Ok, so you have Blender, and python (needed for blender to work)? Good, to tell you the truth python is a pain to get a hold of. But onto the matter at hand.
Basic Commands
Ok, some of the commands you need, whuich are the most used commands you will use in blender
1. Extrude (E) Note: you must have (a) vertex(cies) selected to extrude, this is the most used command of all, it pretty much duplicates the vertices you have so you can extend what you are makeing
2. Scale (S), recommended that when you make a shape for modelling, you scale it in Object mode to make it oblong (what i do for weapons, not sure about ruins)
3. Remove Doubles (W, then Remove Doubles option) this gets rid of any extra vetrtices you have, lessening the work for other modellers and texturers, i assume.
4. Views, ok, a couple different ways you use views use the numberpad for these, but they are: 7, top view, 1, front view, 3, side view 5 is soemthing im still exploring, probly a zoom in mode to relieve us of the axis', which i find hard to do without.
5. Smooth, (W, then Smooth option) this makes your item less hexagonal, and more smooth, as the name implies, but i recommend the Set Smooth option, as regular smooth shrinks your model, set smooth smooths it to a degree and gives it darker color
Those are the most that you'll use, but its fun to explore the other ones you can use. If needed, i can post about other ones, but my definition may not be right, and im not sure i can post a how to make something tutorial, without screenshots, its almost impossible
