For all it's 'new' technology and amenities compared to other, similar institutes, Marina couldn't help but think of this one as just another hospital. She'd been in and out of this one (and others like it) countless times, and somehow, they all seemed the same. The same lighting, the same ambiance, the same smell of antiseptic that filled there air and the never-ending stream of medical staff that shuttled to and fro to provide for the infirm.

Walking down a hall she was partially familiar with, she hadn't even changed out of her official uniform, being technically still on duty, while a small cloth bag dangled from her hands as she made her way through the usual maze of spotless corridors and medical technicians, before finally finding the room she was looking for.

"Guess who." she greeted teasingly as she opened the door.

It had been months since she had last seen Elza, when, due to the extent of her injuries at the time, Marina had ended up confined to a hospital in a Swiss Army base, for fear that she wouldn't survive a flight back to Nova Oasis in such a state. Now that she had recovered (and it irked her that she did so sooner than her friend), she was making use of the opportunity to visit perhaps 1 of the very few people from OASIS that she was actually close to.

Ironically, it was also the person who had defeated and arrested her, those 10 odd years ago.

Elza had been absentmindedly watching the news on television inside the room. There...really wasn't much for her to do, really. In between the checkups and other tests all she had been doing was a mix of eating, sleeping or other miscellaneous activities that required little movement. And to be quite frank...it was boring. A light sigh escaped her, she just wondered when it would end.

"Guess who."

The voice was all too familiar for Elza and it immediately brightened up her day, now smiling as Marina entered her room, sitting up a bit in her head. "Ah~ Marina~! Long time no see~!" she greeted her friend. It had been quite some time since she last saw her, and it was a pleasant surprise to say the least. Though, this visit did cause Elza to think for a bit, just how bad did she mess her own body up to still be in here while Marina's already up and about?

"Honestly, what am I going to do with you sometimes?" Marina asked in mock exasperation, taking a seat beside her friend's bed "Thank you, afterall I was the one that was saved back then."

She smiled pleasantly.

"But Elza, you shouldn't push yourself too much. Although I'm hardly in a position to tell you that, still, using emergency transport and intervening with a mission during your medical treatment without permission. A big punishment will come for that you know, and your body hasn't recovered yet. Using that dangerous cartridge system for so long, I'm surprised you didn't end up here sooner." she admonished Elza.

She couldn't say she wasn't guilty of the same things. Like her friend, when Marina set her mind to do something, she would do it, even at the cost of herself, if she deemed it was worth the effort. Afterall, if it wasn't worth doing, why bother at all? And if it was, why quibble over a few things?

Unfortunately, this also meant both of them had almost self-destructive tendencies to push themselves beyond their expected limit, and their many hospitalisations were testament to that.

In this case, Elza had learned of the details Marina's solo mission, and violated all manner of regulations to teleport herself directly to the mission site, where she'd found her friend barely alive and the slowly re-assembling (but mostly destroyed) remains of the thing she had been sent to investigate - apparently an autonomous relic that copied the 'ideal enemy' of whatever it was facing, and ended up having to use cartridges to finish it off.

Marina suffered from two broken legs, a singed arm, and a chunk of her left abdomen had been sheared off and almost 2 quarts of blood had messily stained the area. Recovery would take months.

There was a good deal of flak over the mission as a result, but rather than blaming a lack of suitable intelligence beforehand, the blame ended up falling on both agents. It was a mad world.

"Sorry...but I could't help it." Elza responded to her friend's admonishing, bowing her head a bit. She didn't regret her actions though, she did it to protect Marina, and was already prepared for the punishments that were waiting for her when she got out. Regardless, she fell silent for the moment, thinking back to that time...she already doubted GLADIUS when they sent Marina, Elza just had this feeling there was someone up there who didn't like her friend working with them.

"That's just the way you are isn't it?" she chided her friend "And I got this for you on the way here."

She opened up the small cloth bag, revealing a 60ml plastic bottle of... Icecream. Not the traditional sort, but a fairly new novelty that consisted of bite-sized chunks of vanilla ice cream coated in milk chocolate, assembled in a rough tear shape.

It tended to melt quickly into a mass of chocolate and vanilla, but it was still quite a treat, and could be eaten with one's fingers. A novelty, but at least an amusing one.

"I know how much you like sweet things, and I doubt you've had any in the past few months." she said cheerfully.

