"I smell popcorn!"
|
She knew this was a crime against nature. She knew that she was tempting the fates. She knew that creating these creatures was just plain... marvelous. No matter how many times she heard the opposing side, Eliza could not stop her research now. True, she was playing God, but if God was the one who gave her these gifts, than surely he wanted her to do something with them. He would not have granted her the ability to create life (without the use of her uterus) if he didn't want her to manifest something not of His own design. Eliza sighed and pushed her hair back. Before her was a small table that she had been working on with some instruments. In the center of the table, on what looked like a plate, sat a small blob in the shape of a bird. For some reason, she had been obsessing over birds lately. It was probably because her and Mochi had been watching the Discovery Channel again, and they had a special on the flight of birds and how wings worked. This little bird, however, was not real yet. Sure, it was matter, but it was not animated yet, and she wouldn't give it life until she felt it was complete. Despite the bird's lifelessness before her, she heard the flutter of wings, accompanied by a soft mew. A gentle brush up against her legs had her reaching below her to pick up a small cat... with wings. ![]() Mochi was the only real successful experiment she had, and there were plenty of failures. She found the cat late one night. He was still a kitten then, too small to be without a mother. So when Eliza found him outside her door, she wondered why he was there, drenched by the rain. She took him in, but really had no need for a cat. As she tried to nurse him back to health, she tipped some of her Vitae power into Mochi, and grew for him small wings that grew with the rest of his body. It was extraordinary, especially later, when she saw he could actually use the wings. Eliza thanked the stars that he was semi-intelligent, and actually listened to her when she told him to get down from things. She stroked the wings now as she set him down on the table next to her "bird." With another sigh, she offered him a tired smile, "I think it's time for a little break, don't you?" With another soft mew from the cat-bird before her, she pushed back her chair and stood up. Mochi jumped to the floor and folded his wings behind him so he could walk comfortably after his master. Eliza picked up a picture frame from the desk and stared at its contents with a sad smile. She placed the photo back on the table but couldn't take her eyes off it. "Oh, Sana." She said to it. "One day... One day I'll tell you how sorry I really am." ![]() Then she lead the way to the hallway and up to the vending machine waiting for her. With a few coins, the machine gave up it's cooled beverages. Eliza lingered in the hall, leaning against the wall with a hand in her lab coat and Mochi standing guard next to her. It was always nice to take a break from the stressful parts of your job. |
