It's the Christmas Waste Challenge!

Pringles tubes, cracker toys, wrapping paper rolls, party poppers, food trays.... There's no doubt about it, Christmas is a GOLD MINE of scrap for making terrain!

So here's a challenge- how much of this year's seasonal waste can you turn into beautiful scenery? At Oakbound Studio we're running the challenge across a couple of forums and pages and want to see your innovative creations. The most original scenery we see by the end of January will get a special prize, so get creating! Post your submissions below, link to your blog, or tag @Oakbound Studio in any facebook post so we spot it. Happy hunting.

Ok I'm in,

I started with some cardboard, any packaging cardboard will do.
Then I took some (hot) glue and made some sort of wall with it.
As a next step I covered the whole thing in tinfoil and clear tape.

I had a wall section but added a corner section.
So this is the plan,
I torn and crumbled up the x-mas packaging paper and papier maché-d it with 50°/o water wood glue mix to the wall (the tinfoil and clear tape are to prevent te glue sticking to the 'model'. I found out that the thin foil was not necessary the tape was sufficient)
So like this I can reproduce the two sections (wall and corner) using the originals as a 'mold'.
Why should I do this ? Cause with glue gun and cardboard I can make these sections faster than with the 3 layers of papier maché technique (and sturdier)
The main advantage is that the result will be stackable (important for me because I am running out of cupboard space) and easy to transport.

I'l post some more if painted and detailed.

Until then,
ciao,

Little side-track,

in instead of building an 'original' and multiplying it, it's easier to use an existing shape.
The shapes I found in a gift for my son (not given by me) a beer game with fluorescent cups, I only used the transparant plastic packaging.
Beer is big in Belgium.
In the back, primer-painted grey, you can see the details I've build to give the build some...euh...detail.

So here it is finished my contribution to the x-mas challenge.

The battle mat, the building in the back, the cars and sandbags I made before.
Everything else was made with x-mas packaging paper and cardboard.
The painted mini' s are by courtesy of M.B.G.

The tents where a very quick build, they took only half hour to papier maché and another half, or so, to paint.
I still got the original plastic packaging shape so if I want I could make as many as I want.

If you want your gaming table to be filled with fast build, cheap to make and stackable scenery, this is the way to go.

I'm really surprised at how strong 3 layers of papier maché with 50 °/o wood glue/water can be.
Feels like flexible plastic. What also strengthened it is that at the edges, when glueing the paper, I folded the paper. So at the edges there are more layers so the build is reinforced at that point.

It all fits inside a small shoe box.

What do you think ?
