would you recommend it to a beginner?

Don't get involved with Magic unless you have money to support an endless purchase of cards. The game is about building the strongest deck and to do so you buy the cards to be competitive. Key phrase... The COLLECTIBLE Card Game. He who has the most money has the BEST DECK!

Tinker's recommendation Don't play Magic, or any Collectible Card Games.

I know it's the longest lasting CCG. Do you have any friends that play CCG's? Does your local wargame store sponsor these games?
I recommend playing what your friends or gamers in your area are playing since it's hard to play a CCG by yourself.
That said I imagine Magic is the one they're playing. It's not hard to learn, but they keep adding new rules and card sets and that can get overwheliming.

Played MtG from Revised to Fallen Empires. Every new release nerfed some of the most powerful cards/combos from the previous releases: a combo of 3 cards to activate an uber-effect is replaced with one card that does the exact same thing for less effort. Then there's the seemingly random official disqualifications of previously existing cards that are suddenly declared "broken" or "too powerful". For casual play it can be fun (with the right group of people), but tournaments go to whoever can spend the most on rare cards aftermarket. We called if "flat crack".

Besides, once you base and spray primer the cards, all the detail is lost. :(|wink:

h'mm well i dont know how popular it is in the uk, but i wouldn't be interested in
competitive tourneys, but an ebay job lot of cards split between 5 mates should
be okay... and cheap!

Before you go to Evilbay I recommend checking out Craigs List. Around here it seems like someone new is putting their Magic collection up for sale every week and they tend to be pretty cheap.

I assume this is the same in every state. Search for Magic under "Toys" and also "Collectables".

cheers joe but P+P to the uk from craigs list means you have to sell an organ!
otherwise, it would seem like a good idea!

I´m a "casual" card gamer and haven´t spend my pocket money at Wizards of the Coast (thanks to GW...).

So the first time I played Magic was a few years ago. I visited some friends of mine who had rediscovered their old deck. It was much fun - because they are relaxed people! Guess it´s less fun with powergamers. Another friend of mine who also played Magic at school times was going to a tournament last year (i.e., ten years after). He took old cheap standard cards, finished 16 of 50 and is still amazed how he managed to annoy those powergamers.

If you are looking for a good non-collectible card game, maybe you should have a look at Dominion. It´s well balanced, and we are happy with the basic game for every now and then.

well i went into Sheffield to visit the (very good) war-games emporium, me and my mates all spent about 4 quid on near 100 cards each from the deck builders toolkit and the singles tray!
we all made decks and got in a couple of games, and although we weren't incredibly impressed by the so called 'innovative new rules!' we felt the game was good and we're gonna have another go in a bit!

overall for £4 i was impressed by the cheapness(?) of the start up cost and whereas
i can see how it can get expensive were all happy playing it casually!
but cheers for the advice guys!

;)

Sorry, I oversaw you post, Shady!

Drake´s flames is great, I really like his spelling style.

And, hm, I tend to have a lucky hand when it comes to buying boardgames, got it a few years ago for 20 or 24 € (new). You should wait for a special offer or a good used one because it´s up to 35 € now. That would definetly be to much for a few cards, even if you add good balancing and the nice idea.

I have been a long time MTG player and I have been to tourneys as well. From my point of view Magic is one of the greatest and most addictive games of all times and yes - it can take a lot of money to do so. The fun part is always dependent from the guys you are playing with, if somebody opens his purse too much all balance is lost. To avoid this you can do the following:

Go pauper and buy only common cards. It's cheap as hell and loads of fun (if everybody does so)

Ah, one last word...

"COUNTERSPELL!" ;)

Another play balance trick: random decks. Everyone places their deck in the middle of the table. Each deck is assigned a number, then each player, in turn, rolls a random number to see which deck they get. There is a chance that you'll get your own deck, but not likely. We did this a lot as it was a way to add a little variety to the game without investing in far too many cards. You don't have to tell folks what the deck does, though. Of course, that was back in the days when you could have 4 Forks in your deck. :(|wink:
