Also if you had to mod anything to fit the pinion that you are running. I just fired up my DF for the first time with a Velineon brushless setup and 23t pinion on 2s. It is not as fast as I was expecting. |

26T fits without any mods. I'm thinking of putting a bigger one. |

Hey my man why don't you just try a 3s, it will really bring it to life. I use 3s in my two go fast "Cats" when I want to throw big rooster tails of snow and jump snow mounds. A man much smarter than me that does nothing but motors and ESC's says, "volt up and gear down" I have a 8.5t with 23/86 gearing and a 5700kv 4 pole with 21/86 gearing and it's night and day difference with 2s vs 3s. I'm telling you brother just try a 3s battery and you'll be happy. |

I use mine on 3S also, with a Trackstar WP 5200KV. It does move fast and shoot rooster tails but I'd like to get more speed out of it. Edited by irishman, Nov 9 2013, 09:27 PM.

Well I would love to try 3s but I don't have, I only have 2s and invested in 4 of them earlier in the year for my 1/10 monster trucks and 2s is way more than what I need for a pair of 2wd monsters. I have metal tracks and tiller coming for the SR so I've blown my upgrade budget for a while. I could see buying a smaller spur and large pinion since all I have for brushless is the velineon 3500kv. Wow dude, lol. You really want to go fast eh? There's always 4s if the ESC can handle it or you could look into a smaller spur gear. I'm assuming you're running something close to stock 86-88t. Kimbrough makes a wide assortment of spurs in 48p and their design allows them to bolt up to almost any make model. Jump down to a 75t or close and just watch your temps at first even though it's running in snow (sorry posting at the same time, lol) Definately try the smaller spur gear.

My ESC doesn't take 4S but using a smaller spur is not a bad idea. |

Same here I would be maxed out at 3s as well wondering what pinion a guy would have to go with if switching down to a 76t spur, I'm currently running the 86t. I would think that pushes me up into the mid 30's for a pinion. |

I was just looking at the following chart from Traxxas manuals which give you gear ratios for their 1/10th stuff and I have a question if anyone can answer.![]() If I'm currently running a 23t pinion on an 86t spur and have a ratio of 10.17 if I geared down to a 32t and 76t and have a ratio of 6.47 would my thinking of that being a 36% speed increase be correct? (6.47/10.17 = 0.64) Best I can tell gearing down will provide a greater % increase that moving to 3s which would only be 34%.

The facts sure do say that but if you could tell the difference with the naked eye I'd be super impressed, lol. Just remember when you gear up for top end speed gain you'll need to watch your temps and you may get a little more cogging at low speeds. Keep us posted if you make any changes. |

Ya the differences between gearing down and going to 3s wouldn't be noticable but I know the cost would be I started this post to try and find out what would fit with out mods to the motor plate. I don't have a LHS so I have to rely on the community or I may find myself with useless gears and a thinner wallet.I'm not horribly worried about temps at this point as my current setup barely produces enough heat to melt the snow around the motor that gets into the tub where as it get so hot in the monster truck that you can't even touch it (190+F with the IR temp gun). Also I only run the DF in the winter. I have good 50C constant lipos. |

I hear ya on cost and not having a LHS. I strongly suggest larger pinions and a smaller spur then. You could get a few pinions and a couple spurs for under 25.00. Do a little testing to get it where you want it. |

I have Velinion 3500 and a 8.4v 5000mah batteri. 31 pinion and 78/86 spur. I will upgrade to Castle 5700kv and Sidewinder 3, then Im gonna run som tests with 20, 26, 28 and 31 pinion just to check that the motor dont overheat ![]() I need the 3500kv motor in my Rustler VXL :P |

I couldn't do the poll as you didn't list the option I use, I got rid of the pinion and spur altogether and run a direct drive from my traxxas brushless to the diff. I have to feather the throttle to go otherwise it flips upside down. |
