"You've got the right idea, but pretty much its the same that most people have these days. Totems are indeed spirits, you may call people who believe in such things these days as pagans. However, it couldn't be further from the truth. The ones who believed in totems, the real totems were others." Terado replied as they proceeded down the passageway. They soon found themselves facing a large stone door, with a set of symbols inscribed upon its surface that appeared to bear similarity to the one the lycan had drawn outside using his blood. Turning around to look at Lavender in the eye, Terado continued, "I feel that I can trust at least one person in this era with this knowledge, seeing as you have proven yourself to me on the train." "You honor me with your trust," Lavender replied, nodding solemnly. She did what came natural to her - lives were at stake, the well-being of innocents were threatened, and the most sensible choice she made at the time was to eliminate the threat that would endanger the lives of many. Bending down a little so that they were on eye level with each other, the lycan introduced himself, "My name is Terado, I am the only surviving Sentinel from a time when this earth was still young and uncorrupted by machinary and science. I have been blessed with eternal life, by the king of totems and spirits. The earth king Gaia." "And my name is Lavender Nicole Smith," the elfin-looking Esper replied. Having known the lycan's name it was only fair he got to know hers as well. Slowly straightening back to his full height where he now stood taller than Lavender by more than a head, Terado spoke, "It has been my duty for the past several hundred years to maintain the balance between humanity and others, with the help of the spirits of the earth. What I am about to show you is a spirit who calls himself Al-Aqran, one of the mighty guardians of the desert. I must warn you, not to speak, move suddenly or act until I have formally introduced you. Otherwise there's a chance he could kill us both." Lavender nodded solemnly after hearing Terado's warning - the spirits do sound like a rather temperamental bunch, as ancient legends would have her to believe. As Terado touched the eagle totem worn around his neck, his very body seemed to glow with a pale blue light which concentrated in his outstretched hand, which the lycan placed on the center of the door, causing the markings to shine with a light of their own before the heavy stone door lifted up, granting them access to the interior of the chamber, lit by the similar blue light that the markings on the door glowed with. Lavender gasped in awe at the spectacle - if only she could photograph all of this, this could be the discovery of the decade for Project OASIS! But she knew better than to tempt the totem's wrath... but if only the founding trio of Project OASIS - Möbius, WTB and Munchausen could witness all these! At the center of the room stood an altar, on which rested a necklace with a carved scorpion medallion. "Enter quietly and stand clear of the exit, stand just to the side of the door and don't move." Terado whispered. Lavender nodded silently as she entered the chamber behind Terado, stopping once she made her way past the door's frame and standing next to the exit, wondering what would happen next. |

Checking to see that Lavender was where she was supposed to be, Terado began to chant, "Ma lin do ra ni go set me, ma lin do ra ni go set ma," The chant resounded throughout the tomb and soon the blue light began to become replaced by a rusty red light. Smoke seemed to eminated from out of nowhere and come down to the scorpion medallion in the middle of the altar. The medallion no began to glow and made the smoke swirl around it. Terado remained motionless, both himself and Lavender were stained a reddish-orange by the light. The smoke now began to form, taking on the appearance of a scorpion. The ethereal besast let out its cry, a high pitched shriek that caused the walls to vibrate, before setting its eyes on Terado. The Sentinel stopped his chant, bowing down on one knee to show his respect. "Great and powerful Al-Aqran, I humbly seek your audience." There was a silence, all except for the off scittering noises caused by Al-Aqran's mandibles. Finally, the great beast spoke, "Rise Sentinel. You need not bow in my pressence." Terado knew that he would say that, he did after everytime he bowed to him. The problem was that if even a totem knew you, they soon forget what they had said during a particular conversation. Hence why it was always safer to have the proper manners. "Thank you Al-Aqran." Terado rose up, looking into the black eyes of the smoke scorpion. "Tell me, tell me guardian. What is the state of the world now?" Terado took a breath, "The world is in a state of confusion. The magics that the sentinels worked so hard to seal, are now freely used by humans and others alike. Wars have created chaos amongst humanity and power is sought after by all." Al-Aqran stayed silent for a moment, then replied, "How do you propose, to provide proof of this?" That was when Terado outstretched his arm towards Lavender, "I have brought with me, a mortal. A woman who has lived and seen these events with her own eyes. Her name is Lavender." Terado had no choice but to refer to Lavender by such a term. Only those that had titles under the old code magical lore could be reffered to as something else. Al-Aqran shifted his gaze towards Lavender, watching her for a long time, before speaking, "Step forward. Tell me of the state of the world." |

