Coming up Lacking; [Day 1]

She knew that she wasn't supposed to go out alone. Yet, as 'alone' seemed to be how they were determined to leave her, alone she was. It was supposed to be her birthday today.

Relena sighed softly at her own thoughts, childish as they were, and clasped her hands before her as she walked. "Twenty today and still wanting Daddy's approval," the woman mused aloud, for who was there to hear her? "I'm pathetic."

It was true, she knew, and so she neglected to scramble up some instant, mental justification for her emotions. Instead she turned her head as the shuttle launched at the spaceport a few miles behind her. She watched as it became a star in the gathering gloom of dusk, then turned back to her walk. The pebbles at her feet skittered and clacked away with each forward step and Relena knew that if it weren't for the fence beside her, she might easily take a long tumble off the cliff to the beach below.

Looking down at the soft sand, she wished she'd bothered to bring her suit with her, and a beach towel. Though it was still cool, there was nothing better to clear her head than a good swim. There was something about the scent of the sea air that brought with it a mystery of the unknown, a taste of danger a woman of her class wasn't allowed.

The device in her pocket beeped and after a moment of ignoring it, Relena drug the small cell out of her jacket pocket and flipped it open.

Timothy Frederick had all the right connections. His family was old blood, he had a good head for business, was majoring in Law, and wanted to eventually split into politics. He'd often come by to speak with her father, and it was rather obvious that he had a great deal of thought invested into eventually replacing the aging VFM. It was also increasingly obvious that he wanted to take Minister Darlian's daughter along for the ride; an inclination that her parents seemed to think was a good idea.

With one hand, Relena tapped out a message to answer him, rather than giving him a return call. As much as she didn't want to be alone, and as unkind as the thought was, she didn't have the patience to deal with Timothy today. That done, she put her phone away again and finally found the gate that opened to the stairs down to the beach below. Relena opened it and slowly made her way down to the soft mounts of sand below. Tide wouldn't be in for another hour, at least, but when it was the water would lap up at the cliffs.

She wasn't sure why Timothy, or all the others like him, tired her so. It wasn't that they were bad people--none of them were--but that something about their company made her feel... weak. They always wanted something, be it as simple as a smile, to emotions she wasn't ready or wiling to give, to the prestige that her name carried along with it.

Relena wandered down closer to the water and dropped to sit down on the sand. Her jeans would get dirty, but she didn't care, and she pulled her legs to her. Arms wrapped around herself, Relena's chin tucked comfortably against her knees, and she stared out at the glistening waves that stretched out to the horizon. What did she want?

Respect? Consideration? Her parents provided everything for her that she could ever want. She was lucky, damned lucky... they just could never seem to give her the single thing she'd always lacked.

A true friend.

The J.A.P sector encounter had been a joke. Years of training and anticipating a strong enemy had left Heero feeling little more than disappointed at the turnout of OZ suits and needless to say five minutes worth of lackluster battle left him alone in the mesosphere yearning for more.

There was no helping his disappointment and the entry and battle had left his suit with half of his Vernier fuel deposits. Refueling wasn't scheduled until the next morning so he was forced to hide his mobile suit in deep in the depths of the Pacific ocean until refueling. Or at least until he received a new mission. After packing a watertight backpack of necessities which included a palm-pilot of sorts, some small explosives, matches, an electronic detonation rod, four clips of ammo, his gun and a hunting knife he was well on his way. He surfaced in the middle of the ocean, a lone body floating amidst the swelling water. The endless expanse of blue made him feel small, but no smaller than the vast expanse of outer space could make one feel. He rolled onto his back and spread his arms and legs out, floating for a long moment enjoying the weightlessness of his body, comparing it to that of outer space. It was close, but not quite the same.

After a few minutes he spotted a few orbiting satellites and made a rough determination of his position in the ocean before splashing off westward to the shore.

Four hours later he felt the tide strengthening and knew he was getting close. Hand over hand he dragged himself through the water until he felt the waves snatch him and force him forward. He was at the shore. He stopped then, crouching low among the waves, and watched the shoreline. It seemed quiet and deserted... no, there was someone there. Walking down to the sand, then sitting and staring out to sea. A young woman. He lowered himself further into the water until only his eyes and top of his head stuck out.

Has she seen me?

Still crouched low, he managed to sidle back a yard or so before digging his booted feet into the sand to keep the strengthening waves from pushing him forward. Maybe he should dive under and swim a couple hundred yards down the beach until he could find a clear place to emerge.

It was a great plan.

If only he could stop staring.

There was something about this woman sitting alone in the dusk. She seemed familiar but he couldn't seem to pinpoint her identity. She was pretty, but what did he know about women? The only woman he had dealings with these past five years was Helga his Russian hand-to-hand combat trainer and she was hardly the soft and sensitive type. Helga definitely never looked so glum, either.

Maybe I should kill her and put her out of her misery.

A creepy smile crept over his face, though the expression was thankfully hidden beneath the water.

