Gotham/Art Deco style partly ruined building

Some day I would like to build a partly ruined Gotham/Art Deco styled building.

You know... one off those projects actually too large to bite off in one piece.
So... slowly, bit by bit, I hope to be taking on small portions of it in this post.

To start off, looked for some inspiration on the web. This is what I found until now.
If you got any examples, feel free to post them here, thanks.

Art Deco seems like a lot off phallic shapes and some guys holding balls...

Earlier than Art Deco, but still an icon:

I don't know if it would be of interest, but I think there were some Art Deco buildings done by gamers on the old terragenisis site. I'd search and link them, but don't know how to do it from my phone. Anyway, might be worth a look.

Thanks for the info guy's !

Ah the old TerraGenesis site...
Started out there as a scratch model builder, not yet under the name 'Bobscene' but in those days 'BobenViktor' cause I worked together with my the 13 year old son then.
You can find our work in the 'Showcase' section (especially on page 2) also put up some WIP's there.

http://www.terragenesis.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9316&lp=96044

Anyway, the 'search function' does not seem to work and there is a lot of material on that site, so hard to find anything.
But thanks for the tip Irisherb, it was a long time since I took a look at that site and still it does contain tons of information I have not 'processed' yet.

Ha ! Just re-read some of the articles I posted then at TG and guess what...got some friendly reactions, those days, from a chap calling himself 'mattblackgod'...
So we met before !

Ha ha. Our paths have crossed before in the Internet wastelands.

Good luck with the Art Deco look. It should look great and a change from the usual ruins.

As usual I start rummaging in my collection of junk (this time mostly packaging) see which parts fit the bill.
Man I fell in love with the green packaging the moment I saw it, I had to buy it.
My wife did not understand why, me a notorious meat eater, brought home some tofu.
(actually I was ok, marinade it in chili sauce and then grilled it)

Yow y 'all !

Small update.

Started to work at the back, a bit neglected until now. Not very impressive, need to ad some more shapes (the round arches are CD box parts).
Decided not to make it as a ruin, mainly cause this would mean more interior detailing.
I want to have more detail (some eagles ? man holding balls ? skulls ?) but mainly on the out-side.
So I had to cut some big holes is the back for playability.

This looks like no progress, but this time what you see is actually cut and glued into place.
I will try to make the tower(s) come apart cause of stockage and modular reasons.

Yes sir,

it does starting to take shape.
First I collect the pieces I want to use but then a lot off time is spend on doubting.
Building like this you only get one chance to cut a piece. So before cutting and clueing I have to ponder questions as to playability, modularity and being able to store it all.
So I made it that the whole thing can come apart in 2 big towers and the 2 smaller 'decorative side towers'.
Don 't know if I mentioned before but the main form of the ground floor is a square plastic flowerpot, the second floor (purple thing) is some sort of basket which held flower bulbs in the shop. They fitted perfectly on top of each other.

Anyway, as can be seen on the pictures I started decorating. But I am not really happy with the result.
First it does not look like Art Deco (not really a problem, go with the flow, it looks more like something out of a Judge Dredd comic, also nice),
Second, the level of detail is too much compared to the rest. It will, either, force me to add more details to the rest of the buiild or to re-do the decoration on these.
But I am reluctant to re-do things, in general, so I'm afraid this experiment with engraving/embossing heavy aluminium foil will lead to even more detailing/delay on the rest of the build...

ps to engrave the thick foil (used for dinner plates or BBQ) I use a pencil or a sharpened wooden dowel (or the sharpened back of a brush in my case) Put some newspapers under it. You can draw/push lines free-hand or put all kind of textures under it (like I did with some gears f.i.). The 3 skulls on top I did not make, there some kind of cheap plastic kids pendant. Forgot which kid I stole it from...

Yeah I hate reworking too.

The foil covered tower looks great.

Thanks MBG

here 's the second one. I think it worked out better cause I had some more ideas on what to use as 'decorative motives'.

On the first one I just did some semi-random doodling. This time I found inspiration in the apocalypse and used figures such as: nuclear mushroom, bio hazard sign or shapes of rockets/bombs,...

As you can see on the foto they are designed to be used as 'stand alone' terrain also, they will not be permanently attached to the building.

The tin foil is a trick I learned from my grandfather.

in his spare time he liked to make things also, sculpting or painting mainly.
When he and his wife where too old to cook, they brought ready made food at his home delivered in tin foil plates (divided in 3 parts= 1 part meat, 1 potatoes and 1 vegetables). When finishing his plates he used to wash and draw on them and then smeared black shoe polish on it (to 'weather' it).

Here is a link to a video clip i made based on some of his paintings.
(made 'the music' also, if you can call it that).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmvHzl_hluw

i also include a picture of the latest stage of the build.
It is the 5th (also removable) and final part.

Just some more decoration/detailing and the build is finished.

Ciao,
and thanks for the comment !

Tanx for the encouraging words MBG

Finished the build.

Some more minor detailing inside. 2 milk carton lids as doors.
White plastic spoon handles besides the gate.
A cast of wings above the entrance.

Posted Image

Top floor with some technical parts.
The red shapes are cut in halve bread bag clasps.

Posted Image

I spend a lot of time searching for my skull moulds, could not find them
So I had to do with the skull cast left overs I had laying about.

Posted Image

The green tinghy at the bottom of the build is a printer cartridge cap, thought it looked like a sci-fi window or some sort of intercom.

Hope to do the priming tomorrow.

Ciao !