Quietly observing Terado go about the ritual proceedings, Lavender stood side as the lycan began a chant, "Ma lin do ra ni go set me, ma lin do ra ni go set ma," the words echoing through the chamber, and the blue light that filled the chamber would soon the replaced by a red one, even as smoke appeared out of nowhere and streamed towards the scorpion medallion. As the medallion glowed, the smoke began to swirl around it. The two of them were still as the reddish-orange light washed over them, the plumes of smoke swirling and forming into the shape of a scorpion, followed by the apparition delivering a piercing shriek that seemed to shake the very stones in the chamber before setting its eyes on Terado. The lycan ceased his chant before lowering himself on one knee as a gesture of respect to the mighty nature spirit. "Great and powerful Al-Aqran, I humbly seek your audience." Except for the chittering of the scorpion spirit's mandibles, the chamber was silent with neither Lavender nor Terado saying a word, before the scorpion finally replied, "Rise Sentinel. You need not bow in my pressence." "Thank you Al-Aqran." Terado replied as he rose to his feet. "Tell me, tell me guardian. What is the state of the world now?" The spirit known as Al Aqran spoke. Taking a pause to catch his breath, Terado replied, "The world is in a state of confusion. The magics that the sentinels worked so hard to seal, are now freely used by humans and others alike. Wars have created chaos amongst humanity and power is sought after by all." There was another brief intermission of silence, before Al-Aqran spoke again, "How do you propose, to provide proof of this?" Stretching out an arm, Terado gestured towards Lavender. "I have brought with me, a mortal. A woman who has lived and seen these events with her own eyes. Her name is Lavender." The spectral scorpion affixed its gaze on the purple-haired Esper for a while before speaking, "Step forward. Tell me of the state of the world." "As you wish, Great One," Lavender replied calmly as she stepped forward, stopping next to Terado. "In the decades before my time, the world experienced a period of upheaval - there is a sudden increase in the population of Espers - humans with the ability to wield supernatural forces. What followed in the years to come are a series of conflict between Espers and humans..." Lavender provided a summary on the history of the OASIS Foundation and the organization's vision, Dr. Renard Möbius and his E'S theory, as well as some of the key conflicts between humans and Others in the past two decades - such as CRASH and the initial disbanding of Project OASIS, ambitious Espers who strive to gain greater power for themselves, and governments who seek to build their own Esper army in some sort of E'S arms race. "...and that is basically what has happened to the best of my knowledge," Lavender concluded, quietly awaiting Al-Aqran's reply. Edited by Lawman, Apr 28 2009, 09:04 AM.

The great scorpion was silent, even after Lavender finished her explantion. It had been common knowledge to every totem that Terado had stored away, that the Sentinals had been defeated long ago. However, with this knowledge coming from Lavender's mouth as well, it confirmed that Terado had no been lying. That and it gave both Terado and the totem a better understanding of worldly matters and oragnisations, as opposed to the facts that got distorted by the general public. Al-Aqran then spoke again, "Terado, what of my bretheren? I trust they have not fallen victim to any forces." Terado shook his head, "No, they are all still within their sealed temples, just as you are. The world today can only guess as to where such powerful spirits slumber." The scorpion seemed to pinch its pincers in agreement. "You have done a fine job...your father would be proud." Terado looked down slightly, looking down at his eagle totem. He had recieved this from his father and it was the only momento he had from his past, aside from Kaneryuu. "However, with this new knowledge, I feel a more active stance should be taken." Terado looked up suddenly, "More active?" Did he have a plan? What was it that he wanted to do? Terado had to be careful, the spirits were not used to being told no. "Yes. I wish for you to set me free of this tomb and become a carrier for my power." Terado's eyes widened, even though he had to force his face to remain emotionless, "Lord Al-Aqran, I fear I am not ready to control the power of two totems. I have only just gained the trust of Lord Aquila." Even though Terado had been alive for so long, it had taken him centuries to awaken the eagle totem. He had no earned it, it had simply been given to him. By all rights, that very act defied him access to the powers over air for a great deal of time. Until he proved himself in battle that was. "Sentinal. Are you choosing to oppose your duty?" The scorpion's tone was becoming slightly agitated. "Of course not sir, I simply fear for both your and Lord Aquila's safety. A weak vessel," it was always best to remain humble before totems, "such as myself could possibly be unable to contain two such omnipotent spirits. I fear that both of you may then become exposed to the those with evil hearts, who would treat you no better than mortals." Al-Aqran remained silent for a moment, but Terado took that moment to speak again, "May I have some time now, to consider a compromise." The scorpion replied immediatly, "Yes. But be quick." Terado ushered Lavender out of the room, moving slightly down the corrider into semi-darkness. |

