O.K., So we're doing this on the cheap: REALLY cheap, I mean. It's years since I scratchbuilt spacecraft, and then it wasn't on the "Epic" scale, more wargame compatible. Merchant ships 6-8 inches long for use in convoy escort scenarios for "Starhound". The sort of stuff you could knock out between one session and the next week's game. But I remember how it's done... :(|;):

Hie thee hence to thy local Poundland as I did but a little while ago; here's some stuff you might find useful, it should all glue with standard polystyrene cement:
http://www.poundland.co.uk/product-range/a-z/test-tube-shot-glasses/
I was thinking of using them for pipelines or pillars in 28mm, but that belled mouth makes them look like rocket motors.
http://www.poundland.co.uk/product-range/a-z/40-coloured-plastic-shot-glasses/
Like all translucent plastic a bit brittle, but oddly enough the base is the same diameter as the end of the bell on the previous item...
http://www.poundland.co.uk/product-range/a-z/clear-plastic-cutlery-60-pack/
http://www.poundland.co.uk/product-range/a-z/plastic-cutlery-80-pack/
The spoon bowls make great blisters (and the clear ones cockpit canopies), while the handles can be used for scoops or reinforcing girders/buttresses.

http://www.poundland.co.uk/product-range/a-z/bag-of-assorted-sequins/
There's some mechanical looking shapes in these, they could be good for decorating large blank areas where you can't be arsed scribing panel lines or applying various thicknesses of panels in relief.
Get the metallic silver/bronze/gold ones in case they don't hold paint well.

O.K., that's a fiver's worth, I wouldn't want to plunge you into penury. :zlol:
If you really want to push the boat out, have a look at these:
http://www.poundland.co.uk/product-range/a-z/stick-on-diamonds---assorted-colours/
No, not the heart-shaped ones (unless you're doing the Care Bears Interstellar Armada), the other sets; remember with "Star Trek" it's Red for Bussard Collectors, Blue for Drive Emissions...

Cheers,

M

cheers guys, it's working out quite well, i'm enjoying the change to something different!

now i need your ADVICE i'm stuck in two minds over the paint scheme? do you think the 'chipped paint work' look of the desert mustang would work on this?

Posted Image

i don't mean in desert colours just the 'chipped' look? does RUST work on a space model? doe's metal rust in space? i don't think so? i'm honestly not sure! help!

Firstly, I'm a bit lost for words as to how impressed I am by your model - It looks as good (if not better) than some used in movies in the past. :goggleson:

I don't think they'd rust - water would freeze, or turn to vapour if there was any heat around. They might collect dust if orbiting in microgravity with shielding off, but at SciFi speeds they'd need what Star Trek calls "Navigational Deflector (Shields)" - because even at high sub-light speeds hitting a grain of dust will ruin your day (not to mention the interstellar hydrogen molecules coming in as radiation if your Bussard fields aren't sucking them all up). However anything that spent much of it's life hanging around orbital facilities would probably pick up a bit of a coating of particulates over the years so it could look quite shabby. There's also the possibility of new replacement bits being cleaner and a different colour to the rest (paint would fade, possibly unevenly) or temporary patches over (battle) damage - think of the Enterprise in the 3rd Star Trek movie.
As for chipping, again you'd need low-velocity impacts, but if it had encountered something that might have abraded it, the exposed metal would be greatest in the direction it encountered the abrasive - presumably the leading edges of the ship - with streaks diminishing as they go aft.

Cheers,

M

There is also weathering from entry/exit from atmospheres. Would things rust if parked in a Oxygen filled nebula?

I second that motion towards dark and dirty. Any chance of seeing some ship interior coridoor terrain for boarding action skirmishes?
