These are the notes that I am starting with, they will be fleshed out more as necessary but they do give a good overview of the framework that we have in place. Comments and criticisms welcome. ------------------------------------------------- January 5th, 2015 Coinciding with the new year the citizens of the Earth got to enjoy three days of meteor showers. The night sky, and in some places day time as well, was colored with fiery streaks as asteroid particles showered the upper atmosphere. Most of the particles burnt up on entry though thousands of small particles made it to the ground. There was little to no resulting damage from the shower. January 7th, 2015 Patient Zero. Robert Carson of Big Timber, Montana fell dead in his yard after complaining about stomach pains. He was declared Dead on Arrival at the local hospital. During the autopsy it was found that his stomach and internal organs were overrun with tumors and that his lymph nodes were enlarged and swollen. Robert Carson’s body was transferred to the State Medical hospital. The doctors could find no cause of this rapid cancer growth and promptly alerted the CDC. January 9th, 2015 The Red Rains. Storm fronts built across the Earth. Meteorologists attributed this to the amount of asteroid dust that had built up in the atmosphere and the global opinion was not to worry. Red Rains began to fall over the next several days across every continent. The paths following typical weather and storm patterns. Where the rains fell leaves curled and died and people developed rashes. January 15th, 2015 Reports began to come in from nearly every country, humans and animals coming down sick, dying within days of wild cancerous tumors throughout their body. Autopsies reported that the illness first inactivates the body’s Tumor Suppressor Gene and then follows quickly by disabling the DNA repair gene. This is the common path of cancer but at an alarming rate. January 21st, 2015 Scientists at Center for Earth Science Studies in India locate the body that is causing this illness, it is a virus of unknown nature that invades its host system and begins work on the genes themselves. The virus was carried in the asteroids themselves and is carried in the Red Rain that followed the shower. In the outside world the death toll now stands at 1 in 50,000. Infection rates are unknown at this point but the scientific community is shaken at the implications. January 30th, 2015 The death toll is now at 1 in 25,000. Military and police forces have been mobilized in nearly every country. Internment and martial law has been put into effect to quell the panic and wholesale riots that are beginning to develop. Cities burn as panicked citizens begin fighting. In the third world any semblance of order has disappeared. The virus reigns unchecked and tens of thousands die. February 11th, 2015 Death toll is now estimated at 1 in 10,000. Scientists from the U.S., France, England and Russia have developed an anti-body that will fight the virus, but the failing infrastructure means that there is no way to manufacture the medicine on a large scale production. The remaining governments begin a program to inoculate themselves, key scientists and what remains of their militaries. Two things of note appeared in the studies of patients. 1st, everyone is a carrier of this virus. 2nd, some people are immune (it is from these people that the serums were first taken and studied). 3rd, not all patients were dying from the mutations. These patients, often horribly twisted and deformed have adjusted to the rapid cellular growth and even thrived on it. In many cases though the patients suffered madness and most were terminated leaving only a few for medical study. February 20th, 2015 Death toll is now at 1 in 1000. With almost no infrastructure left other diseases begin to run rampant; cholera, influenza, dysentery, etc. All begin their own savage culling of of the world’s population. Secret underground bunkers are updated and supplied, staffed with the needed personnel and their children. Military bases set up long term defensive positions and hunker down to wait this pandemic out. February 29th, 2015 Death toll is now at 500 in 1000. Half the world’s population is dead and more are dying. The worst culling of Earth’s animals seems to be over, those surviving being immune to the virus. Hybrid breeds seemed to be the most susceptible and suffered the worst losses. Most hospitals have ceased to exist, first running out of supplies and then being looted for so much as an aspirin. The major cities have become groups of conclaves built around shelter and food hoarding. In China, North Korea and Russia nuclear devices were detonated trying to exterminate the holding centers of the sickest patients while simultaneously trying to destroy the virus. One day later the Red Rains began again. March 15th, 2015 Death toll now estimated to be at 999 in 1000. A planet that two months ago was home to six billion people has been reduced to just shy of six hundred million people. There are no more governments, no more infrastructure and no more society. Equipment sits where it was left and the wildly scattered humans try to eke out a living in the largely empty Earth. January 1st, 2025 Society has begun to rebuild itself, towns and enclaves are forming amongst the wild gangs, mutants and petty Warlords that wander the land. The Earth itself is a wild contrast of terrain. In the wastelands, those areas hardest hit by the Red Rain, almost nothing grows and it is unfit for human life. Sickness and disease lay about those blighted lands. The rest of the world reflects the unchecked growth of nature. Trees and wild grasses about, sky scrapers covered in vines, this land is healing itself without the constant touch of humans. January 1st, 2035 The earth still hasn't changed much. Towns and villages continue to grow, electricity in areas has been restored on a limited basis. Gangs, mutants and Warlords still roam the land. The biggest thing to note on January 1st was the opening of the doors on the hidden government and military bunkers. The inhabitant’s children are now grown and trained in both military specialties and science. It is now time to discover what the world has in store for them. |

The background has been added to based on a lot of discussions with my primary gaming partner. Some of these are RP elements and most of it can be applied to table-top. As mattblackgod pointed out, the plague/sickness was designed specifically to promote the use of mutants and psionics. So here are some things that have been discussed and fleshed out. 1. Most fuel is either methanol or bio-diesel (made from rapeseed oil, canola here in the states). 2. Electricity is a distinct possibility for people, but generally not as we know it, more along the lines of the birth of electricity nature. 3. Of the troops that were ordered to hold their bases and hunker down, many were destroyed or drifted. Others have become strongholds of militia and/or warlords. 4. Biker/vehicle packs still roam the land, looting and pillaging. 5. Monkey and apes had the possibility to mutate as well, leading to odd creatures and some smart apes. I'm sure you all see where this is going.  6. Ammunition is still manufactured, some places have the tech to make gunpowder, more common is black powder though. Primers (essential for cartridge based firearms) are still manufactured in some areas and are high trade value items. 7. The 'Red Wastes' produced a much more virulent form of the plague and trees and animals have been effected as well. This leads to all kinds of crazy opportunities. |