There was a moment of silence after Lavender had finished speaking. After a while, the spectral scorpion known as Al-Aqran spoke again. "Terado, what of my bretheren? I trust they have not fallen victim to any forces." The spirit asked. "No, they are all still within their sealed temples, just as you are. The world today can only guess as to where such powerful spirits slumber." Came Terado's humble reply. Al-Aqran appeared to clack his pincers as a form of agreement. "You have done a fine job...your father would be proud." Lavender looked at Terado as the lycan looked down upon the eagle medallion worn around his neck - so as the spirit had said, it would appear that Terado has had quite a fair bit of history and is far, far older than she could even guess. "However, with this new knowledge, I feel a more active stance should be taken." Al-Aqran continued, causing Terado to look up. "Yes. I wish for you to set me free of this tomb and become a carrier for my power." The spectral scorpion spoke. Lavender could notice Terado's eyes widen momentarily as if in surprise, although the lycan's expression remained emotionless. "Lord Al-Aqran, I fear I am not ready to control the power of two totems. I have only just gained the trust of Lord Aquila," The Sentinel replied. "Sentinal. Are you choosing to oppose your duty?" There was a hint of agitation in the spirit's voice, causing Lavender's elfin ears to perk up with caution, although the Esper also maintained a composed and emotionless expression. "Of course not sir, I simply fear for both your and Lord Aquila's safety. A weak vessel," Terado replied humbly, "such as myself could possibly be unable to contain two such omnipotent spirits. I fear that both of you may then become exposed to the those with evil hearts, who would treat you no better than mortals." Eh... weak? Lavender thought. Now that is something, considering how Terado seemed so formidable back on the train, battling the elder vampire and his mooks. His abilities clearly matched, if not surpassed that of a Class-A Esper such as herself. Although part of her did wonder if the mightiest Espers like WTB, Munchausen or Achilles-sensei could have what it takes to earn a totem. As Al-Aqran remained silent, Terado spoke again. "May I have some time now, to consider a compromise." The Sentinel asked. "Yes. But be quick." Came the spectral scorpion's quick reply. As Terado ushered Lavender out of the room, the Esper followed him out into the dimly-lit corridor, wondering what would transpire next. |

"We don't have much time." Terado looked Lavender up and down, giving her some sort of once over examination. He had only one chance to prevent this damn spirit from starting a temper tantrun and escaping the tomb. She was most likely his only bet and even then it was a long shot. Al-Aqran hadn't eaten her, so that was a good sign at least. "Lavender, I know this is sudden, but despite my strength, I can't control two totems at once. The sheer mass spiritual flow is inconceiveable." He clasped her shoulders with both his hands, "I need you to be his guardian. Otherwise his anger could cause the whole place to collapse, before he goes on a rampage to vent his anger." Terado released her, waitng for her response, "I've seen that you have a good heart, so I can entrust you with this." But Terado still was going to take safety measures. Receiving a totem was no small act. He had to bond the two of them together himself, due to the totem not initially choosing Lavender. While doing that, he'd seal its power, so that it gradually slipped out and so that Lavender could learn to control it little by little. If Al-Aqran refused and tried to manifest with Terado, he'd have to call on Aquila to hold him off while he bound him to Lavender. That is, if she agreed. If not, then Terado would have to reseal the tomb and escape with the girl. |

