Nah, I don't see dead people, the kids were funny when we first moved in though, they'd go to the back fence (facing the asylum obviously) and chat to no one. Perhaps that's a little spooky. |

People (usually drunks) walking past say they've heard screams coming from the castle! It's a beautiful building, all big grey stones, very medieval/victorian castle looking. EDIT: http://www.jward.ararat.net.au/ Check out the photo section! Edited by Ross, Jan 18 2009, 11:40 PM.

That does have a very good 'victorian jail'look to it! I'm not sure I'd call it a castle though... Next time I'm home & the weather is good I'll hike over to the castle across the valley and so you my local one (Also victorian, ironically enough) |

See I thought they stopped making castles around Napoleon's time, as the gunnpowder and cannons came about they stopped building them? |

Yes - the military did, but certain esoteric British lords & new money decided that they wanted to live in a castle... so they built themselves ones |

Nah - I think its cool. Besides its not like Ross takes them there and locks them in! Abandoned places like that might be dangerous but then so is crossing the road. No where JAR is safe. You could be hit by lightening as you travel to work one day (dancing about in a thunder storm with a 12 foot copper rod singing "All Gods are Bastards" doesnt count). Personally speaking as someone who remembers the last of the ruins in my home town from the blitz (they where there until the late 70s, and we still dig up the odd bomb) and other old abandoned hospitals (the old victorian types), dock buildings, industrial sites and warehouses (Liverpool of my youth was a pretty grim place) - such places gave real food to my imagination as a kid. There are lots of famous Authors and artists from the UK who grew up in similar places. Edited by mattblackgod, Jan 25 2009, 12:04 PM.

You should stop watching those old black and white news reels about the Beatles! Actually the grey colour is the sky! Liverpool is mostly browns especially the river! Most of the abandoned buildings where Victorian and Edwardian brick jobbies - built to last for centuries. Many of them have new lives as shopping centres, museums and apartments these days. The city has changed a lot since I was a kid. We have shiney sky scrapers (but only just) and fancy ultra modern shopping centres too now. The city has some fabulous buildings built by the merchants - just to show London that the place was just as good. Plus its the only city in the world with two catherdals - one Catholic, one Anglican. Being a major port it has quite a history and the local history is really chequred and odd. The city help forge the land JAR loves. Its odd but I love the place. Shame some of it needs a population transplant. But then thats true of any city or town on the planet.