"I've been going through withdrawals, thank you~!" Elza said half jokingly, her hands playfully shaking to emphasize it. She hadn't had anything sugary since she was admitted, and jello barely counted as a dessert. Such was the pains of food in a hospital. Regardless, sweet things were one of the girls many weaknesses, and it was showing.

She had another one, and it was showing up soon. Sitting on top of a pillow next to her was a small plushie, one of a tare-panda, almost napping away until Elza put it on her lap. "Mr. Panda, look Marina gave us sweets~."

Snrk...

Marina couldn't help herself when she saw the Panda, and almost broke into a fit of laughter. It was something she'd bought for Elza about 3 years prior, when they'd been on assignment in Japan. Elza had simply found it so cute, she couldn't look away, and jokingly, Marina had bought it as a present. Afterall, it was pretty cheap, and it was pretty cute.

"You still have that Panda after all this time."

"You didn't need to laugh..." Elza spoke up with a slight pout, giving the small plush a hug all the while. "Well, it was a gift from you, and I did say I'd take good care of it." she added, looking down at the small bear. Despite being a little old, it was in a decent enough condition, evidencing that she did indeed take care of it through the years.

"Yes, you did."

She patted the little panda plush's head

"Well then, Mr. Panda, I'm a little unreliable, so please take care of Elza for me when I'm away." she told it, smiling softly.

Elza waved one of Mr. Panda's stubby arms as a yes in response to Marina's little request, returning her friend's smile with one of her own. "He's been doing that pretty well, I think. That aside, it really is nice seeing you again, Marina. It gets kind of lonely here." Elza spoke up. "Though I was hoping we'd be out at the same time." she added, laughing a bit.

"After what, a decade of using that dangerous cartridge system? Your body is alot more screwed up than mine." she scolded Elza again. "You should take your time and recover. Maybe next time, we'll even be able to work together again."

She smiled pleasantly again.

"It's been a long time since we've been able to do that hasn't it? Almost 2 years now. Well, I just wanted to spend some time with you again. Who knows how quickly I'll be sent off again since I've already recovered enough to return to work afterall."

Elza flinched a bit at the scolding, but what she said was true. She'd been using Raising Heart for so long she just grew accustomed to it, until that one day she just...lost it on one mission. After that she learned just how bad it was: to the point she even needed rehab just to walk again due to it. Still, it faded and she smiled again, nodding in response. "I look forward to when we can work together again." she said simply.

"Hopefully they don't send you off too soon though~" Elza mused, she too wanted to spend time with Marina again, of course what they could do right was rather limited all things considered.

"You know how it is though." she stopped. She didn't want to upset Elza, and there was obvious worry in her face when she started that line of thought.

Not that it could be helped. Everytime, even for her, she couldn't help but worry as well. It was quite odd in a sense that both ended up fiercely protective of the other, despite the fact that (or perhaps even because that, who knows) they were both field agents for an organisation that had to deal with all manner of dangerous situations regarding "Others".

"Don't worry, I've become stronger too." she reassured her friend.

"I know, but I still can't help but worry, I am your wife friend afterall." Elza spoke. Still, it was part of their jobs so there was nothing either could do against it. With that, Elza relaxed a bit and lay back down.

"So...why did you go?" she asked out of the blue.

"Well... that is..." she seemed abit taken aback by it.

She could have simply said that she'd gone due to orders, but for such a ridiculous thing as the previous case, she could have probably easily protested that it was a suicide mission. Afterall, under normal circumstances, an entire team of case officers would be assigned to it, rather than just a lone investigator.

And yet she still went anyway, and Elza by now knew that while Marina didn't mind the possibility she might die, she also didn't care to die stupidly.

"...You could say I just wanted to meet that one who had circumstances similar to mine." she told Elza. "When it turned out to be just a machine.. it felt like I was being stepped on, and I got mad like an idiot, so I didn't call for backup."

She gave an ironic laugh.

"I guess I couldn't bear that there's no one else like me left in this world." she said, giving off a thin, ironic smile. Afterall, most of her 'sisters' were long since dead.

She was lying of course. But for all things, she was a pretty good liar. At the least, it wasn't obvious she was.

The truth is, I wanted to prove something. she thought to herself To prove that I was strong enough to protect you after everything. That's why it's so ironic how it turned out.