There was something moving in the water, Relena noticed after a moment. At first she thought it might be a fish, and but the splashing was too regular. When it stopped she realized that it was a person. The woman's brows arched in some amount of surprise, and then that helpful, deprecating voice in the back of her head informed her that it was very self-centered to assume that she was the only person ever on this beach. Just because it was usually empty when she came down here didn't mean that it had to be that way.

Whomever it was had stopped still within the water, until all she could see was dark hair matted down with water and a pair of eyes sticking above the water. It was too far away to make out any definite colour or attempt to assign a gender. Even so, a chill began to ran down Relena's sign as the person.. just... stood there. She was beginning to regret having come out here alone.

A fragile smile lit upon her lips and Relena slowly raised one perfectly manicured hand to wave slowly at the person. Maybe they didn't see her? Try as she might, Relena couldn't come up with any reason that a sane person would stay out there like that. Unless they were somehow scared of her? There was no question in her mind that she'd been seen, at any rate. "Hello?" She tried.

Damn.

Heero had really wanted to avoid this. When the woman WAVED at him and politely greeted him he knew he would have to kill her. That was just more work for him. He would have to kill her then find somewhere to ditch the body and then clean up the evidence of the murder, etc. etc. After swimming against the current for four hours anyone would be a little tired, and even super soldier Heero was feeling slightly fatigued. Good thing she looked utterly helpless. That would make things easier.

He planted his feet against the sandy bottom and pushed himself to a full stand. Had this been five years before he would have stood just over five feet tall but puberty was a magical thing and now he towered a whopping five foot eight. Okay, so it wasn't much but according to Dr. J it was quite impressive considering his Japanese heritage. At first feeling the full gravity of Earth tugging at his limbs was disorienting and he nearly stumbled when the waves crashed roughly against the backs of his legs. A moment later he righted himself then continued to trudge through the surf towards the girl.

He wasn't much of a people person so the idea of waving back or shouting a pleasant greeting to her to keep her from being alarmed never crossed his mind.

He was halfway across the beach now and closing in on her. One hand lifted to push his soggy bangs out of his face while the other snaked around to the waterproof backpack to retrieve the hunting knife strapped loosely against the outside.

Why wasn't he responding to her? Relena scrambled to her feet as he trudged up through the shallows, and knew now that it was definitely a "him." Also, that he was some sort of pilot--had there been an accident? The suit he was wearing was enough to indicate that he'd come in from outerspace, but she hadn't seen any crash--normally a site would be crawling with rescue operatives by now.

Then he stumbled as he was coming up and concern outweighed the caution. "Are you okay?" she asked and slipped her cellphone out of her pocket in the same breath. "Are you with Oz? Or maybe Orion Shuttles? They're not too far away..."

With one hand she flipped her cellphone open and punched the speed-dial emergency line, "If you're hurt, you really ought to sit down, I can have them send an ambulance."

"Are you okay? Are you with Oz? Or maybe Orion Shuttles? They're not too far away..."

Heero's back straightened at the mention of OZ and he reflexively looked in the direction of the OZ launch sector nearby as if a fleet of Leos were to descend upon him at the mere mention of the enemy force. Was this young woman with the enemy? She may have been the wife of an enemy soldier, or the daughter of a General.

Which really meant he would have to get rid of her.

He continued his crossing of the sand unhindered and unsheathed the knife from its scabbard.

"If you're hurt, you really ought to sit down, I can have them send an ambulance."

He was only ten feet away now, and upon seeing the phone in her hand he fell into a quick dash and ran up on her at startling speed. Within moments the phone was knocked from her hand and his knife was at her throat, pressed firmly at the base of her silky little neck.

"I'm sorry, but I can't let you live. You are a victim of circumstance..." his voice was low and quiet next to her ear. One arm had snaked quick as a viper around her waist to hold her still while the other was lifted to her neck holding the knife stiff and motionless. He breathed out slowly against her ear and prepared to drag the knife across her throat when a small voice sounded from somewhere nearby.

"911, what is your emergency?"

Heero couldn't help but blink. He hesitated and looked down at the phone with disdain. She had dialed an emergency. Her phone looked expensive. Surely it had GPS positioning capabilities, which meant that right now a satellite from above was pinpointing their exact coordination to relay to the military police.

He couldn't kill her. There would be evidence, surely. He couldn't hide her before the police would find them, and if the coastline increased their guard he would never be able to come back to return to his mobile suit. But if he let her go she would just tell the police what he looked like and where he had come from and that would yield the same results.

He had never trained for this scenario.

He would just have to take her with him. It wasn't the best option but it would get him away from the police and buy him some time to think of how to get rid of her.

He narrowed his eyes in silent confirmation and tightened his grip around her waist. "You're coming with me. Don't say a word, or your trip ends here..." He pulled the knife away from the woman's throat, slid it effortlessly back into his backpack and forced his hand over the girl's mouth while pulling her backward towards some nearby docks that would hopefully provide a little bit of cover.

