I'm looking at getting a new receiver for my setup and I've been looking at an Onkyo 606, but now I see that there's a 607 out. Does anyone here have any experience with this one to help me decide? Thanks in advance.

I am a Sony man myself however here is the Onko page at Crutchfield and they usually have much better info and pictures on the models that they carry that your average online store.

Thanks for the advice. As you are a Sony man, are there any comparable Sony receivers you would recommend?

I have an Onkyo 605. Every year around this time Onkyo introduces a new model. The 605 cam out in May 2007, the 606 in May 2008, so now it's time for the 607. I scanning over the Crutchfield specs, it looks like the only major diffrence is the number of HDMI inputs. My 605 only has two, the 606 has three, looks like they upped it to 6 HDMI inputs. Same 90 watt, TrueHD & DTS Master Audio decoding, and 7.1 channel support introduced on the 605 model.

Pansonic introduced a new receiver recently, the SA-BX500: 7.1 Channels / 130 Watts x 7 Channels / Auto Speaker Set Up / 3 HDMI inputs, TrueHD & DTS Master Audio decoding. Sounds like a nice receiver. The list price is $799, but Amazon and J&R (jr.com) have it for only $299. Worth a look.

That Panasonic looks alright. I'm still leaning toward the Onkyos though. Mainly trying to decide between the pre-assembled package with a 606 or getting a 607 and assembling the rest of the package myself.

The full package w/ 606

You threw me off with "pre-assembled package"; I never heard it called that. It's usually called Home Theater in a Box, HTIB.

I've read good things about Onkyo's HTIB, and it's a good price. But personally I prefer to put together my own speaker system. I've had Home Theater Direct speakers since 2003, and been very pleased with them. HTD.com

Yeah, I was gonna call it a HTIB, but to me that has nasty connotations that bring the image of a $100 POS setup. lol. I would put together my own, but this price seems pretty good, as I'm not going for top of the line here.
