The random bits of lore/ inspiration thread

I don't think we have a thread like this yet, but this is a thread where anyone can post random factoids, tidbits,or bits of inspiration that they have read about or thought up and said to themselves "This is a cool Post apoc. idea!"

Sort of like the vehicle and terrain inspiration threads, only for ideas.

-In Africa, before the introduction of firearms, hunters of elephants would follow them until they fall asleep. Then -incredibly carefully- the warriors would cut the elephant's achilles tendon, crippling it's leg. They would rinse and repeat until the elephant was crippled and couldn't escape or fight back, and they would run a spear through it's eyes. In post apocalypse terms, I imagine this is one means an experienced mutant hunter could work solo, or maybe a rite of passage in your societies.

- During the dark ages, in the wake of a battle, peasants from the nearby lands would flock to the battlefield in search of survivors and trinkets. If the survivor was of noble birth or apparent wealth, they would be raised back to health and ransomed to the local lords. If they where commoners, their throat was cut, their body looted, and the unfortunate man was left to bleed out in the coming agonizing hours. The connection is probably obvious, since the dark ages where basically a post apocalyptic version of Rome.

- In many battles, the leading cause of death was not in the blades or bullets of enemies, but the disease and infection that spreads in such conditions. Trench foot, for example, was the result of keeping feet in wet and dank places for extended periods. It could be easily prevented by changing clothes and staying dry. In the apocalypse, such maladies would return with a vengeance. I imagine that even simple cuts and minor diseases would be enough to kill people in a world without doctors. Disease was so bad historically, that during the dark ages, infants where not given names until their first year of age so as to prevent attachment to the newborn.

-In The Sengoku Era of Japan, Samurai Warlord Oda Nobunaga once met a group of catholic missionaries. After hearing them preach the word of the bible, Nobunaga took only one lesson to heart: Being nailed to a cross is a terrible way to go. After a little practice on the missionaries, Oda Nobunaga became the first to institute crucifixion in Japan. Just a reminder that when looking through the ruins, some warlords will receive more inspiration then merely divine...

-In the village of Nokhur, Graves have mountain goat horns placed on top of them to ward off evil spirits and grant the soul safe passage into heaven. The mountain goats have been long respected for their strength and endurance, and they are sacred animals.

-A good way for modern urban explorers to die is going into underground bunkers and mine complexes. Long after the air filtration has stopped functioning, It is not uncommon for pockets of bad air to build up, in addition to collapse and flooding. So, if you need anything more then horrific mutants and rouge droids to haunt your vaults...

Basically, post little tidbits and inspirations for other people to see. It doesn't have to be from other sources, it could just be an idea you've had.

Cool stuff! I actually did not know about the cargo cults...

Found this quote. Seems rather relevant.

"Never trust a survivor,” my father used to warn me, “until you find out what he did to stay alive.”
— Kurt Vonnegut, Bluebeard
