"Nox" was the Latin word for night. It was also a fitting name for the jet-black ship Kathi Hansen was piloting. Her brother, Matthew Bito, had purchased the ship with spare money, and was allowing his younger half-sibling to take the reigns in this case.

Kathi was neither a bounty hunter nor a mercenary, although she had signed up for this "mission" as one of the latter. She was an investigative specialist. Normally, she worked with the Galactic Federation's military and civilian police forces, so a jump to an archaeological site would be a welcome respite from the hectic jobs she was used to. Jobs that had taught her well that it was just as important to be armed with a gun as well as a knack for getting to details.

BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!!! BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!!! BEEEEEEEEEEEE-

A shrill alarm pieced the interior of the ship. Kathi groggily reached up to turn off the alarm clock at the head of her bunk, only to realize that wasn't the source of the beeping. When she realized what the source was, she jumped out of bed and made a very short dash for the ship's bathroom. One injection of antipsychotic drugs later, and she emerged. Realizing she wasn't dressed, she hurried back to her room and threw on a black t-shirt, one that had already soked up plenty of blood droplets over the years. Her light-brown hair, however, remained just as messy as it was when she had woken up.

As she made her way up to the cockpit, she took a moment to think about the job ahead. Her brother hadn't approved of her choice of occupation, but he let her go when she pointed out that it was nowhere near the danger level of his job.

Kathi smirked. Matthew. The older brother she found out about when she was four. He was a good-hearted guy, but she knew a lot more about him than most people did. For instance, the fact that he would never pass up a good oportunity to earn some quick cash. Matthew was a thief and a liar as well as a faithful Marine, and he happened to be on leave right then. Kathi wouldn't have been surprised if he had already gotten into the archaeological expedition by posing as a worker, and planned to use Nox to ship stolen artifacts off the planet.

Especially if they were Chozo artifacts. If the planet was a Chozo military outpost, as had been rumored, things changed for everyone. For Matthew, the artifacts would fetch more money that could help pay for Kathi's medication (and other, personal expenses). Kathi, however, treated the possibility that the site was Chozo in origin quite differently. It was a major possibility, in her mind, that it could be a crime scene. And solving a mystery like that would be worth far more to her than any money the contract could offer.
"Why does everyone still call me 'kid'? I mean, seriously, right now, there's five twelve-year-olds helping fight this battle, and you're calling a nineteen-year-old gunnery sergeant 'kid'? I think I deserve a little bit more respect than that!"
"Sure thing, kid."
