So I started painting, the metal tech parts first (cause some 'sand color' will come on top especially around the edges). Gave these some shades of grey ![]() Then dry brushed most of the surface with light sand colors. After this it got washed (a bit acryl paint + biggest part water) with darker (brown+black) colors ![]() Each time I load my brush I pick up slightly different colors so that the result will be nuanced. A food container like this, with the lid on, functions as my 'wet pallet' for this project. ![]() Added lead color to the metal and extra black dry brush and wash for some tech parts (to create some depth). When this was dry I put in some rust wash (2 different colors eventually). My rust wash goes on very thick then I wipe the excess off with a cloth) ![]() Here I added some 'hazard stripes' to the tech parts (maybe nuclear missile launching pads ?). And some copper color to small details (not visible on the picture). I also changed the color of the 'sick skin part' but am not happy with it and will change it again. ![]() Also next up is the painting of the lake (not sure if this will work out ok). I also primed black and cut up the road sections these are ready for paint also. Luckely I mix my paint and washes myself, those small pre-mixed ones would be to expensive on this scale. Stay tuned for more rock 'n paint ! Edited by Bobscene, Sep 30 2017, 02:05 PM.

So here you have it... finished ! (well..on the last foto I still have to cut the edges, but this is done by now) The color of the lake was a problem. First I had it covered completely with green paint but this was to radical, stood out like a sore thumb, so I scraped away most of the green paint so again some brown would be visible. When the green was dry I covered it with transparant silicone. For this I cut away the teeth of a plastic knife so I had a tool to smoothen the surface (remember to soak your tools in soap/water first). To finish off the water effect I tapped the surface with a spoon to create ripples in the water. I dry-brushed the crest of these waves with some light green to create some depth (with the green on the bottom). ![]() The road sections were a quick paint, after priming black, dry brushed some sorts of lighter grey, then some sand color on the edges to mach the surrounding mat. And a wash of dark brown and black. ![]() First I was not sure on how good they would lay flat cause they only got one layer of caulk. This turned out better then two layers, they are very flexible and less caulk means less warping, I hope, contact me in one year if you want to know about that for sure. ![]() Much happier with the new flesh colors on the 'sick skin earth'. ![]() ![]() C's ad Q's always welcome and if you want to see (much) more foto's (+ got some new mini 's !) you can go to the 'Terrain' section... Sweet work. I love the roads. That mat looks great. There is going to be some good battles on that mat. Great tutorial, thanks. I need to make one when I find room and the time. |

Tanx your Warlordship, I'm happy with the result also. Small appendix: the silicone (used for the lake) does not take paint very well. The light green highlights on the waves will vanish eventually. Next time (?) I will look for clear transparant paintable silicone. Or I could try spraying transparant plastic primer en re-paint. But this is such a small detail don 't think I will bother... Which reminds me, if you should try a caulk mat, remember to buy the caulk that say's 'paintable', cause non-paintable caulk also exists (this I got right, luckily). Bonus: The mat can be used in everyday life also. ![]() |

Thanks for the tip Bob. It would be typical of me to get the none paintable kind.
