Abomination: The Nemesis Project was a computer game released in 1999 and billed as the spiritual successor to XCOM. Unfortunately unlike XCOM it wasn't turn based but instead real time strategy which you could pause for a while to give orders. A plague wipes out almost everyone, the survivors mostly join a cult which seems to be at least partly responsible for the plague. The cult predicts the coming of "the brood", a Lovecraftian superorganism that takes many forms. The player controls a small group of supersoldiers (and sometimes cops and soldiers you encounter). I think it's an interesting setting because you've got your ordinary armed cultists, bio-monsters and cities that are in the process of weird changes. Tentacles have emerged from the road to consume cars, buildings grow an outer shell of bone and muscle and ordinary looking homes have crazy looking growths ominously surrounded by dead cops. When Ross was asking about inspiring fallout scenery back around Christmas it made me think of classic isometric games like fallout, jagged alliance (anyone remember that classic?) and then finally this. Maybe this should go in the game section? Wish I could find the introduction movie to the game because it really sets the mood, here's a few pics. ![]() ![]()

Wow that looks cool. I don't recall this game at all! But at the beginning of the internet age it was quite easy to miss games like this.

Looks good, never heard of it. Speaking of old games, everyone knows Gorky17? Had a cool story about mutants in an abandoned Soviet army base. ![]() And Burntime, another classic with crappy ingame graphics, but moody atmosphere and nice VGA images. ![]()

Gorky offers a good mix of strategy, RPG and adventure. Burntime can be found as abandonware, but keep in mind it´s 23 years old by now, so be warned ![]() And now I remember having read the review of Abdomination back then... there were some issues with the gameplay that scarred me off if I remember correctly. Yes the controls were terrible, it should have been turn based. I did battle it right to the end though just to see what strange creatures and environments they had come up with and wasn't disappointed! |

I like the concept. It's not on Steam, maybe someone will do a Kickstart update. |

Burntime has some very problematic bugs, and is almost impossible to truely win, but has GREAT promise and ideas in it. |

I think Abomination was rated as one of the worst games of all time... I remember playing the demo myself way back in the day and I seem to remember it making me feel ill. No idea why. |