"We don't have much time." There was urgency in Terado's voice. "Lavender, I know this is sudden, but despite my strength, I can't control two totems at once. The sheer mass spiritual flow is inconceiveable." She could sense that there has been some kind of tension between Terado and the spirit, when the lycan suddenly took hold of her, holding her shoulders in his hands. "I need you to be his guardian. Otherwise his anger could cause the whole place to collapse, before he goes on a rampage to vent his anger," the Sentinel continued, letting go of her as Lavender straightened out her shirt. "I've seen that you have a good heart, so I can entrust you with this." Now, that was rather sudden and out of the blue - although the choices were clear; if the spirit wasn't appeased he would most likely break out of the tomb, possibly causing the entire place to collapse and killing them both. She wasn't sure if she'd be up to the task of being the nanny for what seemed like a pretty whimsical and temperamental entity. Lavender only needed a few seconds to make her decision... if it would protect many, then so be it. "Tell me what I need to do then," Lavender replied calmly. |

Terado felt a large weight lift off his shoulders. Thank heavens this girl understood the crisis at hand. "Thank you Lavender." He looked back down the passage way. The light from inside still seemed as they'd left it, so Al-Aqran wasn't about to throw a temper tantrum yet. He then looked back at Lavender, wanting to reassure her. "Alright. Basically, this is what will happen. I will announce to him that you are to be his human guide and caretaker. I think that he maybe likes you seeing as he didn't try cut your head off when I introduced you the first time." Terado then raised his hand and lifted one finger, "First, I'm going to place him back into the amulet and seal it with me blood. That should keep him powers dormant while you get used to carrying the new weight around," And boy was it going to be a heavy one. Spiritual energy like that went unparalled to most mortal creatues, aside from those heard in legends, like say for example Hercules. Another finger then went up, "Secondly, I need you to swear, that you will not abuse this power I am about to bestow on you or even speak of it to another living soul." Terado paused, "Even those in OASIS." Terado needed to make sure that the totems remained secret until he gained permission to distribute them. Like now. |

"Thank you Lavender," Terado replied as he glanced down the passageway into the still-lit chamber, for now the mighty spirit had remained calm, but for how long? Looking back at Lavender, Terado continued, "Alright. Basically, this is what will happen. I will announce to him that you are to be his human guide and caretaker. I think that he maybe likes you seeing as he didn't try cut your head off when I introduced you the first time." The purple-haired Esper nodded quietly as Terado lifted his hand and raised a finger - one. "First, I'm going to place him back into the amulet and seal it with me blood. That should keep him powers dormant while you get used to carrying the new weight around," Well it was certainly one hell of a responsibility, she knows this is something she would have no problem adapting to. Terado then raised another finger - two. "Secondly, I need you to swear, that you will not abuse this power I am about to bestow on you or even speak of it to another living soul." Lavender nodded again. "Even those in OASIS." Terado spoke after a brief pause. Well, that was a little disheartening - surely the researchers at say, ALPHA Labs would have much to learn by studying this marvel of nature, but a promise is a promise. "This I promise you, that I will never exploit the power of nature's protector for personal gain," she replied calmly, raising her right hand as a gesture of taking a vow. "And its secrets I will defend, to the grave if necessary." |

Terado nodded, "I'm happy to hear that. Although I doubt your totem will let you die once the two of you become in sync with one another." Terado thought that it may be best to return now. He didn't want to keep Al-Aqran waiting. He was one of the the most volatile of totems after all. Entering back into the chamber, the spirit spoke, "What conclusion have you come to?" he was a lot snippier than when they'd left. Obviously because he was made to wait. "I shall not be your guide," The Scorpion raised its tail slightly, its face incapable of expressing anger, "However, Lavender shall." The tail slowly went down again. "Are you sure this mortal can be trusted Sentinal?" Terado looked back at her, only once, before looking back at Al-Aqran. "Yes. I have seen good in her heart and she has sworn herself to the duty and all that comes with it. We can trust her." The scorpion clicked its pincers, "Then you realise it is your responsiblity to do away with her should my power be misued." Terado nodded, he couldn't show softness towards Lavender here, "Yes. I am bound by duty." "Then it is settled. Begin the ceremony." Al-Aqran began to slowly seep back into his amulet, as Terado drew blood once more, chanting the same chant as when he summoned the totem. He stepped forward to the altar, smearing his blood on the medallion, while the whispy form of Al-Aqran began to swirl above him and Lavender. As Terado chanted, he began to mark Lavender with his blood, placeing spike, swirling patterns below her eyes, the centre of her chest and upper arms. These were the markings of a totem carrier. As Terado continued the chant now, the blood markings began to glow and seep into Lavender's skin. She would start feeling a slight tingling, before and immense floodgate of power was unleashed upon her as Al-Aqran was suddenly sucked back into his amulet. The light suddenly vanished in the room, leaving them both in darkness. The markings would dissappear, only to be seen again when Lavender first called upon the scorpion totems power. "You are now an honourary Sentinal now. And as such, charged with protecting the world, far more than you ever were before." Within the darkness, Terado couldn't help but smile. Perhaps, because he was not alone anymore... |

