Since this is Ford body is going on the flat Blizzard chassis, the wheel-well openings are completely open, and empty. Time to make some filler pieces.

Rear.

Front.

Just a black panel would be boring, I thought. I figured anyone who would be embarking on putting a Ford body on a cat chassis, would weld in some diamond plate. So...

Posted Image

Diamond Plate welded in, exhaust holes drilled...

Posted Image

Posted Image

Primed.

Posted Image

So many silvers to choose from. I chose this one...

Posted Image

Metal-ized.

Next, I welded them into place.

I traced where they would fit, then carefully sanded a small strip of the black paint away, for a nice strong bond. It would have been easier to just make the diamond plate pieces fit right against the wheel-wells, but I thought setting them back into the body a bit was much mo-betta.

That's it for now. I hope you like. Next, time for bed... :pbjtime:

It's Basswood, I believe Chris said. I was considering using some Cherry burl, but that would have required cutting, drying, and planing. Would have taken a long time.

I am a bit of a wood hoarder. Here is my workshop with my Burl collection. "Flat" wood is stored elsewhere...

Sucker does look good! As a machinist, I have 'Micro-Vision' (Able to see variations down to .0003 with the naked eye :D ) and the center dividers look like 1 piece, damn good work Mate. :nice: I'd planned a possible bed kit for the Pumpkin, but the sales of that Blackfoot bed were lackluster, so I thought Punkin' units would be about the same. Some folks have sent pics of their attempys at modding a bed kit, and until now all of 'em were, ah, how to say politely? Screw it, for lack of a proper descriptive adjective, Trashola! :palm:

All in all, after reading your build threads, I have a lot of respect for your abilities Man- Keep it coming.

I found this online- http://www.dealtime.com/madrone-madrona-cherry/IpI-yrns09Rv-EVCV__w7g==/info some Cherry Burl veneer, 1/32-1/42: If you wanted to, you could get something like this & I can cut the pattern into it as I still have the file, and you can have your wood. If you supply the veneer I won't even charge ya to do so, just a thought! Chris REC

Chris, I think you give me too much credit :D

I am just winging it here... THanks so much for the offer on cutting the burl-wood on the CNC, I really appreciate it. I don't think that it would really go with this build, as I am going to weather it, and a flashy wood would not "fit", if ya know what I mean...

I don't think I would have had the beans to cut this bed kit up, if I already didn't have another one already installed in a Blackfoot body. I didn't do the work myself, and it was not done "up to par" so I will do what I can to fix it...

Okay, bedtime.

Tailgate before.

Posted Image

After.

Posted Image

Welded.

Posted Image

Ahh...

Posted Image

Added some styrene in the front to push the bed back a small amount.

Posted Image

And, welded the tailgate/bed in. The rear section of the body will no longer be bolted in...

Posted Image

Some side strips were made...

Posted Image

Installed.

Posted Image

The tailgate of the original Midnight Pumpkin body almost lines up with the new bed width, but not exactly. There was really nothing I could do about this, nor about the wide top rim around the bed. Once I do some rounding, and it is all the same color, it should look pretty good (I hope). I made sure and cut the bed a little short so I would have a wide rim/strip in the front as well, so not just the sides of the bed were wide.

Hope you a-likey. More to come...

So, back to this. I had to step away from this for a bit, and work on my Hilux.

http://www.scale4x4rc.org/forums/showthread.php?t=64612&highlight=timmy2tracks

I needed to have a sense of completion, after some setbacks on this build. No need to go into details, but I purchased a Traxxas EVX-2 from someone, and got ripped off for the first time since being in the hobby since 1986. Very disappointing too say the least. So then I purchased a new unit, and had troubles with that one, which led to blowing up/ruining my only 2S battery. One thing I must say about Traxxas, their customer suport is top notch, and I finally got a new, perfectly working EVX-2. Finally, after months...

Posted Image

Many wires = many connectors.

Posted Image

Deans soldered on, x 4.

Posted Image

The EVX-2 is meant to run two motors from two 2S 7.4 volt batteries. So, this will give you the equal to a 4S 14.8 volt battery. I already own a 4S battery, which is actually my only battery now. Ugh. So, I made up one of these...

Posted Image

This plugs into one of the battery leads. One of the battery leads has the BEC and one does not, so you must find the lead that has the BEC and use that for the battery, and use this little guy for the other lead, basically fooling the speed controller that two batteries are hooked up. Much better than soldering the wires together, and if I ever get two 2S batteries, or two 1S batteries, I can just unplug this and run them both. Easy, peasy.

Next, for some body mounts. I got me some threaded rods. Two for the front...

Posted Image

And I am unsure of one or two for the rear...

Posted Image

Since I am working on the chassis, I also got me some small angle pieces to mount this new bumper. I also had to put some spacers under the battery holder-thingy to raise it up.

Posted Image

New bumper. Dog sleeping in background. Life is good.

Posted Image

This will help me get me un-stuck, or un-stuck some other peoples.

Posted Image

You get the idea.

Usually I like to gather most of all the necessary parts before starting on a build. Loosing your momentum having to wait for a box in the mail is no fun. This here is a part that I assumed I would not track down, and honestly forgot about completely. So, thanks to 1979Chevy for letting me know about this unit was up on eBay, It arrived from Hong Kong via Reaper (thanks as well!). Since this axle in this Blizzard is a unit from the Kyosho FW04/SuperTen model, it will accept the aftermarket diff units for the model. There is a ball diff available, but I am unsure of what the result would be in this application. Also, there is this...

Posted Image

It is a very precise and durable diff unit. It is also made completely out of a nice, hardened steel. Although small, I was impressed with it when I received it. Is it necessary? Probably not, but what the hecks...

Close up. It has only 2 spider gears.

Posted Image

Rubber o-rings. Tight fit...

Posted Image

Posted Image

Posted Image

Fill new diff with sticky stuff. I guess I could have recycled the 120,000 diff lock from the old unused diff. :palm:

Posted Image

Last look.

The diff unit came with these what look to me to be small phillips head wood screws (left). Me no like, so I used some 2MM hexscrews hardware instead (right).

Posted Image

Assembled with mo-betta hardware. Still have to push in the O-ring a little to properly seat it.

Posted Image

Remove these old, basically new unused stocker parts. Get fingers dirty.

Posted Image

Some side by side pics. Sorry they aren't better.

Posted Image

The original diff (left) has a plastic cup, while the new unit (right) is 100% steel. You can see the quality difference. You can even smell it, if you were here.

Posted Image

Stuck it in it's place, and added another liberal helping my favorite flavor...

Posted Image

Next up is mounting the body. I will have to do some light reading first, and run some ideas past my friend Stephen...
