Good selection to show off for your first pieces of work shown here... I like the Gatorboard shack! I see free material everytime we have an election, but I haven't started collecting the material yet. |

Good stuff going on there! The boat is a very good example of what can be done with odds and ends! That tree is nice. How much time did it take you to get to that point? |

Thanks for all the kudos. The trees took very little time. I used some car radio wire wrapped up in painter's tape. Then I just split and twisted the individual wires up for branches. Hot glue for bark texture. The trunk is hot glued to cardboard and then I added air dry clay to bulk it up. Total time for each tree (I made 8 or so like this one) was about 10-15 minutes. But I try and do everything in assembly line so as not to break up my work steps. I made several more from a large piece of plastic floral thing that work pretty well to break up the variety on the table. The only thing that cost me anything was the paint and the hot glue. Below is a picture of the other type of trees I did most recently. All the stuff I have done and posted so far is also here on my blog page. The outhouse I did with my son, and is so far my favorite piece of terrain. |

Here's a bit more of some stuff I completed last summer. The red truck was cheap - was an old toy that my kids managed to break and didn't want any more. The tree shows what is looks like before painting. The two pics with the tiles are an idea I had for modular sewers. Plastic sheeting and hot glue. A few small ruins. A street light. And a small random junk pile with unpainted rubble in the background. |

The sewers caught my attention, they look really good. How about a tutorial for those please? Sorry, I don't want to slight the other terrain bits you've done. The lamp post is neat, but it appears even with the weighted base that it would fall over fairly easily. |

The sewers were actually really easy. Decide first what size you want each tile to be. Mine are all based 3". 3x3, 3x6, 3x9, etc. There are two kinds of tiles. The walkway tiles with have the channel in the middle and the wider completely sludge tiles. For the walkway tiles: I took some heavy duty plastic sheeting which you could replace with thick cardboard and cut all the bases for each tile size that I wanted. I used a permanent marker to mark what each tile would be (corner, dead end t junction, straight, etc), then cut the second layer according to those plans. I use Loctite or hot glue to join the two layers, as this type of plastic melts at fairly low temps and bonds well with hot glue. For the sludge texture I took the hot glue and just kept drawing it up and down each tile to give it the desired look you want. Once you have each tile cut and assembled, use textured paint (about $4-6/can at wal-mart) to break up the monotony of the concrete. Don't worry about getting the paint on the hot glue it comes out okay in the end. After the texture paint dried I based the whole thing in a light black coat to help the acrylic go on better. I painted the walking levels first with just a flat acrylic gray (use whatever color you like of course). For the sludge, I first coated it all with with brown, then heavy dry brushed with a beige, then light dry brushed with a very light green. For the all sludge tiles: I just used the hot glue to draw out the and texture the tile. Still based light black, then brown, beige, and green. After all the paint was dry, I used puzzle glue to seal it in and give it a slight shine. Total space it takes up if you just lay them all out next to each other is almost 8 square feet. Doesn't seem like a lot but if you put it out on the table it can span a decent sized dinner table with all the straights that I have. Here are some more pics of the tiles before painting. |

Good. Nice work. I like all the small pieces to clutter the table top. Good job on the truck too... AND i see you not only cleaned the outhouse, you've rebuild it. Beautifull small model. Well done

@TooBoCu - corrugated plastic actually paints ok if you base it with black or gray first. I do all mine in a very light coat of black, then heavier primer gray, then lightly again with black to help give the paint some ''texture'' for the acrylic to stick to. |

I finished the water board. The opposite side is what I use for urban settings so it was fitting the use the other side. Textured and flat paint for the city portion. For the water - sawdust and watered down wood glue. Acrylic paint color of choice then seal it in with spray lacquer. The islands are cardboard, sawdust, hot glue, and green textured spray paint, then highlighted with green acrylic. Be careful using the spray on textured paint with hot glue - it actually melts it causing it to peel up from whatever base you are using. |

Nice selection of terrain, and by the look on the little feller's face, I'm not the only one to think that way!! My understanding, and experience is Hot glue has about a 5 year life of "adhesion." Edited by tinker, Feb 14 2014, 06:07 AM.
