Which all seem to be biased...

I've got to ask - what does the book say the war is all about? Taxes? It might be worth remembering that the colonials in the Americas were paying less taxes than citizens in Britain. The 'real' reason was the the colonies wanted to expand into treaty protected indian territory and a few people rebelled over the fact that King George wouldn't let them, and then spun things out to get more people to side with them. From what I've heard, aprox a 1/3rd of settlers wanted independance, a 1/3 wanted to be english and ~1/3 didn't care.

On the troops front - the British troops were fairly good, its just that they weren't prepared for the underhand tactics employed by the american rebels (which would now be called terrorist tactics). Motivation was also a large issue, as most troops didn't want to stir things up too badly as they were hoping to retire to the colonies due to the lower taxes and better standard of living. The Hessian mercenaries employed by the King & loyalists were possibly a bad idea - excellent troops, but pretty brutal.

I won't mention the fact that more French troop were fightiing with the rebels than actual rebel Americans by the end of the war or that Washington applied for a commission with the loyalists (which was refused on matters of incompetancy) before siding with the rebels.

As for continued agression... After the rebels won, Britain lost interest with the colony but the Americans didn't seem happy to let things rest - what with the American's attacks on british north america (Canada) in 1815, the attempted fennian invasion of the dominion of canada in 1866 (?) & the blatant american support of the Reil rebellion in canada during 1875...

On the targets front - as Danny says, any enemy ship is fair game during times of war - certainly both our countries sunk a large number of axis merchantmen during WW2. And in those days, war was a diiferent business - every nation allowed for the fact that after a seige of a city, the victorious besiegeing army was allowed the rape & pillage of said city. Its just how wars were fought then.

I'm stricly a colonial period historian, but you do pic up bits and bobs here and there... :) Now, having said about the war of independance - when was the other time you beat us?

Ahhh - I knew Xander would know more about it than me. :D

The Aliies were not the only ones attacking merchants.....lest we forget the Western Approaches (the HQ is stil here in Liverpool) and all the problems it has with U-Boat wolf packs.

No country is totally innocent in the treatment of its own peoples or others in the wars of the past. Few have always acted honourably. Now lets not hear any more of it.

Okay, here's my background......it's still basic at this point since I'll be filling in detail as I play.

There's a world war going on at a low level (doesn't really matter who's fighting who since nobody in the game remembers anyway, except for the Vaulters and they shoot on sight), lots of skirmishing rather than all out war. In an effort to gain an advantage in the growing conflict, a super soldier virus (shamelessly borrowed from fallout) is created. Initially it's a great success producing tougher, stronger, faster soldiers......but the virus doesn't stop there it continues to mutate and re-engineer it's subjects. The virus then spreads to the civilian population and the government decides to take drastic measures. Operation 'Preserve Hope' is put into operation and every uninfected person the government can find is rounded up and dispatched to the Vault system.......then, the government launches a nuclear attack on its enemy, planning on the retaliatory strike destroying it's own infected population as well as winning the war. Hurrah! :D

Basically the virus enables the survivors of the conflict to survive and even to a limited extent prosper in the harsh environment of the wastelands. Unfortunately the fallout courses the virus to mutate itself, creating multiple viruses, all of which mutate their subjects differently.

The Vaulters crack the vaults and emerge to find they have a bit of a problem.....

I'm planning to use GZG 25 mm for my Vaulters and as baseline unmodified humans, pretty everybody else is infected, however many are just larger and more powerful than ordinary humans. Many are so heavily mutated that they appear to be different species........indeed the virus has apparently also spread to some non-human species. The Vaulters are trying to re-take the world for pure humanity and the modified humans are just trying to survive.

Pretty nice. Super soilder viruses are part of the Resident Evil and Ultra Violet movies too.

Such a background allows you to use all sorts of mins. Elves/Edlar, Goblins, Orcs and so on. It also allows you to use Zombies, Vampire Mutants (simliar to Durham Rad from 2000AD's Strontium Dogs) and pretty much your mini buying whims gets to buy! The virus thing allows you to comfortably use 25mm to 32mm + on the same table. Nice thinking.

Thanks.......I think Phoenixkuz's rules should handle this quite well, my Vault factions (they'll be a few fighting over the correct way to rebuild civilisation) will be technically advanced, but pretty much screwed if it comes down to hand to hand with a guy or girl twice their size.

I really dig this setting of yours! And I sure hope Wasteland Chronicles will be able to make it work for ya. One of the main points behind WC anyway, was exactly that - that instead of presenting a cookie cutter setting, people are to be encouraged to make their own. Sure, I've got my own setting that I'll add with small details here and there, but nothing that'll ever become canon.

The compendium, once the basic game is done, is all about expanding the universe; more archetypes, campaign rules, rpg-rules the works... If only I could get a hold of the bloke who promised to do the layout for me >_<

What GZG models are you planning for the Vaulties?

EDIT: Sorry, I should have mentioned that I agree with Dan's comments about the background being both interesting and very versatile being that you can mix 25-32mm (or even bigger as long as equipment is in scale) easily!

I figure on getting several different factions using the national armies from GZG....I already have some NAC marines (which I've swapped heads with some Warzone plastic Imperial heads) to act as one of the factions. There are a couple of different ones in light power armour (New Israeli's & UNSC) I like for this since I think they should be NBC protected against the virus. I also think a few more and some from the street level range would be good as the Vaults which didn't have access to military equipment and are improvising.
