Just Across the Street
Chapter Seven – Sacrifice
By Naomi Wang

Quick Summary: Judith and Naomi notice something strange in the house across from Judith’s. They investigate on the internet and discover the creature is called an Efira Allat, which has been spotted before. They call in the SSRUC, Scientists Supporting Rescue of Unidentified Creatures, who come in and destroy the creature. But the creature possesses Naomi’s body and then attacks Judith. The two go searching for more victims, and enter a nearby park. They find Zane and Adam, former schoolmates of Judith and Naomi. Zane and Adam find out that Judith and Naomi have been taken over by the Efira Allat and soon learn there is no cure, and the only way out is to kill them.

“There is one thing we can do, to save them.” Adam said glancing at Zane.

Zane searched Adam’s face for a clue, Zane stared back, “Adam…you don’t mean…?”

Adam closed his eyes, “It’s the only way. It’s the only thing we can do to save everyone.”

Zane nodded and sighed, “You’re right. We have to kill them.”

Adam glanced carefully down at his friends, “There’s no other choice, is there?”

Zane let out a small laugh, “That’s really sad.” Zane closed his eyes and his smile grew, “Ready?”

Adam shrugged, “Kill or be killed.” Both boys jumped down and the creatures looked up, snarling. “Whoa,” Adam said, landing on the ground near Naomi’s possessed body. The creature lunged at him, “Hey, you think we could kill the creature in possessing them and then free Naomi and Judith?” Adam asked, smashing his fist against the creature and avoiding being grabbed.

“Possibly,” Zane said, dodging a punch and jumping in the air to kick the beast. “Go behind them and bash their necks. That should knock them out.” Zane suggested, using the shoulders of the beast and jumping behind it.

“Okay.” Adam muttered, twisting the creature’s arm around and dashing around to hit its neck. “Crap, sorry about this, Naomi.” Adam said, drawing back his fist and landing it square on the creature’s neck.

“You’d understand, right, Judith?” Zane asked, smirking slightly despite himself and bashing the neck of his former schoolmate.

“Zane, you have to be more careful!” Adam said, staring hard at Zane as Judith slumped to the ground, unconscious.

“Yours is still alive, Adam.” Zane said, another laugh escaping his lips. “Adam, smash its head!” Zane cheered as Adam whirled around and kicked it.

“Zane shut the hell up!” Adam barked, ramming into the creature. Adam grabbed a nearby branch and swung it at Naomi’s neck.

“There you go!” Zane laughed, as the branch snapped in half and Naomi slumped onto the ground.

“The hell is wrong with you, Zane?” Adam growled, frowning.

“The hell is wrong with me? What’s not wrong with you, Adam?” Zane snapped, “I’m trying to help Naomi and Judith, what are you doing?”

“I was trying not to kill them, Zane.” Adam shot back. “And why were you laughing?”

“What? Is it against the law to laugh, Adam?” Zane asked back, growing impatient.

“Don’t start, Zane.” Adam threatened, staring hard at Zane.

“You’re just scared that when I start, you won’t survive.” Zane grumbled, stepping forward and glaring at Adam.

Adam searched Zane’s face, “What the –” Adam felt a tug at his leg as he was pulled onto the ground. Adam looked back, Naomi was barely conscious but snarled and tugged at Adam’s leg again.

“Take that!” Zane screamed, bashing Naomi’s head with his foot. Finally the creature stopped moving. Zane started to crack up, “Man, these guys don’t even put up a fight.”

“Zane, did you kill her?” Adam asked quietly, sitting up, rubbing his leg.

“I couldn’t have killed her; I just hit her with my foot.” Zane said back.

“Zane, but –”

“Oh and you’re going to tell me what to do, Adam?” Zane growled. “The boy who can’t even tie his shoes properly is going to tell me what to do?”

“Zane, listen –”

“Yea and remind me why I care what you have to say?” Zane snapped, lifting up Judith’s body. “Let’s just go find that stupid creature and get back to our normal lives.” Zane smirked, “Come on, Adam. Do you need help carrying your load too?” Adam didn’t speak. He was crouched over Naomi’s body. Finally, Zane walked over and sighed, “Here, let me carry her too then.” Zane said, shifting Judith’s body to one side.

Adam looked up and screamed, “You idiot! You killed her!”
