What's the point in trading with others when one can just trade with him or herself and make more of a profit?

Trade with others increases your overall trade income. Here is the formula used for working out trade income:

A trade route will provide income to a bases, equivalent to:
Trade Income = Sqrt(lowest base's income) x [ 1 + Sqrt(distance)/75 + Sqrt(Players)/10 ]
Where Players is the number of players involved in your trade network.

So, if you only have one player trading (yourself), that means that the trades generate less profit.

It's also worth noting that if you have internal trades, even though it seems like a lot of income, they are actually only half of their value, as two trade routes are taken up instead of one. So while getting 15 economy from an internal instead of 10 from an external seems like a good deal, really, the external is better profit.

You might want to read the help section of AE, it has loads of helpful stuff on it. It can be accessed from AE, its on a banner at the top of the screen, but here it is if you want it.
