(Re)-Engineering the Blizzard DF-300 Suspension (and other things) So I got my Blizzard DF-300 EV some time ago… (2 years ago) I never even tried to run it stock…. The first thing I did was tear it apart for a brushless upgrade, and a bearing kit I got from E-Bay. Brushless setup was the Castle Creations Sidewinder 1/10th Scale Sport with the CMS4600kv motor. Running on a 3s Lipo. I also made some Formica brake pads and tinkered with the brake setup. Heavy silicone “diff locker” fluid helped the steering, and straight ahead throttle response. The machine worked pretty well with the above setup, but I was never really happy with the diff and brake type steering. Don’t get me wrong… it worked well… but to my way of thinking, a 2 motor setup will always be superior for steering control. Anyway… I had a lot of fun with it until it took a big jump and broke one of the “suspension” arms. I put “suspension” in quotes because the stock “suspension” is really a joke. At least for hard bashing. Feel free to disagree about the stock suspension design... after all... this is just my opinion...So…. With the broken suspension I put the Blizzard away thinking I’d get back to it some day… The Sidewinder setup was removed and installed in various other projects… … And the Blizzard with broken suspension sat on a shelf for 2 years… Here are some pics of what I consider to be the suspension flaws on the Blizzard. If all pictures don't load properly please refresh your browser. One more pic... Here's the arm I broke... [IMG] [/IMG]I have a rough idea of how I'd like the suspension to work... I've begun gathering parts and materials... this is gonna take awhile... so bear with me.... I'll post pics and descriptions as I go along... I'm designing this "on the fly"... nothing drawn up.... so we'll see how it goes.... UPDATE: Went shopping today, got some stuff... played around with mock-up of how I want the suspension height and wheel spacing. More pics... The front two wheels will pivot on a trunnion type arrangement. The 3rd wheel gets a trailing arm. Pics are pretty much self explanitory... One washer on the inside and one on the outside of each wheel. [IMG] [/IMG]Wheels are 3 inches on centers. [IMG] [/IMG]I thought that looked the best. All the parts you see were made by the TLAR (that looks about right) Method. I did do some measuring so I can duplicate it all for the other side.... Lots of tedious drilling and especially tapping the threaded holes... Glad I have a drill press. Thats the only real piece of machinery I have... all the rest are hand tools. Oh, I did use a table saw with a metal cutting blade, to cut the aluminum pieces. I have a Dremel too, but it didn't get used much. I think my only concern will be potential snow build-up on the "L" part where the shock is.... We'll see.... The way the Blizzard comes from Kyosho, the rear wheels are kinda "locked" in position by the by the metal arm that goes from the rear of the trailing arm, and up to the bracket on the tub. The whole arrangement is able to pivot so you can adjust the height of where the rear wheel "rides". Kyosho sets it up so that the rear wheel is higher that the other wheels. In other words... If you set the blizzard on a level surface (remove the track) the front 3 wheel will be touching the surface, but the rear wheel is "up in the air". This seems odd to me... but I imagine there is a reason for it.... perhaps to have the "top" of the track a little higher up, and/or to make backing over obstacles easier, or to allow easier climbing when approaching a slope transition from level ground. Anyway... my thoughts are to keep all four wheels level and on the ground. This gives maximum surface area of the track riding on the ground. This will give you maximum "float" when in soft deep snow. It's very easy to make the rear wheels "active" instead of locked in position. I will be watching this and looking forward to a video when the test drive comes :).