"I'm happy to hear that. Although I doubt your totem will let you die once the two of you become in sync with one another." Terado replied, nodding in approval. As Terado returned to the chamber, Lavender followed suit - after all, after having witnessed Al-Aqran's temperament first hand the wine-haired Esper knew full well that patience wasn't one of the virtues good ol' 'Scorpion King' was known for - and for a timeless entity such as himself, she had to admit that was rather ironic. "What conclusion have you come to?" Al-Aqran asked, now more - excuse the pun - snippy than before. "I shall not be your guide," Terado's seemingly defiant statement caused the spectral scorpion to raise its tail in annoyance. "However, Lavender shall." The Sentinel continued, at which Al-Aqran slowly lowered his tail. "Are you sure this mortal can be trusted Sentinal?" Al-Aqran asked apprehensively. Terado looked back, stealing a brief glance at Lavender before turning back to face the spectral scorpion. "Yes. I have seen good in her heart and she has sworn herself to the duty and all that comes with it. We can trust her." "Then you realise it is your responsiblity to do away with her should my power be misued," Al-Aqran replied as he clicked his pincers. "Yes. I am bound by duty." "Then it is settled. Begin the ceremony." Al-Aqran replied as his form became misty and began seeping back into the medallion. The lycan drew blood from his body once more as he chanted the same verses he had been reciting when he summoned Al-Aqran, as he stepped forward and smeared his blood on the medallion, and all this while the mistlike form of Al-Aqran swirled overhead. As the ritual continued, Terado marked Lavender with his blood, drawing patterns that resemble spiky swirls on various areas of her body - mainly below her eyes, in the middle of her chest and on her upper arms. She didn't know what those markings meant, but she guessed they were somehow a link between herself and the spirit. As Terado continued his chant, Lavender experienced a tingling sensation as the markings glowed and seeped into her skin like luminescent tattoos, and before long she could feel a massive surge coursing through her being as a contractual bond was forged between herself and the spirit as Al-Aqran vanished back into the medallion. Darkness shrouded the room as the light faded, with the markings on Lavender's body disappearing, while the Esper looked on, breathing heavily. "You are now an honourary Sentinal now. And as such, charged with protecting the world, far more than you ever were before." All this, on top of her role as the commander of GLADIUS? Now she wondered if she should be frightened or honored. But after a moment of silence, Lavender smiled calmly as her voice resounded in the darkness of the chamber, "It is an honor to serve... I shall not fail you," she replied resolutely. |

Terado nodded in the dark, being able to see Lavender as normal as before due to his eyesight not being hindered by light or darkness. "I cannot tell you how much I appreciate that. Believe it or not, you did a great thing today." This darkness, this darkness began to make Terado's memories stir. How long ago had it been? How long ago had it been since he had watched her die? He couldn't even remember it ha been so long ago. All he could remember was her name, Delila. Terado's old feelings that he thought he had buried long ago were being triggered. But why this girl? There had been many others? Then, he realised it. It was her smell. It smelt so similar now that he actually thought about it. He had only ever gotten her scent from times when Lavender had been void of any perfume, unlike most modern women. It was her natural smell. He then said, a few seconds later, "Thank you, Lavender." he then leaned forward, kissing her forehead gentlye, before turning around and moving down the tunnel. Idiot. It's not her...stop thinking about it... Terado ran his hands through his hair in frustration. Curse it for not being truely immortal as opposed to simply having eternal life. If he was immortal he wouldn't be victim to these human impulses. |

