....

She took a deep breath at that point, watching the way he shifted. So... he didn't know either.

"Do you really think someone's going to fall for that Geblödel?" she asked plainly, the voice sounding almost rhetorical.

"How's her condition?" Achilles asked as he entered the base camp's medical center - a large tent marked with a red cross on a white square - where the expedition members have been brought to for medical assessment, standing next to a medical officer who was attending to Bai Ling.

"She'll pull through," the medical officer replied as he looked up at the former GLADIUS commander. "Took a bullet in the gut, but one of your agents have already done most of the work for us by closing the wound and removing the round," he continued as he checked her pulse. Bai Ling was unconscious thanks to the shot of tranquilizer she received from Cypriss back in the mine, and her pale complexion a sign of having lost a significant amount of blood.

"Lost quite a bit of blood back there, but with a blood transfusion she'll be right as rain," the medical officer nodded.

"Good," Achilles replied grimly before leaving the medical center, heading back to the command outpost.

"Ah, just in time sir!" A GLADIUS operative saluted as Achilles entered the command post. The preparations for interrogation were complete - and first on the list was the researcher who had earlier tried to attack Johnson. "He should be coming to anytime now..."

"Robert McGuire," Achilles called out the research worker's name just as the bald man's eyes began to open, a blurry image forming in his eyes.

"Eh... what?" the researcher opened his eyes wide, his expression a combination of shock and disbelief upon realizing he was handcuffed to a chair.

"Sir... his eyes," the GLADIUS operative added as he took note of the man's eyes - they were completely normal, not glowing red like those of the corrupted OASIS personnel Lavender and her team had encountered underground.

"Where am I?" the researcher asked. "...and... why am I handcuffed?"

"Robert McGuire, Do you really have no idea what just happened?" Achilles asked, transfixing Robert with his sightless blue eyes.

"What do you mean?" the researcher retorted. "I just received an email from Bai Ling congratulating the team on a good job and praising us for our groundbreaking discovery... and I was about to switch off my notebook and head topside, when..." Achilles raised an eyebrow.

"When what?"

"When the screen of my laptop went all funny and stuff... strange symbols flashing across the display and such - for a moment there I thought my laptop caught a computer virus or something and I was about to call up the IT crew, when I suddenly began to feel all dizzy, I think I must've fainted or something."

"Were you aware that you had tried to attack a GLADIUS operative who was sent to rescue you?" Achilles asked.

The researcher's eyes widened in disbelief. "Wh... what!? I... I swore I did no such thing, honest! I mean, it was during the evening, when-"

"It's late afternoon now, and more than a day has passed," Achilles cut him off as he continued to state impassively at the researcher.

"What? Oh my God... just how long have I been out?"

"Sir, I don't think this is getting us anywhere..." the GLADIUS operative interjected, whispering in Achilles' ear.

"I suppose you're right," Achilles sighed - it would appear the mind-controlling signals possess a limited range, and once someone got out of its range they would quickly return to normal, with no recollection of what they did while under control. "Send him for a medical assessment, and keep him under close observation," Achilles issued an order for an ATHENA division guard to have the researcher freed, but kept under observation.

"ARES Team, this is Achilles," Achilles radioed Lavender's team. "I've interrogated one of our prisoners and learned something... interesting. It seemed that the mind control works as long as one remains within the signal's broadcasting range - my guess is that if you can somehow halt the signals at their source, you will be able to return all the personnel to normal."
