past unless they are at a pivotal point in their un-life.

Here is a blurb from a discussion I had a while back.

"How level headed and mature is he? This usually determines a vampires age. Vampires go through stages in life much like us.
When they are fresh they feel immortal, unstoppable and usually go around fighting, partying and living a foolish reckless lyfestyle. They think humans are cattle. Weak and worthless they usually dont get along with humans at all.

Eventually they his a stage of apathy. The world around them has changed, they dont recognize anything.
All the things they enjoyed in life that made it special are gone. Their existence feels hollow to them. They care little for themselves and at this point they usually do three tings. Sleep for many years, destroy themselves in some shape or form or they push past their vampire depression and continue on.

Now at this point most vampires if not all hold a reverence for life. They realize that it is special, it is everything they are not. Even many of the less savory vampires will cringe from destroying humanity if possible. Not to say all vampires are good, there are some rotten to the core. But from then on out there are many possibilities on what direction they take themselves. The older they become the wiser and less rash they become. Some even spend a time in hiding because they realize immortality is not invulnerability."

The part about their personality stages in life feels a bit too strict, of course, you didn't specify how much it takes up their lives, would it be enough to almost override the personality someone has for their character?

Let's say we have a very happy-go-lucky person (we're talking bubbly here folks) and they're in the stage of depression. Would they really be sad all the time? Or perhaps just some of the time like, say, when they're alone, or when they're laying in bed and it's dark, or any other time when people are more likely to be sad.

Or how about a meek librarian woman? If she gets turned I don't know that she would suddenly become a party all the time type person. She might initially try to be a 'protector of the weak' in dark alleys at first and eventually realize she can't save everyone.

I'm not saying to discard it, I actually like the idea of vampire stages, I just think that maybe it should be expanded upon and generalized in some areas. Also we might want to specify the approximate age at which they go from one stage to the other. Yes, there will be differences to as much as 100 years I would think, but it could also be like the emotional stages of death, sometimes people skip over some, sometimes they'll do them out of the typical order, things like that.

Anyway, I promised you vampires info.

Okay, in the Harry Dresden series, there are three kinds of vampires: Red Court, Black Court, and White Court. I swiped a lot of this info off a website so I didn't have to make it myself.

Red Court:

The Red Court of Vampires are less human-like than the White Court. Instead, they are slimy bat-like creatures that wear "flesh masks," sensuous and beautiful human costumes that allow them to hide in plain sight.

They are known for their seductive "Kiss". Their saliva contains a potent magical narcotic which addicts humans to their control very rapidly. The narcotic lowers the victim's inhibitions while dulling the pain of the vampire's bite. Addicted humans will go to great lengths to protect their vampiric masters.

Red Court vampires are incredibly strong and fast, and they can shake off most injuries quickly unless their bellies are cut and their blood is spilled, which will kill them. The Red Court is also vulnerable to sunlight, which burns them, and are repelled by articles of faith.

The Red Court is also capable of transforming ordinary humans into vampires in a two-step process: the human is first infected with the intense vampiric thirst for blood (gaining supernatural speed, strength and endurance in the process) and the change into the full demonic form is completed upon draining a human victim in their first feeding.

Infected humans with sufficient strength of will have been known to refrain from feeding for an indefinite length of time (magical bonds, regular exposure to sunlight, and avoiding physical intimacy all help), but no cure has yet been found for the "half-vampire" infected state.

The Red Court is highly organized in a feudalistic caste system with a King at the top, followed by Dukes and other ranks.

Black Court

The Black Court comprises the most well-known kind of vampire: the reanimated bloodthirsty corpses described in Bram Stoker's Dracula. In fact, the publication of that bookl is believed to be the primary cause of the Court's downfall. Black Court vampires still inhabit the human bodies they lived in before they were turned into vampires; the only difference is that their bodies have rotted like zombies in the time that they have been undead.

Black Court vampires possess all the classic strengths and weaknesses of Stoker's Dracula: they can lift and throw cars with one hand and crash through concrete walls without harm, but must sleep in their native soil and fear sunlight, garlic and crosses. The Black Court is currently the smallest and (politically) weakest of the Courts, although those few who survived the purges caused by Stoker's book are among the strongest and most cunning monsters in the world

White Court

This court is the most humanlike group of vampires. They are succubi and incubi who feed off the emotions and life force of their prey. White Court Vampires can do this in many ways.

