Babylon's Burning Nostalgia Project

Ok, so this mighty be something of a gaming-mid-life-crisis project, but I blame a mate's Oldhammer Nostalgia project for giving me the idea. Whilst he goes all gooey-eyed over beaky marines and the 2nd Edition 40K starter set I do it over Babylon's Burning. What now? You've not heard of it?
Back in 2004(?), Hetzerdog Trading put out a rules-set called Babylons's Burning. It was a PA combat simulator, aimed at 'warband' level battles of 10-30 figures, arranged into roughly 4-8 man squads. They had a figure range, with 8 packs, and eventually it all crumbled when they got shafted by their figure manufacturer...

Back in the day, I never bought anything from the range, but always fantasized about having a force or two.

It's an idea that keeps coming back. 12 years, a PhD, marriage and house later... and I still go back to the BB fluff everytime I want some PA inspiration. For the last few years, it's not helped too much as my WinterPAoc project has been all about small groups trying to get by in a world that's slowly dying. Not much chance for large groups to coalesce there. After playing The Last of Us, and partly inspired by the Across The Dead Earth demo board, my mind has slowly be shifting away from WinterApoc being a bleak world slowly slipping away into the ash-clogged future of a dying world and more into a conventional world in winter, where lots of folks just happened to have died. And I’m back into a world where the BB background makes sense… And it’s been working on me again…!

So the plan is to make a couple of Babylon’s Burning inspired forces. I’ve been having a clear-out of various projects, so have salvaged a number of figures from other projects which I am planning to strip and re-use. Currently I am planning to do a couple of forces, set in the USA:

*An Enclave – based off TAG Vietnam and modern figures. Guessing they dug out a cache of cold-war surplus military supplies. The plan is to do the fatigues a non-military colour – maybe black, or dark blue to give that ‘We looted a corporate uniform supplier’ look. Not sure if it citizens militia will be semi uniformed or completely in civies as per the originals. Maybe both.

*A Mob – Triad or Yakuza themed, to make use of the various oriental martial arts figures and actually get them onto the table. Plus most of the Dixon Yakuza look scruffier than the suited Mafioso types on the market.

*Scavs – using the Copplestone castings/grenadier range + some of the Across the dead earth figures.

*Gang – manily topless folks, based around the across the dead earth Red Claw gang + a few others. These guys are likely to be a bit too small a force to actually be playable, so may act as allies for one of the other forces.

I’m also planning to do a few ‘token’ forces – gas masked cultists, using the original BB gas-mask culties & the pulp figures gas masked culties; possible a second mob using the Spectre Cartel figures and finally 10 or so Mercenaries of some sort….

With a little one on the way – this might never happen… But, on the other hand, I might need something to inspire me through all those sleepless nights! So Far I have figures to get started on the Enclave, Scavs, Triad and Gang, so I'll post up previews of those later/in the next few days...

Sounds a good start. I need to get to the post office!

BB had a great background and set of factions. It was a shame the rules where over complex and over detailed. A small game could take well over 4 hours. There was a lot of table checks and lethal if your force had automatic weapons. None of this line up and charge lark like 40K. You needed cover, lots of cover. Get caught in the open and you where dead. Tactics and luck helped. I did like them though. These days I like games that take 1 to 2 hours.

In one game a 6 man gang of cultists with a couple of automatic weapons ambushed a Enclave patrol twice their number. The Enclave where elite had body armour and semi automatic weapons. Most of the patrol was downed in the first turn. The game lasted two turns with no Cult casualties. BB is lethal.

What rules are you going to use? Stick with BB or something a little quicker to play?

Lol - no rush on the figures... I have half of China town to paint/repaint first.

Rules wise... Probably At Close Quarters/A good day to die as they are squad based skirmish catering to a range of force types and qualities. I did a lot of the potential groundwork for my BritApoc project.
Other options are Atomic Cafe or possibly even skank!

