stackable mountains; DIY scenery

So the idea is to make some mountains/hills that are easy stackable.
When I started out making scenery most important was that it looked good.
Nowadays I have so many scenery pieces that stack-ability is higher on the priority list...

Started out building the rough shape in styrofoam connected with toothpicks.

Then tore a rib cardboard box to pieces and crumbled them up.
Hot glued these pieces on top of the styrofoam shape (not ON the styrofoam)

Covered the outside, not inside.

Posted Image

When the outside was covered I took away the toothpicks and the styrofoam blocks.
I want only the shell, the outside, of the mountain. Like this I can stack smaller versions inside (or bigger on top of it).

Reinforced the rims with an other layer of cardboard.

For scale.

Great idea. I like where this is going. I too have storage problems so stackable hills sound a great idea.

Not yet in the painting stage yet Tinker.
First some more building to do.
Yesterday evening I added some different sort of thick cardboard to the build.
To make it stronger, ad stability (flat surface for the mini's) and hide some of the rib texture.

Posted Image

Then I started building a bigger cave on top of the previous 'finished' one.
Added some styrofoam blocks with toothpicks or loosely taped some to the underlaying mountain.
Posted Image

And started covering this larger shape with rib cardboard again, as I did with the first one. (not finished on the picture)
So logically this second 'shell' should fit easily on the first shell/mountain.

Etc...or to be continued

i made 4 of them. Covered the cardboard in one (lazy) layer of packaging paper and PVA.
Other layers (glue and sand, paint) will follow so I'm sure the result will be strong enough.

The second one (the biggest) I made on top of the first one, these two fit perfectly.
But then I wanted to build a smaller one inside the first one, this did not work. I had to guess the shape and made it to big.
A fourth one I build even smaller to make sure it fitted.

I should have started with the smallest one and then build up on this one ... oh well, they all still fit inside the box, that's the most important thing.

Here I added some details in styrofoam and cork bits (first hot glue then some more PVA)

I am still doubting whether I should go for the usual grey paint-sceme or try something new namely desert colors, which probably would fit better my PA battle mat color (?).

Looking good. I like the storage ideas.

I would go with desert colours. Not only will it match your battle mat, it is more versatile for other games/settings. You could do exposed rock in grey here and there to break up the sand colour.

i have some wall filler in a small bucket so I smeared some at the sides to suggest rock texture.
The top layers I covert in PVA glue and sifted some cement powder on it , this is smaller grained then sand.

When this was almost dry (lack of patience) I painted everything black with acrylic wall paint.
When this was almost dry (see above) I sprayed some of the red-brown/terracotta (I use for rust) at the sides (rock) and some grey on top (I have no sand colored spray)

Posted Image

Since I have no spray I painted sand color on top
Posted Image

At the side I stippled some 'chocolate brown'.
Posted Image

Then repeated these colors again, using the same brush and dry brush/stippling blending the colors.
Looks like toasted bread with egg and brown sugar (we call: wentel-teefjes)
Posted Image

Finished this part with a dry brush 'off white' (ivory ?)
Posted Image

Now for the hardest part... doing nothing...letting it dry ...

Next up: I will need to mix up a big batch of brown wash for these ones !

Looking good. I too suffer from the impatience of waiting for stuff to dry.

Almost the last step, the washes.

Made them myself, buying them for a project this scale would be to expensive.
Started out with a bottom layer of acrylic MAT varnish (some people use acrylic polish such as Pledge but this shines and I did not want a shiny finish)
Added about 4 times this amount of water. If you want to store your wash in a bottle for some time use 'distilled water' or it can go stale.
Some drops of dish washing liquid to help it spread even.
Added a gulp of 'ecocline' (don't really know the differences between 'ecocline' and inkt guess it is about the same but more watered down). You can also add inkt or whatever paint you got.
And then mixed it up gently and simply splashed it all over the model.

The wash turned out to be to subtle, I did not ad not enough inkt. Could have giving it an other layer. Maybe later ?

Next up,I will post some pictures in the 'Terrain' section.

(by then I will have added some green wash and some vegetation, not much, it is supposed to be dessert after all)

Nice. I may have to try this for home made washes.
