Blizzard EV upgrades

Hi all,

I am new to this forum and i want to upgrade my ol Blizzard EV.

I have bought a full bearing kit and will buy better disk brakes from hot bodies.

But i have some questions regarding the rest of upgrades:
1. Do i need to upgrade my stock servo, and if so, which should i get?

2. I would like to use traxxas/castle brushless motor and esc.
They have to be waterproof and i would like to use my castle link that i already have to adjust torque etc.
Which motor will fit right in?

3. Any suggestions for a good and affordable transmitter and reciever kit?

Best regards Kristian

Welcome to the forum,

1. No not really, I would recommend savox servos. Alternately I would recommend the front servo mod since you can then rear mount the battery which will improve the EV's balance.
2. The VXL fits, I had to remove the plastic end cap however.
3. It really depends on personal preference and what you are looking for 2ch-4ch etc... HobbyKing has several value rx/tx combos. I own a fair number of radios from a Futaba 4pl to a HK GT2-B

Dear FrozenRc, thank you for your fast reply.

1. Do you have a link to that savox servo?
2. Is VXL a specific motor? Link? And this can be connected with castle link?
3. I would like a 4 channel system, i will check the futuba radio that you mention.

1. I don't have a specific servo in mind, was just recommending a brand.
2. I was referring to the traxxas VXL 3500 brushless motor.
3. The 4pl I have now is a 4 channel pistol radio.

Also, I don't think the need to adjust torque curves etc will benefit much in the EV. Here is a video of my EV using the VXL system.

The reason for wanting to adjust torque through castle link is that i plan to use my 3s lipo batteries from my e-revo. And that may be a little hard on the drivetrain?

I think i am ending up with a traxxas tqi 4 channel transmitter and reciever, with a traxxas waterproof reciever box.
And a vxl 3500 3s motor and esc.

I will have to do some more research regarding the savox servo.

I think you will be ok even on 3s, remember that Blizzards don't actually have much traction so stress on drive train is pretty low compared to a regular rubber wheeled RC.

Ok, thank you for the information.
Is there any other upgrades i should do while changing brake discs, differential oil and install bearings?

There really isn't much more you can do to them unless you can find a set of steel hardened diff gears, the part numbers for them are in the forum somewhere but they are not a currently manufactured part.

FZW-13, I believe. But, they're rare as hen's teeth, and pricey, when you do find them.

I ended up with these parts, the traxxas parts were quite pricey and i really hope the quality is just as good with these parts:

Any tips to a good and healthy Spur and pinion gearing for a good top speed and low stress/rpm for the motor?

Can't say for sure with that motor, you're going to need to start somewhere and then check motor temps. I run a 33T pinion with stock spur on my EV with the traxxas VXL on 2s.

Fzw18 is the steel diff and fzw25 is the metal diff case. Both quite rare.

Is it absolutely necessary to have the Fzw18 kit when you have brushless 3300kv with 2/3S lipo?

I can not find this kit available at all, and probably no aftermarket producers make hardened gears..

Does the blizzard share its differential design with any other kyosho models?

It's not necessary but I would make sure you grease aluminum one that comes stock. You will have it apart to put the bearings in anyways. Diff lock fluid is helpful as well. Here's a link to the old forum with help.