Ok, so I said I had some stuff salvaged from other projects, so I thought I'd get started by showing things off. Most of the painted figures will get stripped and repainted - even the triad will be getting a bit of paintwork to grunge them up:

The current idea is to bolster the number of vietnam era figures, and use the models in the second picture to add a bit more rag-tag diversity. Thinking blue fatigues, green webbing, and probably uniform black(?) tee shirts. Not sure whether to keep Nam era helmet covers or replace them with something else at this stage.
The poorly armed folks in the 3rd picture will be some sort of civillian militia as opposed to regular enclave soldiers. Poor skills and bad ammo rolls. although they have a few SMGs to give them something of a punch, most of these are WW2 era museum peices and I am toying with having them automatically fail ammo rolls. They might have uniform trousers but wildly varied T-shhirts in a range of colours...

'Red Claw' gang

Going for a 'clothes are for whimps' vibe here it would appear. A bit of an odd gang this one, as it's got a couple of heavy weapons and then quite a lot of rubbish. Going to probably add some of the grenadier future gangers...

So... lots of figures! Good potential for this force, just with what I already have. There is a pre-ponderance of unarmed and melee guys which I think will need thinning out - the Kung Fu guys in the first picture for example. There are also a few who are much more Yakuza than triad, so they'll probably go as well...

Great selection of figures.

You could use the poorly armed as Street gangs or the milita as a scavenger band.

I recall the BB factions using coloured rags as identification. You could sculpt arm bands on them.

Cheers guys :)

Not really a proper update, but I've worked out my Triad force composition....

1 Red pole (leader), 2 enforcers (officers) and 2 runners

2x units of '49'er initiated members (Veterans)
Posted Image
Posted Image

2x units of Blue Lantern uninitiated members (green and average experience). This will have a couple more figures added once my spectre order arrives

Not sure on points costs yet - if I don't use BB to play, it's something of a moot point anyway...
Any have any suggestions for a triad medic?

Nice selection.

Points wise you could see what matches the quality of the figures. Not sure how to spin things like weapons if using different rules.

For a medic I would find a suited figure. I would see them as a struck off GP.

'The Cavalry'
In the immediate aftermath of some of the first few impacts FEMA agent David Jary found himself responsible for the whole of Jackson County, Oregon, with only 2 patrolmen from the Medford PD seconded to help. In a short amount of time, he managed to rally local support to form an 'Auxiliary Pioneer Corp' to start clearing roads and contain wild fires. The decision was quickly made to comandeer a local industrial clothing supply warehouse to uniform his volunteers, as their civilian clothing was often unsuitable and in many cases rapidly turning to rags. The predominant colour in the warehouse was navy blue; and the blue clad men and women rushing to people's aid soon earned them the nickname of 'the cavalry'. As time went on and society collapsed further, Jary decided to arm his people using several cold war era weapons caches. Originally intended for the aftermath of a nuclear war with the Soviet union, the weapons were often older than the volunteers parents, but they did the job. Over time, the cavalry found themselves acting more as peacekeepers and guardians than pioneers, and the last fuel for their heavy plant was used in fortifying a highways depot between Medford and Ashland to act as their home base.

"The Cavalry. Why you asking me about those cryptofascistic abortions and their death squads? You do know that this whole thing is a FEMA set up right? The meteor, the radioactive debris, everything. Its all so they and their New World Order paymasters can take over. They planned it all. How else did Jary get so many 'volunteers' so quickly? They were all sleeper agents man. Wake up! And what kind of a name are 'Auxiliary Pioneers'. That sound like a group of people looking to help folks? Pioneers are a military unit. Where do you think they got the weapons and uniforms? A preplaned FEMA cache. If they were supposed to be managing and responding to the "emergency", then why were they imposing martial law? Where were the police? Where were the national guard?
And that "highway depot" they base themselves at? Ain't spoken to nobody who every worked there. It was a death camp. They built them years ago, ready for this day. Saw all about it on the Internet before the world ended. You know what they do with prisoners? Send them back to their death camp to act as slave labour! And now they are offering "protection" to any settlement or group that wants it? You say yes, and they roll in with their tanks. Set up a death squad in charge to impose their rules. Then they take all your guns away. Say its to "pool resources" and that they will be issued to designated militia units "if required". Bull shit. This was the plan all along. The man on YouTube said they would be coming for our guns. Now they are. But if you say no to their "protection"? Like those folks just south east of Ashland? Well then they label you "recevidist rebels" and launch an all out attack on you. Say you're a threat to the peace. So yeah, thats the "cavalry". Bunch of facist crooks if you ask me. Atleast with the triad you know they trying to screw you over."