She screamed--it was a gut reaction, really, to being jerked around with a knife drawn. The operator had to have heard it, but Relena wasn't aware of the phone anymore, or the sound of another shuttle at the nearby station. Her awareness was centered on the metal at her throat and the whisper against her ear. Manicured, expensive fingers clawed at the water-logged fabric of his suit, wanting to tug his arm away from her, but the rest of her body remained very, very still.

Relena's eyes, closed in fear, began to peek open when she realized that she wasn't dead. As much as she was grateful, she also had to wonder why the man had hesitated. She opened her mouth to speak just as he once again gave her an order. Not knowing what else to do, her mouth snapped shut and then his hand was over it.

She stumbled to follow him, but he was dragging her backward and her feet caught and stumbled in the sand. All in all, he was leaving quite the trail. Distantly, she could hear the operator asking questions on the other end, and then the line went dead. A moment later, it began to ring as the operator called back.

A trail was indeed left but Heero wasn't thinking about it. His mind was racing in every direction. His mobile suit, his ultimate mission, this girl and her significance, and ultimately his obvious weakness to have hesitated in killing her. His fingers trembled for the first time and his heart angrily pounded against his rib cage as he forced the woman over to the docks. He needed to get out of here. He needed time to clear his head.

This wasn't how things were supposed to happen.

He was supposed to come to Earth undetected, but that goal had been thwarted by the arrival of Leos in the atmosphere. That was fine- he could handle that. He had swam four hours from the middle of nowhere to this beach without incident. Fine. But now he had found himself kidnapping someone he didn't even know and risking everything: the mission, his life, and the secrecy of the operation.

How could he have fucked up so bad in less than a day?

He was acting on impulse now, hoping that some of the chaos would eventually work itself out. In the meantime his initial action was to get the hell off of this beach, get to a safe place then figure out what to do with this woman.

The docks were low and wouldn't provide much cover. The sound of a helicopter from somewhere nearby made him visibly flinch. He would need a vehicle.

Being less than gentle he maneuvered himself and the woman in his clutches up a bank and to the top of the dock which thankfully was abandoned at the moment. It seemed to be a civilian fishing pier and boat launching ramp. A small parking lot was just at the end of it, littered with various trucks and tailgates left behind by the now absent boaters.

He needed one of those cars.

And just as the thought came to him one appeared. A small white pick-up truck rolled in to the parking lot driven by an borderline elderly man. That would do.

Without a word he spun the girl roughly around to face him and attempted to heft her over his shoulder.

Her mind was racing, frantic and screaming, as she was dragged toward the dock. Heart thudding against her chest, all thought was completely gone but for the screaming notion of "I'M GOING TO DIE." He drug her up the beach, toward the pier, and up to the wooden slats above. It was at this point that it occurred to her to fight back.

Relena began to twist a little, purposefully dragging her heels a little harder. Now that the sand was behind them, this was far more difficult to do than it might have been a moment before. The rubber soles of her sneakers slipped and provided her with little foot hold to do anything against the man's obvious strength.

A little white truck puttered into the parking lot, and the man twisted her around in his arms. In an instant, her hand shot up toward his cheek, and her butler's old words of advice came back to mind. He'd given her this lecture a thousand times, and yet she'd never thought she'd have to use it. Her knee rose forcibly toward's the man's crotch, and then she twisted and tried to run away.

SLAP!

Ouch.

His cheek burned bright red as it was struck by her hand. He released her with one arm to reflexively grab the place he was struck. It was just enough to let her pull back and jab him in the crotch with her leg.

And despite five years of hand-to-hand combat with Helga, Heero fell victim to the oldest trick in the book.

Damn.

He doubled over and let her go as a sharp pain raced up his torso causing silver blobs to flood into his line of vision, clouding the dusky beach setting for a long moment. He could hear the truck approaching and forced himself to straighten, blinking a few times in attempt to focus.

This was atrocious. If Dr. J were here he would have died of disappointment. He peered off in the direction of the retreating woman and sighed. Why hadn't he just killed her?

No time for that now. Just as he was about to have a deep, depressing inner monologue about how he was a flawed soldier and not worthy of this mission when his thoughts were interrupted by the screeching of tires. Then he was knocked off of his feet. The pain to his crotch was suddenly replicated against his side as the pick-up truck ran right into him, sending him flying ten feet forward before landing on the asphalt in a bone-cracking roll. He stopped nearly twenty feet away near the edge of the parking lot.

He was stunned. One instant he was standing, the next he was laying in a heap on the ground.

And he was pissed off.

He rolled to his back and stared up at the sky, evaluating his body's status. Fingers: check. Arm and legs intact and mobile: check. Road rash- affirmative.

Heero grunted and pulled himself to his feet, wobbling only slightly as a sudden sprain made itself obvious to him with the addition of pressure to his left foot.

A middle-aged man with sandy brown hair had gotten out of his truck and was staring at him in horror, having not expected him to get up from being his by a car. But this is Heero Yuy we're talking about.

"M'am, are you hurt?" The guy called after the kidnapped woman.
