Received my SR today. Very impressive. I thought i'd post up some pics. The packaging is quite nice, mo-better than the DF-300, for sure. I got a Deans plug soldered up and took it for a test drive. It is so hard to drive with the supplied dual stick controller. I will be installing my Sabertooth 2x12 in it immediately, for sure. It is hard to operate the plow while driving, as you have to move the right stick right to lower the plow, and you have to hold the stick there. Difficult to do while moving it up and down. The speed controller has a double tap for reverse, which is not right. It makes it hard to quickly turn, as you have to move one of the sticks back, then back again to engage reverse. Check out the pics of the speed controller, funky! Other than that, I love it. The body/chassis is much less wide than the old versions, which makes the tracks look wider. More scale. There is room for another servo (opposite side of the chassis of the plow servo) to controller a rear tiller in the future. I got me some Traxxas 380's to go in, but the Kyosho 380's are much smaller and shorter. If I would want to run them, I would have to not use the plow, because the plow linkage is right near the motor. No big deal though. I would not run anything too powerful in this unit, as the transmission is bolted to the bottom chassis plate with 3 screws in a triangle fashion. If you grab the transmission and move it, you could see how too much power would crack the bottom chassis plate. Just like the old DX! I love it. It will be getting a lot of use this winter, for sure! I will post pics when I remove the old electrics and install the Sabertooth 2x12 and my receiver for my pistol-grip transmitter, and re-configure the layout... Awsome! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Totally awesome!! Great pics and I am jealous!! Hehehe. Interesting how they changed the layout from the old DX, eh? Very nice to see the side by side comparison. Keep us in the loop with your mods!! You will be helping many newbies like me out! Thanks. |

so jealous - that controller is going to be "target practice" after mine arrives, that's ridiculous... got a new sabertooth coming ( like yours ) for this one ( and leave my old one - the one that they discontinued - in the DX )..please say that the pinions have grub screws.... would like to lower the ratio .. |

So it looks like another must do mod is the radio? Dang that sucks! Oh well for this newbie I will see how it works when I finally get the Blizzard, battery and charger.

No, I don't think so ZippoMan. Well, you could certainly get used to it. I like twin stick radio's, but I think it is a bit hard to control the plow and the right track at the same time, but this really isn't a big deal. Just the fact with twin stick radios is that front/back is one channel, and side to side is another, x2 sides = 4 channels. But the fact that you have to double tap to get reverse is weird. When you turn a tracked vehicle, when going slow or stopped, it is nice to move one track forward and one reversed. When fast, you just let off on one side a little, so this is fine. I think you should get some hours in on it before you make any changes, as you have enough $ tied up in this thing! Install bearings and go out and enjoy it! That's my 2 cents... |

...if I was too keep this radio, which I would if I didn't already have another, since it is a rather nice 2.4ghz 4 channel affair, here is what I would do. I have not done this, but as far as I understand, it is not hard. I would open up the transmitter, take one of the left to right movement channels (channel 3 or 4) and disconnect it (wires to the stick), drill a hole in the case somewhere and hook it to a simple 3 position toggle switch. Now it would control the plow servo, up on switch would be up on plow, middle would be neutral or middle of plow, where it rests when you aren't using it, and down would be down on the plow. Simple. You never need the plow to go up, or higher than it is in the neutral position, so you mainly would be just throwing the switch from neutral to down. This mod would cost under 3 dollars. As for the double tap reverse issue, if it does bother you, just replace the speed controllers. There are actually two, one for each motor. Get two waterproof units that have instant or immediate reverse. Bing, bang boom. Problem solved. All is right with the world... Again, just an idea, I am sure other board members could make other suggestions. Edited by Small Factory, Dec 9 2011, 04:07 PM.

Very nice tips and I have a switch that might work if I drill into the radio. That is a cool idea. Wow so many more mods to think about, this keeps the mind busy. Really cool. Thanks again. Now post office hurry up with my Blizzard already..lol

Actually the switch I have in my hands is a 3 position but one direction is spring loaded so you have to hold it in position. This might work for lowering the plow? My brother gave me some switches when he worked at NCR so they are just laying here. They are 6A 125vAC so I guess they might be overkill. I might have to find a switch. Who knows...lol. I am too addicted to mods and I haven't even received my Blizzard yet.

Any online electronics retailer will have them. Or local electronics suppler. Cheap item. That is the cheap option. But, let me confuse you even more, since the kids are busy at the moment... The BEST option would be to get this speed controller... http://www.dimensionengineering.com/Sabertooth2X12RC.htm Now, this is a dual motor speed controller and a mixer in one unit. Most of us on here with the dual motor Blizzards use this. You will see them installed on the SR a whole lot. I won't try to confuse you too much but this will give you two options... To run the Blizzard just as it is, the only difference is that you will have instant reverse. One stick for each motor/track. Flip the "mixing" switch, and you can use one stick (lets say right if your right handed) to drive the Blizzard like using a joystick. Push all the way forward, and full speed, start to push stick to the left, and it will slowly cut power to the left motor/track. At a standstill, if you just push the stick left, one track will go into reverse, one forward, making it spin in a counterclockwise circle. Get it? This way, you could use the other un-unsed stick to control the plow, and when the rear tiller/groomer attachment comes available, you can use it for both. Maybe up and down for the plow, and left and right to raise and lower the rear groomer. Also, if you decided to run a pistol-type controller someday for some reason, then you can drive it like any RC car with that. You would just have to have extra channels/switches for the other stuff (plow/rear groomer/ect.)... That is what I would do. This dual stick transmitter controller that the Blizzard SR comes with is "linkable" so when you get another RC at some point, you just have to buy another receiver and just have one controller for all your RC's. And again, you can use the one stick to drive the car like a joystick, or use one to turn and one to forward/reverse. This is easy for me to say, but it is not my $67.50 I am spending! Hehe... You have plenty of time to weight your options... Edited by Small Factory, Dec 9 2011, 05:34 PM.

Tim that sounds super cool, yes you are fuelling my mind with more ideas..lol. I will see what happens. I might have to buy a pistol-type controller. It sounds like the best option for future upgrades. I will quit adding to this post now...we are getting off topic and more electronic related. Thanks again.

Hey Tim how much longer are the Traxxas motors? Could the plow servo be modded so it lays flat and the servo arm is closer to the chassis side; sticking up rather than laying down? If that makes sense.

Awesome! Looks much better than the promotional photos. I didn't know that this has a radio. Only thing I don't like much is the plow, looks a little fragile. Are you going to make a tiller for it ? I can't wait to see it in action. |

If my pistol grip has built in mixing, do you think I could keep the stock esc's and just mix it with my remote? Thoughts? |