"I cannot tell you how much I appreciate that. Believe it or not, you did a great thing today." Lavender heard Terado's voice in the darkness. She could feel it too - Lavender sensed that she had performed something noble - to gain the approval of an ancient defender of nature. Sure, her higher-ups at the OASIS Foundation would be looking forward to her report on the Morocco assignment, as well as answers as to why she had failed to comply with their orders and not returned to Nova Oasis as soon as her assignment was completed. The only thing she knew not to include in her report would be what just went on here in Egypt, in this forgotten tomb and what took place within. Lavender reached into her pocket and retrieved her LED flashlight, flipping on its switch just in time to see Terado lean in and plant a kiss on her forehead. "Thank you, Lavender." "Eh..." Lavender tried to say something, but found herself speechless and once again blushing as the Sentinel turned around and proceeded down the tunnel, retracing back their steps from whence they came. |

Terado made his way down the tunnel, reaching the entrance anti-chamber. He could feel his heart pounding. He had broken his own rule, to stay detached. He'd only met this girl for the second time and under no romantic circumstances what so ever. Perhaps he had not attended to these such matters for far too long. But, he very well could not take out his urges on a girl who's duty was now as sacred as his own. He took up his cloak again, placing it over him, but leaving the hood down for the moment. He went to the tomb door, touching it with his hand. There was still some slightly damp blood on it, so the door was able to open again, letting in the hot Egyptian sunlight. He should have left right away, he should have never turned back and looked. But he stood there waiting for her, waiting to see her come around the corner. How could he have let this chink in his armour appear? It was so...frustrating... Damn it all. This was his animalistic side taking over. That damn thing had stronger urges than he ever could. Was his recent transformation in Morroco the cause of this? Was his other half's unconsciousness seeping over into his human mind and swaying his better judgement? "Maybe I can't just bury the past..." he whispered. |

[Meanwhile...] A man of Caucasian descent with short brown hair and dressed in a gray business suit and blue tie moved down the street in the old residential district, holding a Blackberry Curve 8330 PDA in his left hand. He would've looked like a foreign businessman if not for a barely-noticeable brass lapel pin on his jacket collar bearing the GLADIUS insignia which denotes his status as a field operative from the ATHENA division. Strange, the agent thought as he looked at his Blackberry's display screen - it was around here that Lavender's signal disappeared. The agent looked to his left, down an alleyway between two houses that led to an adjacent street where his colleague - a more powerfully-built black man with a bald head and dressed in a light tan business suit and maroon tie, and accessorized with a pair of sunglasses. The gray-suited agent made a gesture to his colleague to come over to his side. "That's around where we lost the commander's signal," The gray-suited agent said as he pointed to the alleyway that moments ago Terado and Lavender entered. The agent's colleague nodded - their superior may be in trouble and this called for an emergency protocol. The gray-suited agent reached into a holster underneath his jacket and drew his sidearm - a Heckler & Koch USP chambered for .45 ACP, while his tan-suited colleague did likewise. Communicating via hand gestures, the two ATHENA division guards prepared to move into the alleyway. It certainly felt good to be back in the open air again, to be under the sun. "Maybe I can't just bury the past..." Lavender heard Terado whisper, making her wonder what was it on his mind, although her F74 smart phone ringing snapped the SEED instructor out of her train of thoughts. "Hello?" Lavender answered the call, and soon discovered that it came from one of the GLADIUS operatives who had been assigned to escort her to Cairo to catch a flight back to Nova Oasis, who was needless to say more than a little edgy when Lavender didn't meet them at the bazaar on the appointed time, prompting them to search the town for her. "Terado?" Lavender rested her hand on the Sentinel's shoulder as she whispered to him. "I'll have to make a move first - my colleagues from OASIS are looking for me... I think it'll be wise for me not to be seen with you lest they get the wrong idea." Lavender spoke somewhat uneasily as she retrieved her tinted glasses from her shirt pocket and put them on. "But we'll meet again, won't we?" She asked. |
