Off Topic! ----------------------- You would think a small press game company would come up with an advertising campaign along the lines of: Did your lovingly painted army just get nerfed by the home office of that other gaming company? Favorite figures forced to "retire" to make way for new, more expensive miniatures? Tired of the "Pre-turn 1 rules argument" phase? Average age of your local opponent pool too young to shave, let alone drive? Then play our game! You'll be able to field fantasy, science fiction and historical forces... in the same game, if you want! With our fully designed unit creation rules, you can stat up all of your existing figure collection from any manufacturer. Link up with other players in your area using our moderated forum and online opponent finder. Purge yourself of edition-itus, one company miniature servitude, company fanboys and price escalation. Play a game that's actually yours with the figures you already own and that anyone can join! Was that too over the top? |

I have heard that line from a few companies. Thats why there are load of free non affiliated rule sets online. Skank, Warengine (shockforce was designed to be ultra tinkerable) and many others. |

Its effectively the introduction from Skank... except, they use the concluding line "... and Here's your Wallet back!" |

It's the fun in gaming that drives me... I'm not a powergamer, I'm a gamer. If I like the sounds of something then I do it. Like painting BVD's on my Warmachine Bile Thralls. I bought it, I built it, and I painted it, so I'm going to play it... This is why I solo I can get really toxic with people messing with my fun! The Wastes makes gaming fun. I know that I don't share much but it's because of my leaky brain pan. Here there are lots of laughs and plenty of top notch painting and builds. I raise a pint in y'alls honor!! |

Actually, before I had access to the net, I only ever knew of GW and Reaper mini's, I had an idea that GZG existed but never knew anything about 'em. |

Yup, back in the day...we had book stores that carried D&D, and a hand full of miniatures. Then Comic shops started to carry Ral Partha and GW's products. The world is a bigger place now. LAF |

Yep, the original hardcovers from 1978 and Grenadier box sets just for D&D. Well, the book stores still carry D&D (4.0), dice and miniatures (plastic & painted, but still miniatures), though the FLGS has way more goodies. And what we can't get through them, there's the inter-web-thingie!

I did get kicked off several 40K forums/groups for basically telling the brn ded nur ply u/unbal gm/nurr in rewls crowd to get fucked in a rather straight forward manner. even tore apart a moderator who went by the nickname of redliner on and off list; he was shocked, shocked, i say, to discover that colonials like me would explain in half syllable words exactly what a redliner is . . . between paying a fortune for pretty toys and then not even bothering to paint them up, all the while worshipping at the cold ceramic throne of the GOD OF SWIRLING WATERS tomes of wisdom, i just blew the off years ago. DAWGIE, who did indeed enjoy 40K:RT, and even 40K v/1, SPACE HULK, NECROMUNDA, , MORDHEIM, and early WHFB . . . |

I'm getting back into Necromunda, it was and is the only "competitive" game I've ever really enjoyed. (I don't see PA stuff as competitive, more like a story telling.) |

Big table top games like WFB and 40K, Hordes and Warmachine tended (at least in my experience) to become competitive in so much as a cross of power gaming and countering what the other player has. For instance, you have a themed infantry force, the other bloke has an armoured company, so you throw your theme away and stack it to blow tanks up. Or, say you've got a big enough collection to cater for any need. So when your mate says "hey lets have a game" you go to your collection and pick the best to counter what models he has. I know it seems an odd statement to make, and I'm not sure if I've gotten my thoughts across properly without being seen as a dick. But to me competitive gaming is all about "defeating" your foe at any cost, fun comes second. Whereas Necromunda (and to a lesser extent Mordheim (choosing skills at advancement is where it fails IMO), you still want to see your forces kick massive arse but apart from selecting weapons and how many dudes you have, there's lesser room for the "he has 'X'" counter move thanks to the random skills and injuries element. My PA experiences, as they are more based like an old school D&D game, tend to be set up with what feels right for the scenario being played (and what I have in my collection ).I think it all boils down to assigning point values, I just don't see this as being all that productive to fun gaming but more for seeing how much cheese can be fitted into a list, or who knows the most effective combination's and counters to what you know your friend will be putting on the table. I know it's not real clean, but that's my take on competitive gaming.... |