The Raiths are sexual predators; they use their supernaturally good looks and an energy aura around them to attract both men and women to them. During intercourse, or any contact where emotions like lust are heightened, they feed off their prey. Victims of the feedings of House Raith grow to enjoy the experience and become bonded to their predator like a drug addiction. Other Houses such as House Malvora feed off fear. The Skavis feed off despair.

(My note: Raiths don't actually need to, erm, feed in that exact manner. A very flirtatious character that doesn't go any further could feed. A Raith vampire in the series is actually a hair stylist and feeds from the emotions of humans that way. Anyway, thought I'd bring that up so we don't have to worry about things getting too rated R)

The White Court is not endowed with as much physical strength as the Red or Black courts, but they make up for it by having many fewer vulnerabilities. Sunlight and holy artifacts (both of which affect vampires of the other Courts) do not harm them at all.

Their power derives from an internal demonic essence they call the "Hunger" which acts like a battery. If they refrain from feeding for too long, the "Hunger" drives them into a frenzy where they must feed (almost always killing their victims), and can drive them permanently insane.

When needed, they tap this store of energy to augment their strength, speed, resilience, and healing ability far beyond normal; while doing this, they radiate waves of cold (possibly an illusory reaction of normal humans to their energy sink), their skin whitens, and their eyes turn unnaturally silver. White Court vampire blood is pinkish instead of red.

Their largest weakness is true love: people who are, or have recently been, in real, affectionate and sacrificial love are highly resistant to White Court control, and can even physically burn and blister vampire skin.

White Court vampires are born, not turned like Red and Black Court vampires; if the offspring of a White Court falls in love with someone that feels the same way before feeding for the first time, the love can destroy the demonic side before it can manifest allowing the person to live a normal, mortal life.

Unlike the other courts, the White Court prefers to avoid direct confrontation. They are a court of schemers and prefer to stab each other in the back in exquisitely detailed plots to impress the others in the Court.

Another thing to consider. There is a a great sci-fi book I read a couple months back called Blindsight by Peter Watts (while the story itself was a bit droll the concepts were fasinating) it had a more logical version of vampires. They weren't turned human beings but rather a whole different species of its own right. They were predators that ate humans and lived for a long time. They had a sort of sixth sense that allowed them to have a basic idea of how the human population was. If it got too low, they would go into a hibernation state to conserve themselves and allow the human race to repopulate back to feeding numbers.

Being actual creatures holy water and the like didn't affect them, they were stronger etc. The idea of sunlight didn't get brought up if I recall, as the entire story took place on a space ship. They were nocturnal though.

Now, what interested me the most was their sensitivity to crosses.

They are creatures perfectly adapted as hunters and as such have a heightened sense of sight. The book explains something like you can only see one level of something in your sight, like the foreground or the background, the vampires in Blindsight could see everything at once with perfect clarity. Thus having no need to focus on certain objects.

They are also perfectly adapted to a natural environment. Both these things come into play with their sensitivity. Cross actually screw up their brains, causing anything from headaches to seizures. The reason for this is because a cross has a right angle, something that doesn't occur in nature.

~

Just thought I'd bring that up in case you want something more logical and less religious. If we are taking the religious route I'd like one detail clarified. Would crosses just hurt them in general, or would it be the channeled faith though said cross that would hurt them? If it's the channeled faith thing then it wouldn't just be crosses, Jewish people could use the Star of David, Pagans could use the pentacle, other holy relics like even the Shroud of Turin could injure vampires. Because we may want to consider our lore for a modern fantasy idea as well, we might want to consider other religions.

~

How about just plain water, would that hurt them in any manner? (Bloodrayne, your swamp area sucked)

Just how much does sunlight hurt them? Would it be a instantanious? Or an agonizing, skin charring, thrashing, screaming, blistering two minutes? Can they do something like stand in the shade during the day?

Do they have to have human blood? Would it have to be fresh human blood? I had a character that lived off hospital blood packs and rats. However in one book I read blood packs were tasteless and didn't provide any nutrition.

What about solid food? Are they able to digest it in a sort of useless matter or do they throw it up?

Assuming we're mature and/or comfortable to discuss this, what about a woman on her period? It was never mentioned in Twilight and Stephanie Meyer's excuse for never bringing it up sucked, though her idea of 'dead blood' goes well with my question of the hospital blood packs.

I have questions about werewolves too, but I think this post is long enough.
