Just Across the Street
Chapter Six – Life Threatening Decisions
By Naomi Wang

Quick Summary: Judith and Naomi notice something strange in the house across from Judith’s. They investigate on the internet and discover the creature is called an Efira Allat, which has been spotted before. They call in the SSRUC, Scientists Supporting Rescue of Unidentified Creatures, who come in and destroy the creature. But the creature possesses Naomi’s body and then attacks Judith. The two go searching for more victims, and enter a nearby park. They find Zane and Adam, former schoolmates of Judith and Naomi. Zane and Adam find out that Judith and Naomi have been taken over by the Efira Allat and soon learn there is no cure.

Zane stood up; shaking the branch they were standing on, “That’s it! Adam!” Zane grabbed Adam by the shoulders and shook him, “Our project! To search those so-called fake creatures! Ours were the Efira Allat! That must be what’s taking over Judith and Naomi’s body!”

“A-are you sure?” Adam asked uncertainty. Adam, unlike Zane, had totally forgotten about the project and hadn’t even studied one bit on it.

“Don’t you remember? The green eyes? The unbearable hunger? Easily angered and once it finds prey, it won’t let it go?” Zane said, grinning and pointing down at the creatures below, “That’s it! The Efira Allat! Wow, a real live Efira Allat!”

“Okay, so we know what it is. Great. What now? How do you defeat it? What’s the cure?” Adam asked, glancing down as the creatures attempted to shake the tree, “Don’t worry, we’ll save you guys! Zane did his work! So doing your homework does amount to something! Zane knows the cure and we’re going to save you guys! Hang in there, okay?” Adam yelled down as the creatures paid no attention to him. “Alright Zane, tell me what we do to cure them.” Adam said, turning to Zane.

“Adam, we…” Zane gasped, “Adam…” Zane stared hard down at his former schoolmates who were now taken over by some creature who, until just now, Zane had thought didn’t even exist. Zane locked eyes with his friend, “Adam, there is no cure.”

Adam took a small step back. All this was happening, so quickly, it was too hard to understand and grasp. “Wait…” Adam held out a finger for Zane to stop talking. Adam closed his eyes, “I need to get this all through my head.”

“No! Adam we don’t have time for your stupid games! Don’t you get it?! Judith and Naomi –”Zane said, waving his arms all around, causing the branch to shake slightly.

“Shut it, Zane.” Adam snapped, he said it so loudly Zane stared back at Adam, “We need to think this through. It’s not time to lose ourselves in our emotions. Listen, we need to group every little bit of information we know on Judith and Naomi and then on the Efira Allat and then we can decide what to do.”

Zane stared at Adam in shock. Zane nodded, “Okay,” Zane watched as Adam started to list stuff off about what they could understand from their observations. 'When did Adam mature this much?' Zane asked himself in disbelief. 'He was just throwing pinecones like some monkey and now he’s acting like a professor!'

'Crap, crap, crap!' Adam said to himself as he noticed Zane listing off other things they had noticed, 'I cannot believe we’ve gotten ourselves into this! I should have never gotten out of bed this morning! I’m so glad Zane helped me figure this all out. Man, when did he get so smart? Doing all his work and figuring everything through and through.' “Zane,” Adam said quietly, interrupting Zane, “Who are we? We’re just kids! We can’t save our friends! We can’t! It’s over! No matter how much we try and try – you were right! There is no cure!” Adam slumped on the branch, “What were we thinking?! We’re done for!”

“N-no! We have to save them! We have to save ourselves! You said it yourself, Adam, we can’t die without a fight!” Zane said quickly, trying to convince his friend.

“We can’t save them, Zane.” Adam said coldly, not making eye contact but staring down at the ground and the fallen pinecones. “We were stupid to think we could.”

Zane scratched his head, searching for something they could do, “No, come on, Adam. I mean, we know that the Efira Allat are limited to the body functions of Naomi and Judith. They can’t climb trees, so neither can these Efira Allats.”

“It doesn’t matter, Zane!” Adam lifted his head and glared at his friend, “It doesn’t mean a thing! So what if they can’t reach us?! It’s not like we can live up here forever! We’re done for! They’re done for! It’s over! Who knows, maybe the entire human race is done for! It’s over, Zane. Give it up.” Adam said quietly, turning away to look at the sun, “There’s nothing we can do. There is no cure.”

“But we can’t just let human race fall because of us! We have to do something!” Zane said, biting his lip.

“There is one thing we can do, to save them.” Adam said glancing at Zane.

Zane searched Adam’s face for a clue, Zane stared back, “Adam…you don’t mean…?”

Adam closed his eyes, “It’s the only way. It’s the only thing we can do to save everyone.”

Zane nodded and sighed, “You’re right. We have to kill them.”

Adam and Zane want to kill me. I knew it. All along.
