Over at Terragensis there is a place of worship terrain competition at the moment. As I have a cultist band I thought "Cooool" as I dont have any terrain for them. The problem 'The Children of Goodness' is a pesudo-Christian cult and I though modelling that kind of thing a bit dull. But as 90% of the faction wear black robes with out symbols they can be pressed into a whole range of other roles/cults. Basically I am looking for some inspiration for a terrain piece - and if I get as far as finishing it then I will credit anyones idea's I borrow. :P

So what cults do you have wandering your Post Apoc wastelands? What are their ethos? What do they worship? How do they respond to other factions?

One idea is a cult worshipping a old nuke warhead. In the STALKER pc game the Monolith cultists worship the wish granter monolith at the centre of the zone and pray to a sculpture of it made from house hold junk.

My own faction the Children of Goodness beleive that St Duncan lead them through the firestorm wrath of God. He lead them to a stadium where they flourished in the early days. They where later driven out by a local enclave.

The cult worship God but its not clear which one. They also worship St Duncan who led them to safety. As they where saved anyone who isnt in the cult is certainly from hell or damned to go there - a trip the cult like to help them to make. St Gladys is worshipped too and is pictured as a dancing lady in a black bonnet and dress carring a basket. She hands out deliverance from God and St Duncan (the cultists use drug laced toffee's in their rituals). When speading the "word" they hand out leaflets and toffee's in a attempt to recruit - sorry save a soul. Any resemblance to a certain football team and its ethos is purely coincidental :D

Another set of culties I have is the Little Sisters of Mercy - again a christain cult. These are GZG Nuns with Guns. Nuns in the ruins of the old world had to become super tough or die. They still perform all the usual nunly duties but thay also kick ass. The convent is based at Bittannia Bunker City - and when ever the Nuns go out into the wastes to do acts of goodness the city feels obliged to supply a section of troops as a escort/bodygaurd.

I quite like one of the ideas that was put forward in one of the 'waste world' books - 'the church of christ, without christ'. The hero stumbles across this old church, with a crazy old priest living in there who has torn all the jesuses (jesi?) off the crosses and mutters about why any religion would need some loser who's weak enough to get himself hung on a cross and not save all the people at the end of time. (I guess he only believed in the old testament part of the bible then...)

I could see that this would be too controvertial to use and may offend certain people, but I still thought it was an interesting and different PA religion

See the add at the bottom of the page "Social Networkoing for Followers of the Christian Faith" :D :D :D

Sorry.... well, what about a bunch of Elvis worshipers, they all view him as a prophet as he prophesied that the end of the world was coming (he sang alot of songs, surely one has something to do with fire or burning) and they pray he'll come back.
Though that would be better suited if the cultists all have 'greaser' haircuts and bell bottoms.

A peace cult, peace through arms.... they all worship massive posters of the Beatles, with their hierarchy taking the name of the four members (of five depending on your needs).

I've got the Doomspeakers in my setting, they run around sprouting stuff about the end of the world (they're a little late.... :D ), but most of them are fronts to slavers or 'eyes' for gang raids.

Yeah - I noticed the god botherer adverts. :D :D I am interested what will come up later on in this thread! :D

Other idea's popped into my fevered mind.

First is the Hell Born - a faction based around a Satanic cult (cue ads for Satanists?) from the Jon Shannow novels. They belevie that as no angels turned up at the end of the world then Satan must have won. Satan is revered as "good" and anything to do with God/Christianity as "Evil" (at least in there eyes). These guys are big on drinking blood and human sacrifice. Any terrain is also big on three sixes.

Second idea is a technology or machine cult. Worshipping machines and human sacrfice. Lots of junked vehicles to make the altar and maybe some sort of effigy made from random pre-end machine bits.

Third idea was similar to the Elvis cult - but one that worships the METAL and Rock Gods. I see a area fenced off with corrigated iron covered with looted metal posters. A sound system run off a generator that plays old CD's of the Gods voices and maybe a electric guitar (to be played by the high priest) are also musts. Robes that feature alot of leather and studs are also popular! :D

Fourth up was some sort of Shamanic worshipping site. This would have some sort of totem pole that might also incorporate various electronic bits and peices. I am thinking a stone circle built from recycled rubble too and maybe some plants. Skulls will feature heavily and maybe collected heads.

Fifth up was a simlar idea to the fourth - but with witches.

There is also some inspiration from movies too - the New Barabrians features the Templars. These bad guys are a cult that kill all humans in a effort to finish off god's work in destroying humanity. Oh - you can only join if you are male...and you like men!

I really like the Hell Born idea, very cool.

Metal Heads is another I'd be inclined to give a go, plus, you can use any pre-built/painted gangers in your collection, as long as they had the 80's punk rock look ;)

The Templars... well, when in Rome.... for some reason the imagery for me of these guys is like a Brotherhood of Steel but with added tabards(sp?).

EDIT: If you're looking for icon, Jesus-on-a-cross type imagery, what about a group that worships human strength and stamina, the wasteland is the ultimate survival of the fittest test. They have the classic human naked form with the extra arms on a circle.

I always knew I was a Saint, it's great news to have it confirmed, though I don't remember the incident in question!

During the second world war, they had travelling churches, built on the backs on trucks, so that the troops could to a church service whereever they happened to be. Maybe you could build something similiar. With the truck parked and the back opened out as the altar, pulpit and communion rail, and with some benches arranged around it. pretty easy to do and can be used in all sorts of scenarios, breaking up the mission, converting the masses, etc.

Duncan (saint)

Saint Duncan has an brilliant idea (you're a saint, it's to be expected :D ), that'd make your entry a very unique one (providing you don't go all GW on it), and make for a fantastic models set!!

I reckon you're on a winner here Dan!

You havent done it - its a history of a time to come! :D

Actually the truck idea is great. I like it. Plus it will fit both the Children of Goodness and Little Sisters of Mercy. I also have some mad monks some place unpainted. It would suit them too.

I was planning the tech cultists in my head too. I need to check on how many old toy cars are left. I was thinking of "Car Henge!" :D

I have decided to have a crack at a portable altar idea - thanks St Duncan! :D

See Portable Altar thread

However keep your ideas coming as I am sure they will inspire someone here to have go - or at least for me to knock some more models up!

Dags did a Brothers of St Ben the Dyslexic.

Lots of foundry monks converted.

"Car Henge" is a great idea

they went off in search of doG hence the large number of hounds in the gang and the Dyslexic joke. (which is about a guy who can't spell)

the Nuke worship is from Planet of the Apes 3 or 4, also a short story in 2000AD many years ago with a cruise missile.

The book of the Postaman had them almost worshiping a supercomputer (which was a bit Wizard of Oz trickery)

I was going to go for just single cars for the board - but I have been toying with the idea of car cross peices to. Some one has actually built them! bah!

I knicked the idea from the Mutiod Waste Company who had a arch sculpture made of cars - and a another made from ex- russian BMP APCs!

Want some odd inspiration for your cults? Check out this real life cult:

Jon Frum

Real life is often odder than fiction! :D So I guess a isolated community in a PA world could worship pretty much anything or anyone who arrived helped them.

Cargo cults are a really odd bunch - but visually really good stock for cults as it mixes vodooish trappings with various symbology from the 'modern' world - IIRC there was a bunch somewhere who had a seaplane shaped war cannoe?!? (Certainly there was a bunch with a almost to scale carved plane; may have made up the cannoe part - cant remember clearly)
